Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We had a wonderful day with Joy and Robbie at Burnside Farm. We arrived on the evening ferry, and their home is a short drive from the ferry. They were up and ready to greet us welcoming us to their home. Joy makes a terrific breakfast in the morning, and we were treated to beautiful views out the windows as we ate breakfast. Our room was comfortable, and the bathroom was excellent. We are so glad that we found them and were able to stay with them.

We had a very enjoyable stay with Joy and Robbie at their warm and friendly B&B. Everything was excellent, our room with a view was lovely, with superb en-suite facilities. Joy’s breakfasts were delicious lots of choices, freshly made bere bannock bread on the table accompanied by locally made butter and cheese. We felt very relaxed chatting with Joy and Robbie who were very informative about places to visit on Orkney. Can’t recommend highly enough we would love to return in the future. P.S. Must mention Joy’s yummy homemade shortbread biscuits

My friends and I recently stayed at this lovely B&B in Stromness. Our hosts, Joy, Ritchie (and Liz) were so welcoming and the accommodation was first class, beautiful bedrooms, with wonderful views. The choice at breakfast was varied and plentiful (and cooked to perfection). I had a fabulous time and would thoroughly recommend Burnside Farm for a relaxing stay in Orkney.

Burnside is a beautiful, cosy, spotlessly clean home where Joy, Robbie (and Liz!) make you feel so welcome. The rooms are tastefully decorated with vintage linens on the comfortable, large bed. Homemade shortbread in the cookie jars in the room makes a tasty nibble when you return at the end of the day. Modern showers deliver powerful, hot showers with complimentary toiletries to enjoy. Breakfasts are generous including Joy’s homemade bere bannocks and Orkney cheese ( do try it ..once!). Joy’s local knowledge helps enormously when planning your days out. Parking plentiful and excellent wifi. All in all, a wonderful stay, really hope we’ll get back

Really fab location with stunning views across to Hoy- a great base to explore Orkney. The room was clean, quiet, spacious and had some really lovely extras - the homemade shortbread was delicious! The bathroom felt and looked completely new, the shower was great. The breakfast was lush, easily the best porridge I've had. The breakfast spread was super, Joy and her team take a real pride in what they serve, and it really showed. Joy is an absolute fountain of knowledge, and was more than happy to offer advice as well as provide books/maps to help us throughout our stay. All in all it was a perfect base and I honestly can't wait to book in again- a great welcome to Orkney!

Very good location a bit outside of Stromness, perfect for exploring Orkney. Wonderful view from the room "Hoy view". Excellent breakfast with berries and full Scotish breakfast. Very nice and friendly people who can give many suggestions of interesting places and recommendation for restaurants.

The property is a short walk from Stromness. Warm, friendly and helpful owner. Excellent breakfast; the best porridge of our 14-day trip. We had the room with a separate bathroom; beautifully appointed, with plenty of hot water.

I'll come clean - we've reviewed Burnside Farm twice before, although in fact we've now stayed here 6 or 7 times, usually in late January (VERY off-season). It's just that we feel completely relaxed and wonderfully looked-after here. Joy and Robbie are lovely, friendly, perfect hosts, and Joy's food is always delicious, be it her signature marmalade, the cheese, the constant supply of shortbread biscuits in the room, or the gorgeous breakfasts with eggs from their own chickens. The rooms have the most wonderful view over Stromness, which is only 10 minutes' walk away, while Kirkwall is only around 20 minutes down the road in the other direction. I really don't know how else to praise this place any further without embarrassing ourselves and Joy and Robbie, but you have to believe us - it's complete perfection. We shall return!
