Woodwick Mill has been renovated to provide superior self-catering accommodation in a beautiful burnside setting. The environment is quiet and serene with ducks, trout, grey wagtails and the relaxing sound of Woodwick Burn babbling over the flagstone bedrock. The accommodation is finished to an excellent and well-equipped standard. The eco-friendly building is highly insulated and warmed by an hydro-electric tubine and heat pump with solar panels providing hot water. Each apartment has a Spa Bath, separate shower, fridge, freezer, cooker, microwave and Jamie Oliver tableware. There are superb views over the surrounding countryside and neighbouring islands. All double beds are King sized. With ample parking the Mill is 20 minutes drive from each of the two main towns, Kirkwall and Stromness. The self-catering accommodation is suitable for gatherings with each group or family having a separate apartment. The mill dam has been repaired and a fish ladder added.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We stayed in Sheafy at Woodwick Mill in Orkney and found the accommodation to be quaint yet modern and remote but close enough to Kirkwall for amenities. We will definitely stay here again and would recommend it to anyone who wants good quality accommodation in a rural setting.

You’ll be hard pushed to find better self-catering accommodation on Orkney. Really well equipped kitchen, bathroom with spa bath, three bedrooms, a shower room, and plenty for of parking. It was a great place to return to after a day out exploring. The two lazy-boy reclining chairs are a great addition. If I were to add one thing it’d be a shower over the bath; with four adults staying in the accommodation we could have got ready in the morning faster with two showers.

This was our second stay at The Kiln at Woodwick Mill and we could not have been happier. Micky and Elizabeth are absolutely delightful - incredibly easy to deal with and so willing to help with any recomnendatios or questions about the Orkneys. The Kiln is immaculate with every attention to detail and function. The design layout is really wonderful and even if at some point we had had truly bad weather, we wouldn’t have been unhappy to take a day of down time and stay home! The views from the living/kitchen area are superb - water views on one side and endless green fields and hills with very entertaining sheep on the other. The walls of glass windows on both ends of the living area really bring the outside in and it’s very special. The beds and pillows are so comfortable and the bathrooms both have great showers with excellent water pressure (one bath also has a huge tub.) With very thick walls, this superbly renovated old Mill is also very, very quiet. We will definitely be returning for a third stay!

We have just had a few days in the Kiln and I have to say it was very nice, very clean and comfortable. The location is good for exploring most of the mainland and also in a quiet location, so we were not disturbed. The cottage was well equipped and had everything we needed for our stay.

Comfortable and very well equipped accommodation, in a quiet location. All the main sites easily accessed, and good range of tourist info available to research and plan days out. Have had a good week, despite the changeable weather! Only suggestion would be blackout blinds for a better sleep at this time of year!!

Just spent a wonderful week in the Kiln apartment. Amazing views in both directions to the bay and also the high moors. This place is perfectly located in a peaceful area and yet the old mill building has been wonderfully renovated to provide truly comfortable and luxurious accommodation. It has everything you need for a wonderful stay in Orkney.

What a lovely place to stay! We had a 3 bedroom self-catering unit. Everything was finished with very high standards. There is a small creek running past the building which used to be a working mill. It is nestled in open farm country close to the water. Beautiful views everywhere. Great location from which to explore Orkney. Our stay was very quiet and peaceful. Highly recommend this place to stay!

We have just returned from a week at Woodwick Mill, we can't say enough to do this place justice. It must be the most relaxed we have been at any cottage we have stopped in, the owners have done a fantastic job of renovating the old mill and have left a few old mill workings in situation. We stopped in Kvern and the views were breathtaking, everything is thought of to make your stay welcoming and we hope to return in the near future.

We have just returned from 5 nights in the Sheafy. Gorgeous accommodation clean and comfortable. Micky and Elizabeth made us very welcome. Beautiful views, so relaxing we enjoyed a gentle stroll each evening after dinner with our three boys. We had a day in Rousay and were very fortunate with the weather got fairly close to the seals. Recommend the tea room in Birsay.

We arrived on the same evening as spivvycarl, below (though a little earlier! :) ) and I must agree with him that the weather was amazingly good for October. I'd been there a fortnight earlier in sun and fierce winds and feared what I might face this week, but it was glorious. I'd been looking forward to 5 nights relaxing in and enjoying this luxurious Mill (we were in Sheafy) as outside the storm might rare and rustle, but it was not to be. A first morning stroll in warm sunshine down to Woodwick Bay enticed us to stravaig further, following the coast (and using the pavement geology) north towards Gurness Broch (and finding the remains of ANOTHER broch en route). An unintended delight. This has been a fabulous conversion of a derelict mill. Photos before and after on the walls testify to that. I thought the website's online vids made it look much more spartan than it was in reality, with heated underfloor tiles, everything a kitchen could want and fine local prints on the walls and splendid views in all directions from the various rooms. Within easy reach of the BIG numbers archeologically and just as handy for lots of little ones I wanted to explore. About 20 minutes from Kirkwall but only 5 from the handy Tingwall ferry, which we used for a day trip to Rousay. A GREAT holiday base.
