Stunning location overlooking the Harray Loch & views to Stromness & Hoy. Friendly & helpful staff - adhering to covid restrictions. Had our Christmas meal - excellent food, service & value for money.

We stayed at the Merkister hotel in Harray in October 2020 during the Coronavirus pandemic. We were so impressed with the measures that had been put in place to keep all guests and staff safe. These measures were so seamlessly incorporated into our stay that it didn’t impact on the enjoyment of our break at all. We traveled with our 11 month old son and our dog who were both welcome with open (sanitised!) arms. The team made sure that all their needs were met and they both loved having all that nature literally on the doorstep. The bed was the comfiest and the food was incredible (the Scallops where my personal highlight!) Thank you so much to Jackie, Lorna and the team for making our first family holiday to Orkney possible and so memorable. We can’t wait to visit again next year! A testament to the fact life can continue and enjoyment can still be had during the coronavirus outbreak when staying with responsible covid secure establishments like The Merkister.

We went here twice on a week's holiday. Food was amazing as always and not one complaint. Seafood was fresh and well cooked and the Grimbister cheese is always my personal favourite. Will always recommend their steaks and the mix of coleslaw and mayo salads are what I always associate The Merkister with.

Our 3rd visit to Orkney and wouldn’t stay anywhere else on the island. Great location for seeing the many sites or Orkney and/or fishing I’d that’s your thing. Fabulous breakfasts and dinners (lots of choice and changing menu on a regular basis). Residents bar is a nice touch with well stocked bookshelves. Comfy bed too! Hotel and restaurant very well organised in these strange Covid times. Family run business and a great friendly team. A big thank you to Jackie, Lorna, John, Kenny, Amanda and Chloe ... oh and the chef 😋. Sorry I didn’t take many pictures of the food but have included some of Orkney.

We went here for a birthday dinner for my father. First time eating here and I must say we were absolutely amazed at how lovely it was. The kids meal selection was spot on. The adults meals were cooked well and good sized. I had the steak pie and white choc mousse!! Delicious. Even through all the covid restrictions the staff were very good, friendly and went above and beyond for my fathers birthday. We have actually chosen the Merkister for our wedding in 2022 and im delighted with my choice!!
