Generally an enjoyable stay. Great breakfast and okay room.
I had a single room. Very small room in the attic which was fine for me as I quite like “quirky” but the bathroom is a bit too small to be honest. Think a ferry berth bathroom. Also, I didn’t spend much time in my room so I was less bothered.
Very thin walls so I could hear neighbours and their arguing into the night.
Pre-arrival communication is poor. I had emailed twice before arriving asking if I could store my bags there (ferry arrived in the morning) and had no reply. On arrival I walked up to the hotel (only a few minutes walk from the ferry terminal) to ask if I could leave luggage. Nobody on reception. Rang bell nobody came. Rang hotel (and could hear phone ringing!!!) and nobody answered. Waited maybe 10-15 minutes and kept trying the various options but nobody responded. Walked away with all my bags and came back 15 minutes later after getting a coffee. Went through same routine and ended up giving up. Luckily a local told me that there was left luggage facility in the ferry terminal and I left my bags there for £5.

Firstly, the hotel is exactly what I was expecting. It was clean, comfortable and the staff we did meet were friendly and efficient. I was there for four nights and found the room to be perfectly acceptable.
Breakfast itself is great - but there is a 1hr 15 minute window for you to order it, which I thought was a little mean. The young lady who dealt with the breakfast was lovely though so made sure she got a tip.
There were some older people staying in the hotel when we were there and there was unfortunately nobody there to help them with their bags, so their fellow guests did it. I think the hotel should probably reflect on that. As other guests have mentioned, the hotel is loud at night, both from patrons leaving the bar downstairs and the constant noise of the ferry.
All said I don't think its worth what I paid for it, but all hotels were busy and it's a sellers market. Given the trauma of the past 18 months for the hotel industry though I'm not objecting too much either.
Didn't eat dinner here but it did in the Ferry Inn twice and that was great.

Stayed here for a couple of nights. Nice stay. Our rooms on the top floor were not big but perfectly OK for our needs. Very nice breakfast too in the rather elegant breakfast room. The hotel is connected to a pub with two bars one at the front (which was quite busy) and a much quieter and nicer lounge bar at the back. Noise from the pub was not a problem. Some car parking outside but we left the car overnight in the well lit pay and display car park at the ferry terminal, a few minutes walk away. Stromness has a nice main street and the hotel is on it. We thought Kirkwall was nice too and if visiting the Orkneys again we would probably stay there.

Used the accommodation for our crew working with SSE on the main cable to Orkney and the people at this hotel has been absolutely brilliant with assisting during the COVID-19 Pandemic crises.
Would definitely recommend to anyone and will definitely book the crews in here again.
A big thank you from 23 Degrees Renewables Ltd.

The hotel room was a great size with modern bathroom and comfortable bed. The Room was over the hotel bar and there was some noise from the music but it was switched off at 11pm and the guests were respectfully quiet. The breakfasts were superb and freshly cooked. The Haggis was an unexpected bonus. Would definitely recommend the Royal for a short stay.

This little hotel had big in-room comforts, a private bar area on main floor, wonderful included breakfast, and friendly staff. No elevator, but they did help with luggage. Only downside was limited parking. A problem in the whole city, not just the hotel. They did help with that as well. Evening meals were available in their sister hotel, the Ferry Inn, just a few blocks away. Reservations a must!

Well located, a short walk from the ferry and close to several coffee shops and the Ferry inn. Comfortable bed, clean room. Nice size, walk-in shower for the UK. Not crazy about the two flights of stairs to the room, could be a problem if you're not easily able to walk. Fantastic breakfast and no understanding of small portions! Fresh scones and croissants as well as a choice of cold cereals, porridge or a full cooked breakfast. Loved it.

We had room 16. Great views of Loch and Lewis Castle. Room was huge and had a great shower. Dinner was great in HS-1. Alacart is served in the main restaurant but we arrived too late to get an early booking. So book restaurant prior to arriving. Only 3 minutes away from the ferry it was extremely convenient. Highly recommended.

A lovely pub/hotel conveniently located in the main street of Stromness. Delicious breakfast. Pleasantly furnished room with a comfortable bed. Friendly and helpful staff. The only problem was the noise. We were on the first floor at the front just above the bar which was very noisy during opening hours, and even after it closed for the night, customers would stand in the street under our window shouting to each other, and on one occasion banging on the pub door! Probably the rooms higher up or at the back would be quieter, or it would be OK if you don't mind going to bed late. Other than that, it was a great base for a wonderful holiday.
