Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Visit for food all you can say first class.
Good quality, good service well priced, would highly recommend.
They were happy to reduce adult meals to a child portion for our son.
Remember to leave room for the homemade cake which is bliss

We came here in August 2017 for an overnight stay at the bed and breakfast with our puppy. We had such a wonderful time and would have highly recommend this place. We came back this year with our motor home and cycled 20 minutes with the dogs in trailers to get something to eat and a beer at the Belsair only to be welcomed that they have never allowed dogs in at all since the new owner took over 7 years ago. We had been there five years previously and it was acceptable then. We had to sit outside in the wind with our beer with the dogs. Needless to say we didn’t order any food had two beers and left. I can only say I’m sadly disappointed as I was really looking forward to taking a trip down memory lane. Maybe I should have checked their new dog friendly policy.
I would have given this place 4 stars as it previously was dog and people friendly.
If you want to take a dog check with the owner as this may have a different outcome

Stopped just one night as I was passing through. Rooms a little old . And a bit dusty but comfy bed..
I went for a meal but service was slow and very average to be fair.. probably give this one a miss in future. Lovely island though. Will definitely return there

Hi John.
Thank's for the hours we spent chatting in September.
You are my fondest memory from my visit to Orkney.
And I really appreciated the loan of your car!
The view across Otterswick was fantastic. Thank's for the tip.
And I really enjpyed the Pie.

I hope all is well with you and Mrs. sinclair.

"Long may yer lum reek"
Best wishes.
- Finn

This is under New Management. Kay was so friendly and welcoming. When we arrived we were shown to our rooms which were comfortable and very clean. The food was delicious, we had the local fish. Nothing was too much trouble. The breakfast was hot and well presented. We will definately be returning. If you want to experience real Orkney hospitality, stay at The Belsair.

Visiting the island whilst touring the Orkneys, we came across the Belsair and decided to eat there. From the exterior, there has obviously been a recent programme of refurbishment, and it looked very nice. This work has obviously been continued into the bar area. Sadly though, the effort put into this has obviously detracted from any customer service training. Lacklustre service, and a poor meal. Whilst edible, it was nothing to get excited about, and I suspect the cook has little training. There is a fairly extensive menu, and on an island with poor transport links I would suspect that little is freshly prepared, but microwaved to order. There are other options on this beautiful island, and on our return there we will not be repeating the Belsair experience.

We decided to go into the Belsair for a drink, when we were out on a day trip. When we arrived there was one man in the bar, with a pint, we stood for at least 10 minutes & no one came through to serve us, looked for a bell or something to get staffs attention but couldn't see one! We walked out & went to the other hotel were we got served straight away.

There are not many options on Sanday. Room was comfy, a bit dusty - looked like it had only had a lick and a promise. Bed comfy. Shower fair flow but small cubicle. Felt like we were inconveniancing the owner by being there, didn't feel welcome at all. Premises very dated but you can forgive that if you get a friendly service and good food. The breakfast was poor. Burnt slice of toast with a overcooked egg (glad we had eaten at the hotel next door the night before if this is what the cooking was like). My friend said it looked like a seagull had bombed on my plate!
