Very friendly welcome. Hand washing/ sanitising facilities at the door. Room was excellent although no proper chairs to sit on. Meals were excellent, as always. Pre and after meal drinks in the Long room were very well organised with good social distancing - liked the individual buzzers.

This hotel was quite a distance from Lerwick, but with a beautiful view over the lake. The room at Busta House was smallish, but with good storage, although access to the hanging cupboard was hampered by a trouser press hanging on the inside of the cupboard. The major problem was the shower, which did not produce hot water until the 3rd evening. We complained about it early on the morning of the second day to the staff (who in general were friendly and helpful) promised to look at it, but we think that it was our complaint to our tour company, which triggered action and I was finally able to enjoy a hot shower on the third evening. They gave us the 3rd evening meal “on the house” in recompense. Nice, but I would have rather had a hot shower. The water provided for the bath was not hot enough for my husband to have bath on the first evening, but was on the second evening. I can’t use a bath, because of 2 knee replacements. The standard of the restaurant meals (breakfast and dinner) was generally very good, of excellent value and served in huge portions. I was pleased that the restaurant offered a good choice of smoked fish dishes for breakfast. The COVID precautions were reassuringly thorough

We visited the Busta House Hotel Restaurant several times during our stay, both for lunch and dinner, and the food was always delicious! Portions were extremely generous and the puddings were lovely too. Staff were super attentive, friendly and organised. I would go so far as to say that this has been the most covid-secure restaurant I have visited, with numerous hand sanitising stations, a one-way system and pagers at the tables.

We stayed 6 nights at Busta and were impressed with the service, the location, the food and the history of this hotel. The staff could not have been more helpful; they even managed to provide a meal after the restaurant had closed - we had missed a ferry and arrived late. The hotel is well positioned for visiting the whole island but particularly the northern isles. The tariff was very competitive and we were pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food, the wine list and the service. We will be using this hotel again when we return to Shetland.

Stayed here for a few days and would fully recommend it as my 'go to' place when in Shetland.

The hotel is full of character being hundreds of years old and a listed building yet it has great WiFi, satellite TV in the rooms and food to die for. There's none of the miniscule portions you get with some restaurants and it's great quality local fayre. Being in Shetland, seafood is a speciality but there are plenty of other options and vegetarian dishes and along with the bar, it’s all at very reasonable prices. The staff couldn’t be more helpful so I’m sure they would do their best to cater for any other dietary requirements.

The rooms are being fully refurbished and are en-suite with numerous power outlets for laptops etc.

I can’t wait to return.

After reading some reviews I was of the understanding that this was one of the best B&Bs in Shetland unfortunately the reviews didn't live up to the promise.
When I arrived I was handed a room key without the staff member explaining where the room was or some of the basic things you would expect such as dining times. He immediately took a phone call leaving me standing there.
The room was hot and I couldn't open the window due to the angle of the wall outside. The bathroom mirror was filthy. I asked to change room into a double.
The room had two single beds pushed together. The TV was connected with a scart leed, a throwback to the 80s. The windows were filthy. The light switches had other peoples fingerprints on. The phone was thick with dust, the bathroom walls had toothpaste residue on them and again the mirror was filthy. I could hear conversations from below and next door.

It was an odd set up in the dining room with guests wondering in unsure of what the set up was as there was no staff member to greet them.
The decor was poor with wallpaper falling off the walls and seeming little care for quality or checks.

Although my stay was refunded I am concerned regarding the cleanliness. I don't think you would get away with this on the mainline....never again.

Why would anyone stay elsewhere in Shetland? Classic Scottish charm. Delightful staff. Good food at a sensible price. Well place to explore the islands.
We really can’t fault it. Perhaps in this environmentally aware age, our sheets and towels didn’t need changing every day nor our bedroom lights switching on in anticipation of our return. I’m sure energy costs will highlight those issues anyway!!
Well done and renewed thanks.

This is quite a difficult review as lots of things were good about Busta House, including the staff and the food, but when your allocated rooms make it difficult to get a good night's sleep it is hard to be full of praise. The hotel itself has had a lot of investment and several areas looked recently painted and carpeted. In a nutshell, if you stay there then seriously consider avoiding rooms Noss, Lunna, and Lamba due to the minimal soundproofing, proximity to the kitchens, and, in the case of the former two rooms the loud creaking ceilings. The radiators also make loud noises if on. That aside, the staff dealt well with our issues when we spoke to them and I can't fault them for that. The restaurant staff and food, and the lounge were also very nice. If we'd had better rooms then all would have been fine.

Although I’ve eaten here on previous visits to Shetland this was the first time I’ve stayed here and it won’t be my last. The hotel was clean and comfortable. It is rustic and traditional and although it might be considered tired by those preferring a modern hotel I loved it.

The housekeeping of the rooms was excellent but what really stood out was the standard of customer service from all the staff. Made to feel incredibly welcome with a real can do approach. The meals were first class both breakfasts (wide choice) and the extensive dinner menu.

The attention to Covid 19 safety meant our stay was worry free.

Thank you for an excellent stay

let's start with the good bits, breakfast and the breakfast staff were amazing

now, the rest, we had the room Foula..just refurbished apparently, but not very well, standard of decoration and painting was appalling, paint just slapped on. Radiators made a deafening noise all the time we were there and failed to get warm , according to the staff they were filling up... two days and they failed to fill up. No shelf in shower for soaps shampoos etc, sliding shower door is raised off the ground, hurts when you run if over your foot as I found out

On arrival in the room, no soap, no towels, no loo roll, sanitary disposal container not replenished during out two night stay

Bath was huge, but no hot water to fill it, and clearly not been used or cleaned for ages as there was a layer of dust within

Corridor outside our room was clearly unfinished with bare concrete walls, open hatches in the the ceiling void, all though our stay there was a bucket of stagnant dirty water in the corner, it moved location, but wasn't taken away. Broken and taped up window. Filthy fire door

Steps to the hotel are old and steep, but we knew that, but loose and missing slabs on these steps is plain dangerous

Restaurant furniture and decoration is the same as it was 30 years ago .. just like stepping back in time to my last visit

Busta used to have a stunning reputation as the hotel to stay at when in Shetland, I'd promised my partner a magical stay, it sadly didn't happen, we left disappointed and £320 for two nights lighter

Busta, you need to get some of the basics sorted and then look at the detail at the prices you charge

we won't be back

How easy is it to get here from Lerwick
Answer from Ann L

It’s an easy drive on the main road from Lerwick - about 22 miles . Busta House can be spotted as you approach Brae- it’s on the other side of the Loch .. hope this helps.

Is your hotel good for seeing the northern lights ?
Answer from noodeyn
Shetland Islands, United Kingdom124 contributions52 helpful votes
winter is the best time to see the northern lights, if you can get away from the glow of the streetlights and its a clear night you will be able to see them, in the mean time they can be viewed on the shetland web cams in particular the cliff cams

Nicola For some reason, Tripadvisor keeps reminding me to respond to your 'many thanks'. It's not really me just trying to have the last word, honestly! I hope you get your holiday arranged and, if you come to Shetland, enjoy it regardless of where you might stay. regards Joe Rocks ps if you reply to this we might never get out of this communications loop.
