Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Really easy to book a room told them when I was arriving and they were waiting to welcome me. Lovely warm room and a comfortable bed, just what you need after travelling for 13 hours! I would highly recommend staying here and I myself will return on my next visit to the island.

If Stromness wore a crown, Sylvia Brown would be its jewel and her hostel is as glittering. Her welcome is warm, as are the rooms and the homely feel to the place. Would highly recommend. Book it and you’ll be very happy.

I arrived at the prebooked hostel and entered, I was looking to see how to contact the owner in order to pay and be given the room I booked. When a man appeared and told me that my room was up and to the left and that the owner had told him this, and so reasonably I assumed this man worked at the hostel. He didn't ask me for any payment during this exchange. And so I went in the room and got settled thinking I would pay before I left in the morning. I had a pleasant evening and went to bed early. At approx 2.30AM I was awoke by a woman barging into my room switched on the lights claiming she is the owner and asked me what right I had to be there amongst other things and was completely furious. I told her the man had shown me the room I was staying. She said what man? Claiming no knowledge of this man. She demanded the 25 pounds I was paying to stay there which I gave her immediately. As you can imagine I was shocked to the core. I was extremely shaken. I was in my nightmare and it was a complete instrusion to my privacy. The first thing I did that morning was report the owner to Kirkwall Police Station who told me they intended to visit her that day to be spoken to.

We were very pleased with this hostel.  It is very close to the ferry terminal.  When Sylvia greeted us she said she was putting us in a different house from the main hostel as a group were going to stay in the main hostel and she wanted us to have a quiet place.  So we were in a very quiet house where I think only two other rooms were in use.  Our room was of the standard of a guesthouse, with two single beds and an ensuite bathroom with a bath.  We paid £55 per night for the room and use of the clean and spacious kitchen downstairs.  I thought this was an incredible bargain.   I would highly recommend this hostel to other travellers.

Stayed in the annex about 100 Mtrs along from the main hostel. We stayed at the top landing a bit of a climb, but excellent sleep, clean bed clean room and the cleanest shower I've used in a hostel. Just a steep climb to get there. Would highly recommend.

We had a very pleasant stay at Harbourlee, which is an annex of the main Browns Hostel just down Victoria Street down a little side alley. Quiet yet convenient location near the ferry port, bus station, bank/corner shop/restaurants etc. Our room was spacious with three windows out onto the street for plenty of light, huge comfortable king size bed plus large single which could have accomodated a couple of children but we used it to lay our suitcases out. Both the room and ensuite bath were spotlessly clean, shower good, plenty of hot water, big fluffy towels supplied. Downstairs there was a large eat in kitchen with plenty of dishes, cutlery and cooking utensils, kettles, toasters, microwaves, cooker/oven, big fridge, freezer etc and a massive round table plus smaller table so lots of room if more than one party wanted to use it. We had a few friendly interactions with other guests but one evening we pretty much had the kitchen to ourselves and sat there for a couple of hours before, during and after eating, as if it was our own kitchen, so comfortable. There is also a washer and dryer and Mrs Brown supplies laundry soap which was incredibly welcome at that point in our holiday. Sylvia Brown is a lovely lady and was so accommodating to us when we were forced to change our visit dates, and was also happy to let us keep our cases there after we'd checked out, as our ferry did not go till later that night. Spoke to other guests who have been coming for years because the experience is so happy here. Would definitely stay here if coming to Stromness again.

Just stayed for two nights and was very pleased. Some reviewers comment on not clean I disagree. Communal areas spotless with a new kitchen lounge area very good. Shower is a little tired and could be revamped to bring it to the kitchen standards. A few steps might make access difficult for impaired as my solo room was up a flight. Host very helpful, please note cash only no cards

Booked 2 nights initially. Arrived on a dark rainy night at the end of October and had a little difficulty finding the main hostel. Nobody there but a note with my name on it was pinned to the notice board with Sylvia’s phone number. Rang her and her husband came and showed me to the “cottage” further down the main street. This consisted of two rooms, kitchen and bathroom. The next morning I found sun streaming in through the kitchen window and discovered the view was right out over the harbour, with waves lapping against the wall of the house when the tide was in. The room was comfortable, the kitchen spacious and well-equipped, and the bathroom clean with a washing machine and tumble drier. Turned out no-one else had booked so I stayed on 4 more nights and had the place completely to myself for £30 a night. Sylvia was very friendly and helpful and I’d recommend this to anyone looking for a comfortable base for exploring Orkney. Hired a bike just up the road and cycled to Maeshowe and the Ring of Brodgar one day, and to Skara Brae and Yesnaby on another. Fantastic!
