Teresa welcomes you to the HammerSmith. We cater extensively for Gluten free, vegetarian and vegan diets. We are situated in the heart of the west Mainland near to the lochs of Harray and Stenness, close to the World Heritage neolithic sites of Skara Brae, Ring of Brodgar, Standing Stones of Stenness and the Ness of Brodgar. We are on the main road from Birsay to Finstown conveniently close to both Kirkwall (10 miles) and Stromness (9 miles). With the Merkister Hotel only 2 miles and the Smithfield Arms 4 miles away you do not have to go far for a relaxing drink or a meal. Fishermen can take advantage of the hire boats available at the Merkister Hotel which is situated on the shore of Loch Harray. Car hire is highly recommended, as travel around the island can be limited by bus. Please also book cars well in advance. We also have our own website from where you can book at the best rates. The sunsets and sun rises in Orkney are amazing, we have copious amounts of wonderful wildlife, bird watching RSPB areas nearby, Puffins visit yearly, seals all around us, Orcas, otters etc.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We stayed for three nights in July. Very conveniently located, close to all the sights in the Mainland. The room was very comfortable and Theresa is a wonderful host. She cooked for us every day for breakfast (superb kipper, crumpets..), gave us very good advice in advance for restaurants (so as to allow us to book, a nightmare in covid time) and we could have nice chats with her about our excursions. She gave us extra heating the first day, as the heating oil provider was not there in time, so we felt really cozy. If you stay there, don't forget visiting the pottery (the Harray Potter, Andrew, is just on the other side of the road), you'll surely find something you'll love.

My two daughters and I recently stayed at Hammersmith for two nights and simply couldn't fault it. The scenic location of Hammersmith makes it the perfect base from which to explore Orkney and the place itself is very welcoming, warm, clean, nicely laid out and decorated. The owner, Teresa, is a great host, very knowledgeable about the area and makes a fabulous breakfast too!

Teresa really looked after us here. Even though we were visiting in Winter she still provided the best breakfast on the Island with top quality homemade jams. Bed was comfy, room was warm and shower was great. All round fantastic experience and would recommend to everyone.

Teresa make you feel totally at home, to the extent where you feel like you are in your own home! Warm, comfortable, amazing beds and you certainly will sleep well. If you lead a pretty pacey lifestyle like i do coming from London this B&B is ideal for winding down and recouping. Ideally situated for all that Orkney has to offer, you will not be disappointed! Back in 2020! Thanks again Teresa......

We had a great welcome and a beautiful twin room. This place is convenient for the major sites on Mainland. A good selection of books about Orkney and ideas about what to see. We can really recommend a stay here.

Spent two comfortable nights at the Hammersmith. Our room was very clean and well appointed. The beds were very comfortable. Our host made sure that we were made to feel welcome and she ensured that we had every thing that we needed. Our host gave us information about Orkney and suggested several places to visit. Breakfast was delicious and was served at our requested time. This is a well kept and organized Bed and Breakfast. I would recommend

A great stay indeed. Teresa really went out of her way to make us feel welcome. Only had a 2 night stay which wasn't enough. Room was comfortable and cozy. Lovely and warm. Breakfast was freshly cooked and was always ready at the time required. Teresa took time to explain local attractions and how to get around. Could not find anything wrong. Sure will recommend and will stay again.

We chose Hammersmith for its location near important Neolithic sites. Worked out extremely well. It's a lovely place, nice setting, very helpful host before and during our stay. We highly recommend it to anyone visiting Orkney.
