Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Went on a shooting trip, having been to the islands before and staying in another hotel, I can't recommend Merkister enough. Friendly staff, clean rooms, delicious food and flexibility. Also quiet, would recommend to anyone

I often take my guests or recommend the Merkister Hotel as a first class place to enjoy a delicious meal. As a local tourist guide my own reputation benefits from taking guests to the Merkister Hotel for their lunch. Always delicious food and friendly, helpful staff. Thank you all.

Fantastic lunch at Merkister Hotel. Highly recommended for lunch or dinner if you are in Orkney. Be sure to book though - we tried to go for dinner one night but they were fully booked so we went for lunch instead. Thanks to Donna for great service and chat! Orkney Lamb hotpot was a highlight! The menu offers a great choice of dishes. We absolutely loved it.

We stayed for four nights and we wished we had stayed longer! The location is excellent, close to the must see archaeological sites. The hotel also has superb views, especially from the restaurant. The sunsets were magnificent. Our Loch View Super King room was spacious and very comfortable. It was great to wake up to the fabulous view. Perhaps the best thing about the hotel was the food. I particularly enjoyed the trio of Orkney seafood for main course and the langoustines starter. In addition to the main menu, specials were available each evening incorporating several dishes. The specials changed regularly and we felt spoilt for choice! A good selection of vegetables was served with the main courses. Breakfasts were great too, again offering a really good choice. I particularly liked the smoked haddock served with a deliciously creamy sauce. The staff were friendly and very efficient. We loved our stay at the Merkister and would certainly recommend a visit to this lovely hotel.

Had supper here and wasn't disappointed. The steak pie was delicious and my friend had the tusk fish dish. We both had desserts which were yummy. The dining room was cosy and had great views. The service was excellent and overall very impressed.

A really good find. Stayed for four nights with my family. Such friendly and highly competent staff. Nothing was too much trouble. If you found service like this in a hotel many times the price you would be impressed. The kitchen serves excellent ingredients simply cooked. Top notch breakfasts. Would highly recommend.

The Merkister hotel is a lovely place to stay. We stayed in suite 3 which had its own patio and entrance. If you want a bit of privacy choose the garden suites of which there are 2. The room was homely and had all we needed. The food in the restaurant is great and all the staff are helpful and friendly. Its a fab choice to stay on Orkney and is central to everything.

The hotel is situated very close to a loch which creates a perfect ambience on the mainland Orkney. The staff are very friendly and helpful and Amanda does an excellent job welcoming one and leads a very good team. The food was excellent and the specials differed every day.

Family lunch for a birthday celebration. Excellent food and first class service. The restaurant was busy with a bus party in but the staff were very efficient and polite throughout, very professional.
