Peacefully set in its own grounds with lovely views over the colourful village square, this chateau style hotel’s traditional features have been carefully retained to strike just the right Highland note. A warm welcoming feeling comes as much from the friendly staff as from the fine wood panelled public rooms which have been carefully preserved. Strathpeffer itself is just steps away from the hotel and is renowned as an attractive Highland spa resort with fabulous Victorian architecture. Be sure to enjoy the scenic views of the village below. The massive peak of Ben Wyvis is the backdrop to this charming village. It’s a perfect base from which to explore Scotland’s dramatic Northern Highlands – mountainous countryside, sparkling streams, waterfalls and golden shores.

Lovely hotel with lovely staff. However, as a fulltime wheelchair user I was shocked to discover there are NO fully accessible rooms, so I spent my week having to have strip washes daily, but, apart from that I did enjoy my break.

The Bay Highland is old and dated, and looks tired in many areas, although some rooms have been updated and are lovely, others are terrible.
I can't understand why National charge single travellers a supplement when single rooms are available although no bigger than a walk-in cupboard and very tired looking.

The dining room experience was ok and I couldnt fault the choice or waiting staff at dinner. Breakfast was buffet style with plenty of choice including porridge, fruit, cereal and full English etc. with as much tea & coffee as you want.

Overall although I enjoyed my stays, I'd describe the hotel as tired and requiring major work to update it inside and out.

Stayed here last week as part of a National Holidays group, the hotel was full with 4 coach loads and the staff were a little overwhelmed at times. This is a long journey and ours from the North West was 12 hours including pick ups. The hotel is remote there is very little in Strathpeffer itself but you can get buses to Dingwall nearest town and Inverness and Ullapool. The hotel is a beautiful old building with large rooms and high ceilings. The rooms were nice and warm. My first single was excellent but due to noise problems I had to change rooms, my second albeit a twin was above the kitchen and there was a constant buzzing noise whilst the kitchen was in operation, not helped by the window not shutting completely ( room12). However apart from that it was clean and comfortable. The bathroom suites are old and some lovely colours. Not all rooms have showers so if you need one you must request when booking. The food was hit and miss for me, almost as if there two different chefs but satisfactory and more than enough to eat. All in all for the price paid and the addition of an included drinks package it was a good value break in a beautiful area. Its the long journey that would be the deal breaker for some.

The Highland Hotel is a beautiful old Scottish Hotel. Friendly staff, rooms are tidy but could be cleaner. We had 3 large lumps of ancient dust on the carpet under the radiator. When we checked in and were given the key, the reception staff obviously didn’t realise our room was still being cleaned, so we had to hang around in the corridor for a while. Staff were very quick in delivering us an iron and board when requested. Dinner, although we made a reservation, turned out to be a set menu. Prices for just ordering a main had too be requested, my main of risotto had to be returned as it was just a bowl of unseasoned starch. I had a starter of pakoras instead and dessert of fruit crumble which were tasty enough. There was a jug of water on the table but no drinks or wine menu and if you wanted a drink you had to go and order it yourself at the bar which was in another room. The only other food on offer was pizza in the bar. This is probably a good set up for the coach parties that were in, but not for us. The room was cosy and the bathroom was a tight fit to be able to sit on the toilet without damaging yourself squeezing between the toilet roll holder and the shower. I am sure I read a great menu online before booking this place as I have dietary requirements and have to be careful, so I was disappointed with the very small choices, obviously what I read was well out of date. Breakfast was ok, usual buffet with the toaster that never toasts enough or burns the bread black. Very efficient staff who were running their socks off as the hotel was busy. Check out was at 11am but the cleaner barged in at 10 without even a knock on the door. This hotel is in the beautiful village of Strathpeffer which has a few amenities and tourist stuff to do. Unless we were here for a wedding or event we probably would not stay here again.

Having previously visited the Highland hotel I was aware of some of it's shortcomings such as rather tired rooms and the poor state of repair of it's exterior; however it had a certain charm that enticed us back. Unfortunately I will not be returning again the hotel is clearly not ready to accept large parties of guests (there were four coach parties in during our visit) being massively understaffed. Our first breakfast experience was like a 'rugby scrum', there was no organisation everybody serving themselves to food using the same utensils (in the height of covid), I would have expected our breakfasts to have brought to us from a safety point of view! We were told breakfast was served at 7.30am so were ready at that time, at 7.50 the dining room opened. Previously our waitress introduced herself and told us she would be looking after us for the duration of the stay and our table would be, however there was none of this and we sat at four different tables; the biggest issue for us was that on our second evening we had to wait 45 minutes for our pudding and I only got this after speaking to waitress for a second time other guests nearby did not even get there main courses and gave up, One main course was for lamb which came in little pieces with assorted veg but without any potatoes or chips. Room service will not enter your room so you have to leave your dirty towels on the floor outside which they replace left outside on the dirty corridor floor. Desperate for some serious investment, yes it was fairly cheap, and we have Covid but surely things could be done better! Will not be returning.

Our room had not been sanitised and it was freezing cold the heating was not on anywhere in the hotel we complained about it and after 2 days they brought us an electric heater which warmed it up a little bit the food was ok not brill but ok we had no entertainment at all I will never book a holiday with Shearings again we enjoyed the beautiful scenery in the Highlands but with Shearings now you have to change coaches 3 times and a lot of hanging around Never Again.

Quite an experience! Strathpeffer is a quaint village with a fair amount of interesting places and history. The hotel looks quality but first impressions can be deceiving. We were allocated room 223 which is on the 2nd floor at the extremity of a very long corridor next to a fire escape. It has a large water damaged area on an internal wall and ceiling. We decided to eat in the bar with our dog beside us. The menu was limited and unpriced. My wife ordered cod on a bed of Malaysian rice. It came with over cooked deep fried potatoes! To be fair the staff were apologetic and we were not charged for the dish and compensated with free desserts and drinks. We discovered that my breast of chicken with the same unappealing side of fried potatoes was £20! We considered this well over priced and resolved to eat elsewhere in future. We felt decidedly uneasy in the hotel, with its preponderance of dark stained wood and garish tartan carpets etc. With the place very sparsely filled it felt like something like The Shining! Splintered wood lay outside a nearby room the whole 3 days of our stay. We asked for more tea bags and milk pods. Instead of giving them to us a man brought them to our room at 2330 hours when we were in bed! Bizarre! The receptionist didn’t know how to work her computer and card machine and wrongly calculated our bill. On the positive side the restaurant and bar staff were very nice - at least one redeeming factor.

First impressions when you arrive at Strathpeffer and look up at this hotel is what a grand place this is. When you do get outside close up its quite annoying that this place is rather neglected and a spruce up with a paint brush wouldn't go amiss. On entering it has a rather scottish grandeur feel with tartan carpet and lovely wood features. Our room was a double and the bathroom space was huge, but did have an enclosed rather small shower unit. There was a kettle and complimentary tea and coffee. The bed well the first might I slept with one leg on the floor to stop me falling out of bed as the mattress had no stuffing on my side and if I rolled over I would end up on the floor. However husband got 2 pillows and put them under the mattress so to raise it up. The room however needed a darn good clean there was thick dust on the bedside cabinet shelves and the carpet had a good inch of dust round the skirting. The wood round the windows were black and all that is needed is a scrub with soap and water. For a hotel there cleanliness was zilch and I dare say that in this age of covid and cleanliness this hotel would sadly fail on an inspection. However, could not fault the food, the evening meal was well presented and tasty and breakfast was help yourself and again good variety for all tastes.
The staff were very helpful and the waiting staff always had a smile even though they were rushed off their feet so a big thank you has to go out to them. Would I return, I would never say never as you have to remind yourself that this is a 2 star hotel and I have seen a lot worse in 3 or 4 star hotels in the UK.

Where to start… we stayed here on our NC500 honeymoon road trip. Check in was fine and the receptionist was pleasant & bubbly.

I’ve seen a previous review of someone comparing it to a nursing home and they’re exactly right… from decor to food it’s very similar..

Our room was dated & damp, the bathroom was brand new though which was the only bonus.

Now we get onto the serious problems.. the food! We weren’t over hungry as we had a big lunch so we just opted for one main course (£9.95 per meal) each off the three course dinner menu. We asked what time they stop serving as we wanted a couple of drinks first but was told that if we wanted to dine there we had to go in straight away as they like to get everyone in and out.. so we got a drink from the bar and went through to the restaurant. Without being rude, the waiting staff don’t speak very good English so we struggled to communicate, it took us three times just to give her our room number. We were shown to our table in the huge but empty dining hall, I ordered chicken Schnitzel with a creamy mushroom sauce & chefs potatoes and vegetables.. my wife had salmon… the food arrived faster than it does at Wetherspoons.. literally a minute after we ordered it arrived and I’m not exaggerating. Myself and my wife looked at each other in shock. What was placed in-front of us was nothing better than prison style canteen food. It was hard, cold & bland. It is obviously cooked well in advance and kept under the heat lamps in a buffet style, I then realised why the chefs wanted everyone in and out as soon as possible.. the longer it’s under the heat lamps, the worst quality it will become. It was nothing short of the worst meal we have ever paid for.

Very attractive hotel both inside and out, my single bedroom was very comfortable with cleaning service most days. The walk in shower was just big enough but nice shower attachment which was easy to work with an adjustable arm which was useful.
The staff were really lovely, helpful and friendly,
However the property fell down in the restaurant department, a catalogue of issues, the staff in the restaurant were great, especially a young Hungarian waitress called Stephanie who was subsequently leaving.
On various occasions during our 6 day stay, they had run out of fried eggs and bacon at breakfast, one morning there appeared to be no butter, only Flora spread, two evenings there was no ice cream available for dessert. Also the lift was quite old and functioned perfectly as long as the previous occupant took the trouble to make sure the outer lift door was fully closed, if not the lift wouldn't work. We were on the first floor and a couple of times had to use the stairs, I have knee problems but could just manage the 2 flights to access my level but, I think the hotel had 3 upper floors!
The food was edible, mostly but one meal including a thick slice of roast beef was not a success, the beef was so tough my knife would not cut through it. The vegetables were obviously frozen and mostly cooked to almost a mush consistency, the crispy skinned sea bass was not crispy skinned albeit well cooked.
None of these criticisms are aimed at the waiting or Reception staff, we learned that the hotel had a new Manager and he was away at a conference, it would seem things were going wrong in his absence.
Strathpeffer is a small, very pretty village, with a souvenir shop, a couple of cafes but little else, a peaceful retreat after a days sightseeing. Nearest town is Dingwall, approximately 15 minutes on the local bus
It is also quite hilly and the hotel is located up a fairly gentle slope from the village square.

My husband and I stayed only one night in this hotel. Thank goodness as it is the worst hotel we have ever stayed in. It has the feel of an old peoples home and has a musty smell.
Our room was adequate although we had no soap for the wash hand basin and there were stains on the wall where previous guests had spilled tea.
When we went for dinner, it took 35 minutes for a waiter to give us a menu and another 10 minutes before our order was taken. The food was dreadful. All prepacked or frozen. My chicken was dry and covered with a disgusting sauce. The vegetables were cold. My husband could only manage soup and a sweet. We were not offered anything to drink.
After looking at the queue for breakfast and with little precautions taken for covid we opted not to have any and left.
I would advise anyone thinking of booking here to think again.

Deli in the square is a great place to eat and it's a very short walk from the hotel ,but book a table a day or two in advance . Its only a small place and gets fully booked quickly and next month you will want to eat inside.
