Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We really enjoyed staying here on our trip to scotland. May was a great host! The room was very spacious and clean. Breakfast was great as well. May offered to pack a lunch for us since we had to leave so early to catch the ferry the next morning. She had homemade goodies in our room when we came in each day too. Just a great experience overall. Thank you so much May for making us feel so welcome and comfortable!

Despite this property being on the market for some time, our stay here was wonderful. Excellent communication from our hostess, May before we set off. Our ferry crossing was from 19:00 to 20:30 but this was no problem for May. Property is about 10 minutes from the ferry port in Stromness. We arrived just after 21:00 (we managed to take one wrong turn down a long single lane track – but that happens a lot in Scotland) and May met us in the very large car park. Great views over Orkney’s “Bay of Ireland” (my wife saw dolphins the first morning we were there). The room was on the first floor and there was a large lounge area surrounding the landing with books and comfy chairs. Our room was spacious and had everything we needed. The bathroom had a “wet room” shower that was nice and powerful. Breakfast is ordered the night before from a wide range of options. The “full Scottish” was superb and my wife loved the avocado and poached egg on toast. On our second morning, May made us a packed breakfast to take with us as our ferry back to the mainland meant we had to set off at 05:00. I hope May finds a buyer soon as it appeared she ran the place single handed – but our stay was wonderful. Price per night is in line with other guest houses / B&Bs we stayed in and was value for money. Would definitely recommend as a base to explore Orkney – but as with a lot of the north of Scotland, it’s difficult to find somewhere to eat on Orkney unless you pre-book. Kirkwall has a handful of places whilst Stromness didn’t have many at all.

The hostess May, is brilliant... nothing is too much trouble!! Home baked cookies every night and a sumptuous breakfast choice. Place is not too far from Stromness ... which is not a great toon. But also well.placed for skara brae...ring of brodgar..maes howe and a pleasant drive to Kirkwall for an evening meal.

My brother and I just completer a night stay at the Button-Ben Guest House. The stay could not have been more perfect. May, our host, was great in every way. From waiting for us to arrive at 11:30pm on out first day to delicious breakfasts, dinner reservations, excursion tips and making us some lunches for our early departure. I highly recommend this establishment.

Button-Ben is a wonderful gem in the Orkney area. Beautiful rooms and a very comfortable guest lounge. There was a stunning view of the bay from the front porch and from our bedroom. Our hostess was charming and helpful, even made us a sack lunch for the ferry on the day we left. The bad news is she is trying to sell the place, so get there quickly!

Booked for us through Nordic Adventures. Thanks goodness as we might have missed this gem on our own. What a great place to explore Orkney Island from. About 10 minutes outside of Stromness maybe 15 or 20 to Kirkwall. Button-Ben is beautiful and peaceful. Rooms are spacious and wonderfully decorated not to mention the delicious home baked sweet treat awaiting us in our room. Our host, May, was gracious and helpful. May even made a packed breakfast for us as we had to leave for the ferry early in the morning. Cannot recommend Button-Ben Enough!

The stay at the Button-Ben Guest House was amazing. We definitely recommend staying there. On colder, windy days, it was great to go back to the room to warm up and find a delicious dessert waiting for us. My wife thinks May's porridge is one of the best and the breakfast overall was a perfect way to start the day. May's a great host and made us feel at home even though we were thousands of miles away.
