Stayed here last minute last week when the ferry was cancelled due to the storms, staff were superb, room was great and the evening meal and breakfast were both excellent. Thankyou also for letting me use the dining room during the day to work whilst waiting on the ferry.

From what I'm led to believe, the Stromness Hotel has long been the beating heart of Strimness. Situated literally in the very heart of the town centre it has always had two bustling bars attended regularly by both tourists and locals alike The Flattie bar (downstairs, purely a bar with pool table and well thumbed jukebox) was for decades a cheery little bolthole packed with welcoming patrons and the upstairs restaurant was similar but also, of course, served amazing local produce as well as a world class selection of local beers and single malt whiskies Sadly the new owner believes they know what is best for you personally and apparently whisky and other alcohol is very bad for you so.... you're not allowed it!! Patronising.... pious..... self righteous.... arrogant are some of the words that spring to mind when faced with this "I know what's best for you" type of management But the words stupidity and commercial suicide also come to mind when you consider many regular tourists return to Orkney again and again for its world famous cuisine, award winning local beers and world betting single malts I wonder.... does the owner want to make money or not? The two bars should be full of happy people doing what THEY choose to do and have chosentodo for about a century and a half.... and if that means making the informed, adult decision to drink beers wines and spirits then as a publican that should be what you give them. Your own personal views should not come into it. This establishment should have had new life breathed into it following the last change of ownership. But sadly it has been moulded into something it is not. Something sad, something lifeless. Where once fiddles were played and accordions squeezed as rosy cheeked punters sang and danced by the open fire with the Flattie boat hanging ominously from the ceiling we now have an empty soulless room that not only offers ZERO to the local community but is obviously making its owners zero money. Hopefully the owners will one day wake up and see how their patronising attitude is insulting the people of Stromness and decide they've done enough damage and .... well.... move on.

If, like me, you enjoy a Hotel/b&b with a bit of atmosphere and character you will love this place. Perfectly located by the Stromness ferry port, it is chock full of gently faded (Victorian?) glory. The decor and old woodwork put a smile on my face and you can't help but imagine the people who've come before you, the adventures they may have had on Orkney and the fun they would have had here. Friendly, welcoming staff, my room was clean and perfectly functional. Nice hot shower and most importantly a very comfy bed, not too soft like so many. Did I mention it was extremely good value?

We are thrilled to hear that you appreciated the atmospheric and character-filled ambiance of our historic property. It warms our hearts to know that the faded glory, decor, and old woodwork added to your enjoyment, invoking thoughts of the history and adventures that have taken place within these walls. Your kind words about the value of your stay are greatly appreciated. We strive to offer a memorable experience at a reasonable price, and we're glad we succeeded in providing you with great value. Firstly I would like to say that the gentleman on reception was very nice and helpful. I really appreciate the effort they went to for Halloween. Ripped carpets and a bouquet of mould, manky light switches and a dripping fire hose showed real attention to detail, The hotel was somewhere between Faulty Towers and the residence of the Adams Family. lit and last renovated when Roy Castle was still playing the trumpet. The hotel is warm out and in need of much love. The T total bar is probably the most foolish decision the new owners have made as half a bottle of whiskey would have made it more tolerable. Sadly there was no food after breakfast but this is understandable out of season. If you’re into the haunted house vibe it’s right up your street.

Bedroom stale smell. No food or bars open. Lack of staffing. Decor old and very tired. It looks like the owners are winding the hotel to be shut. The locals want the council to buy it to bring it up to standard for tourism. I was there 10 years ago it was class, great food and bars. Ideal location for dive trips. It is supposed to be "THE STROMNESS HOTEL" !!! No its not.

I stayed at this grand old hotel for a week. It did the job, and did it well. The hotel was clean, quiet and really lovely staff. The bed was probably one of the best I've slept in for a long time and, best of all, the enormous bathroom had a lovely bath, a rare find these days. I'll be back.

I have been to this hotel on several occasions - when it was run by another owner and with the present one. Last year I was here with some 30 scandinavians for three nights and wrote afterwards the most negative review I have ever done. I came back this year and am more than delighted to be able to write another, but this time with the utmost praise! The atmosphere is wonderful from the moment you enter, all details are renovated and inviting. The staff can't do enough for you, the food (only for groups at the moment) couldn't be better. Having been in Scotland on different tour for a month, the breakfast and dinner here has been by far the best. The rooms are spacious and clean - with very elegant linen and fluffy towels. The area is suffering from lack of staff so daily cleaning can only be done by request. My group was full of praise, they knew this is an alcohol free hotel, but with the friendliness and excellent standard it didn't matter much. On our Shetland and Orkney tour, this hotel has been the best. I will give it a full score when and if they ever get a license.

We entered through the shabby entrance and found the Reception, which was located on the first floor, down a gloomy corridor. By then, we had been informed by signage that alcohol was prohibited (this wasn’t mentioned in the booking details); “due to unforeseen circumstances” there was no restaurant for lunch / dinner; CCTV was in operation and any problems should be reported to an off-site phone number for the Payman Club. When I mentioned to the receptionist that it was hard to see what I was getting for my money, all I got was a puffing of cheeks and a shrug. The room was clean and tidy but the walls were painted a drab olive colour all round, with not even a picture to relieve the monotony; the furniture was a curious mix of darker wood and painted grey; the view was of the overgrown garden; the bathroom was small with no storage space and only a double hook to hang things on. The bed was comfortable but the shower was pathetic. Breakfast was a pleasant surprise – good selection, well prepared and presented. The cook seemed to be doing all the work - even to the extent of helping guests with their transport enquiries - all this with a cheerful smile, friendly service and a genuine desire to please the guests. She was an absolute star in the general murk. On leaving, the receptionist asked how our stay had been and my wife said it hadn’t met our expectations – but again this did not lead to any follow-up conversation. It was apparent that none of the staff felt empowered or any inclination to do anything for us (presumably because the Payman Club handle all the nastiness). I need to say that, for our three-night stay, we had paid the sort of price that would get you a weekend in a 4* hotel in central London, complete with swimming pool, and had thought this would be a special treat to end our visit to Orkney – but all we got was an average bed & breakfast. What really grates, apart from the fact they have taken a lot of my money under false pretences, is that they have deprived the town of Stromness of a community hub that it couldn’t afford to lose. The no-alcohol policy is put forward as a moral choice out of concern for the well-being of others – but they obviously don’t mind ripping off their customers or depriving a whole community of a valuable asset. Since our return, I have written to the Payman Club and to the CEO directly to request a partial refund – I have received a reply from the Payman Club with lots of weasel words – but they carefully sidestepped the issue of a refund. The Payman Club operate a number of properties around the UK, so please do your own research (there’s plenty to read on the internet) before booking anything associated with them; there are also various Payman Holdings companies with the same CEO.

We truly appreciate your input and want to sincerely apologise for the inconveniences and disappointments you experienced during your time with us. It's disheartening to hear that your expectations were not met and that certain aspects of your stay fell short. We're glad that you found some positives, like the breakfast and the efforts of the cook. However, we understand your concerns about the overall atmosphere, room decor, and amenities provided. Your comments about the lack of empowerment among the staff and the community impact of the hotel's policies are well noted.
