As soon as we walked through the door we knew we had found a great hotel. Andrea and Paul do their utmost to ensure you have a comfortable and relaxing stay.
The hotel itself has lots of character and history and it’s in a beautiful location. Our room which looked out over the sea was large as was the bathroom, the shower was powerful with lots of hot water.
Lovely breakfasts in the mornings and also our meals in the evenings. The mussels were delicious and so too were the scallops but everything we had was great.
We really enjoyed our stay on Shetland and we’re so pleased we booked this hotel, we had the perfect time there.

Me and a friend up from Aberdeen went to the hotel for a meal on Monday night. I had a chicken curry and my friend had a burger and chips. This was better than any curry I have had before, my friend was also impressed with his burger. We sat for hours chatting to the very friendly owners. We were then invited back for an early breakfast before heading north to Unst for our ferry. We had cereal, full cooked breakfasts, croissant’s and yogurts all for a great price. Not only was the food delicious it was great value for money. Will definitely be returning when up north again!!

Spent four nights at the St. Magnus Bay hotel with my wife earlier in the month and just wanted to let everyone know how wonderful it is. The room had a fantastic view of the bay, the food is excellent, and the owners and staff are very welcoming. Let’s start with breakfast, which was wonderful, fresh cooked food, great black pudding and haggis too. The evening meals were exceptional, with massive food portions and gourmet quality food. The bar area is large and welcoming and drinks well priced and I’d say the Guinness is as good as you’d get in Ireland. Paul, is especially good in his barman role, and keeps the conversation moving, and is a great source of local information of where to go and what to see.
The owners and their daughter go to full extent to make sure you are well looked after and enjoying the stay.

The rooms are very clean, comfortable and a good size. Plenty of parking right outside the hotel too!!
This family owned and run hotel is something they should be really proud of. Their hard work and commitment shows!

Can’t think of anything negative to say, even the weather played ball for us.

Being an architectural echo of Norway already marks St Magnus Bay Hotel out as a place of interest with its retro vibe and fantastic sea views but aside from the spacious rooms, its restaurant deserves particular praise.

They offer a very high quality dinner menu that transcends the expectations set by a very functional dining room decorated with Viking kitsch. Local and fresh ingredients are assembled into interesting, well presented dishes. I particularly enjoyed my Cullen Skink. Service is suffering a bit from staff shortages though I have to say that we were unaffected. Perhaps in such circumstances, it would be wise to gently warn people of the risk of delays to soften the incidences of diners getting to their feet and asking why, after 90 minutes, their starters still had not arrived. Given the opportunity to be reasonable, most people will be understanding.

My only other feedback is that the automated lighting in the ensuite bathroom is a nightmare. Whilst I understand it reduces power consumption and simplifies the cabling, having to open the shower cubicle 4 or 5 times mid-ablution to wave my hands around and reactive the lighting is not what I would call a luxury experience.

The hotel is in a remote location just above a beautiful beach. Paul and Andrea are great hosts, working tirelessly to make their guests feel special, and they do. The food was very good and plentiful! and the packed lunches were excellent. We stayed here as part of our trip with Shetland Wildlife and it’s a great base for exploring North Shetland and visiting Yell and Unst. Would recommend

When we arrived we asked if we could get a coffee later - the coffees appeared on a tray in our room just as we were settling in, accompanied by brownies and lemon biscuits, both home made. A lovely touch.
The building is wooden, with a fascinating history, but our room was very comfortable. The bathroom had been newly renovated, with a bath and a well performing shower Something not always to be take for granted...).
Paul is a great conversationalist with an encyclopaedic knowledge of Shetland despite coming from the English midlands originally!
The food is excellent - although be warned, the portions are very large. We weren't sure how they ever sold deserts!
We had some lovely walks, especially around the Ness of Hillswick. We were fortunate with the weather and it is a stunning location.

We just came home after a wonderful few days in Shetland, and couldn't have been happier with our choice of hotel. The location, the unique history of the building, the charming and comfortable rooms, the lovely food, and not least the very welcoming owners, Andrea and Paul, who made us feel at home straight away. They couldn't have done more to make sure we had a brilliant time. They're also very sociable and like to have a chat, and their knowledge and stories about Shetland were much appreciated.

Caya was lovely and the children adored her.

The location is superb, with beautiful views and two beaches close by - one of them with fine, white sand and looking onto Eshaness.

The food was cooked to perfection, and the portions are generous. Our seafood choices were always particularly tasty.

The children loved staying here, and loved the beaches so close by.

Next time we come back to the islands, we will be guaranteed to book here again.

Excellent place to stay. On arrival to our room Andrea came up with tea/coffee and fresh home bakes. Lovely decorated room very friendly owners. Dinner in the restaurant was delicious and big portions with the best sticky toffee pudding you could find anywhere. Good selection of wine on the menu. Drinks in the lounge bar with good company and chat with Paul. Breakfast was super with fresh berries, yogurt warm croissants, toast then a beautiful cooked breakfast. Thanks for a super night Andrea & Paul.

Its definitely a little quirky but if you like historic character, friendly helpful service, great food, comfortable rooms and a stunning location (as we do) then it ticks all the boxes. The welcoming tea/coffee and cakes brought to our room within minutes after we arrived was a particularly nice gesture.

A slight disappointment was that unfortunately the residents lounge ( I was looking forward to a nice comfortable armchair and a good relaxed read overlooking the bay) was not open during our stay although we were free to sit in the bar.

This is a lovely grand hotel in the small town of Hillswick. We stayed here for two nights, taking a cab ride from Lerwick to get here. It was a lovely and relaxing place to stay to experience the gorgeous countryside (although we might rent a car if we stayed here again). The hotel is right by the Hillswick Circular hike.

Our room was great, spacious, with a comfortable bed and a stunning view of the bay. We were a block from the water and right by the start of the hiking trail, so it was a great base for exploring the local area. The room was lovely, with nice wood furniture and leaf light fixtures.

The bathroom had a warm, relaxing shower with good water pressure. Water temperature got nice and hot. The toilet was a bit easy to clog, so we had to be a little careful there.

Our room had been newly remodeled, with new carpet, fancy bathroom walls, and looked and smelled like it had recently been painted but maintained its historic charm.

The hotel had an attached bar should you want a drink or cake, which was good for when you returned hungry after a long hike. Staff was very friendly, welcoming and helpful.

Wifi worked great. This was particularly important, since our cell service here was spotty. Staff had to help us make a call at least once because we couldn’t get our phones to find service.

Overall, this was a wonderful place to stay in a wonderful part of the world.
