Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I had originally booked an AirBnB for our stay on Orkney Island, but after feeling like I was getting impersonal treatment from the host, I looked around. The reviews of Brinkies were so good, I switched accommodations and am so glad I did! Yvonne, the in-keeper, is lovely and, as a native Orcadian, she knows everyone and everything you might need to know while on the Island. Her home is clean and welcoming, the setting is unsurpassed and after three weeks of BandB breakfasts in Scotland, I can say that Yvonne's was not just delicious, but thoughtful, with a nod to the local foods of Orkney. Book this place if you can, we miss it already!

It's hard to add to what others have said already about comfort, cleanliness, food, location - and the kindness and hospitality of Yvonne herself. Looks like my stay is more recent though, and yes, Brinkies Guest House is still superb. I was staying on my own for nearly 2 weeks, first time in Orkney, and decided not to camp as I usually do. I hoped staying with someone would help me understand the place and people. It certainly did - Yvonne seems to know everything and everybody, and was great company. Like most of the people I met at Brinkes, I am keen on wildlife and "rewilding", and a highlight for me was the huge variety of plants, insects and birds around the house. Yvonne has been managing her land for nature, and I spent a wonderful morning with her and members of the Field Club auditing the pond she'd scraped in the boggy part of her field. it was a sunny morning, and the damsel flies and dragon flies were emerging as we watched. The big reason for my trip was to see the Neolithic sites. The most famous were easily reached from Brinkies by bus or bike (hired from Orkney Cycles in Stromness). But everywhere I walked from Brinkes there are standing stones, tombs, circles... a paradise for anyone interested in ancient history or archaeology. I very much hope to be back!

We spent a week at Brinkies Guest House and loved every minute of it. Located high on Brinkies Brae above Stromness, there’s a magnificent view of Hoy Island that subtly changes before your eyes. Brinkies Guesthouse has peace and quiet despite being only 600mtrs from town. Our room was beautifully appointed, freshly renovated with plentiful fresh linen and a wonderful view. Host Yvonne is a local of 30 years and we felt instantly at home. She knows all the places you should visit - including the many wonderful places in this fantastic archepeligo that are less visited. For the breakfast part of the B&B we enjoyed locally made specialties - Orkney cheeses, smoked ham etc served each morning accompanied by Yvonne’s freshly baked “bere bannock” a delicious traditional bread made with local Orkney flour. I was very sad to leave this fascinating place and would return to the Orkneys - and to Brinkies Guest house tomorrow if I could.

Our family including two young boys stayed with Yvonne at Brinkies. Nothing was too much trouble, the house was very comfortable, clean and tidy and in a lovely spot above Stromness but an easy walk in. The boys loved feeding the goats, the breakfasts were generous and delicious and we all greatly enjoyed Yvonne’s kind company. A real find and we would highly recommend a stay at Brinkley’s.

We spent four nights in Brinkies Guesthouse during our holiday in Orkney. The accommodation and the hospitality was excellent and good value for money. Yvonne, the owner, is a great host and made us feel very welcome. This is a great location for visiting Skara Brae, Maeshowe and other sights on West Mainland. Veronica and Ian

Deserves a 10 star review! Yvonne, the owner was friendly, super helpful, and most accommodating to my needs. In addition she even offerred to drive my elderly father and I to the town so we could have a few drinks. Nothing is a problem! This guest house is way better than any hotel. Unfortunately we only had the opportunity to stay 1 night at Brinkies due to our tight travel schedule but will definitely be returning. Great location (Stromness village a few mins walk, short drive to Maes Howe, Stenness standing stones, Ring of Brodgar and Scara Brae) also fab views of Stromness and Hoy from house. The rooms were spotless and most comfortable- almost like home! Yvonne goes the extra mile without even realising it. Loads of travel brochures and books available, catering for everybodys interests. I cannot highly recommend Brinkies enough. If you don't stay there it's your loss! Thanks again Yvonne for looking your help and hospitality.

Thanks to Yvonne for getting us through goats, wet weather and some late breakfasts during our stay. She has two pygmy goats who would rather be elsewhere and lots of people were involved with the chase and capture! We had a whale of a time, ate well, slept well, and were very well looked after.

What a week!! It was as much an adventure for me as it was you! Thank you for the help with my two pygmy kids......it was much appreciated! Turned out, they were just missing their mammy! Now I have become their 'mum' things have changed dramatically. I take them walks along the road on their lead; they tell me when its going to rain so that i can take my washing in, they are working out cheaper than a lawn more and i have got them to do their first trick - they will go up on their hind legs to recieve their special treat (ginger snaps). When i first got them to do this i was amazed at how long they could stand for!! They know their names, but like all girls have selective hearing; and understand some comands like 'run, run and slow doon' . When i go to the zip slide claes line i take them a little walk with me.....this has become a regular occurance and they make a right racket when i dont take them. I have them on a supervised tether and this makes life easier for me and them. They ask to go to bed and ask to go out. Such a difference in 2 months. Sorry the goats have taken over your review reply!! Thank you for your kind words. You were both great guests and I learned so much from you and very much enjoyed our conversations about wild flowers and nature. Please do come back, but bring better weather next time! You can walk the goats and speak to them as you walk!! Thank you.

Brinkies has a wonderful view over Scapa Flow and the island of Hoy. Not too far out of the main town to be a problem as its both convenient by car and short walk over the brae. Outstanding views when walking it had to be said. Yvonne, the owner and host, made the 5 day stay an absolute pleasure. Breakfast was made to order - everything from the Orkney Platter including beremeal bannocks (made to Yvonne's recipe), to homemade porridge, fry up (one for the hungry!), scrambled eggs, poached eggs, omelette. We had some variable start times in the morning but each day Yvonne was there, on the ball and on the go. I cannot rate Brinkies high enough but the combination of the house, the views, the accommodation and Yvonne as host make it something quite unique. Rooms were great .. everything you need and well looked after. Each room is different so everything from double room to the 'presidential suite with sauna' !! If you're in the area and need to get away from it all but be convenient for walking / etc. best get on the waiting list. Just stunning....

You will not find a host as accommodating, pleasant and helpful as Yvonne, the proprietor of this BB. She went out of her way to make sure that we had an unforgettable time in Stromness. Breakfast was truly unique in that Yvonne went out of her way to find delicious locally sourced foods so that we had a taste of the Orkney’s. We met as strangers and we left in just two days as friends!
