We received a warm welcome and help with our luggage; a chair was provided for me as our room was not quite ready, and the cleaning staff we met were very pleasant and positive.
We had a spacious room with dual aspect views (Rm 27); as a superior room, it had a king-sized bed, which was very comfortable. The bathroom was a good size, though a bit more space to put things would be good, and the loo roll holder was rather inconvenient.
Dinner was perfectly pleasant; we’re not talking haute cuisine here, but it was well presented; we chose a very acceptable bottle of wine, and the staff were extremely helpful. A blast from the (70s) past on the menu: T-bone steaks!
Breakfast was the usual offering for a hotel hot buffet. Another blast from the past – actual tinned fruit cocktail!
I made use of the laundry service, which was efficient and reasonably priced; my washing was done and returned to me the same day.

From the first tentative enquiry, everyone we came into contact with was friendly, polite and helpful. Yes, the rooms are slightly dated, but this just adds to the charm. They provide every facility you could need. Our room(32) was huge, with dual aspect views overlooking the lighthouse, sea, Jarlshof and a beautiful sandy beach and airport. beautiful setting!

Easy walking from the hotel door and you will find yourself just staring at the beautiful scenery everywhere you look.

Fast and efficient free transfer from our incoming flight by Martin who was friendly and easy going with a huge can do attitude from the outset. Breakfast and dinner was always tasty with fast, friendly service.

All of the staff were only too happy to chat, answer questions and offer advice about things to do. We had a really enjoyable 5 nights here & would recommend it to anyone. I would also recommend a hire car, which the hotel can arrange at a discount.

Cannot recommend highly enough - after spending 3 days in Shetland for work I am thrilled my company put me in Sumburgh Hotel. The staff couldn’t be more accommodating or pleasant if they tried!

The food has been gorgeous and always of a high quality with great choices. The bars also have a great selection.

The owner himself is sociable and hands on - chauffeuring to and from the airport, serving, and helping guests. All of the staff including the housekeeping staff and reception staff are genuinely lovely and helpful.

The rooms (I stayed in room 21) are simple, warm, clean and welcoming. I had a fantastic view of the airport runways and sea from my window (though not noisy). All the essentials are provided and lovely extras such as hot chocolate and biscuits (replenished daily).

Were I on holiday in Shetland I would definitely book to stay here. Thank you to the hotel team for a lovely experience and hope to stay again! ☺️

This has got to be one of the worst hotels I have ever stayed in. From the first impressions walking through the front door to walking out again (the best part of the stay) you are not left with the impression that any care or pride has been taken in the place for atleast the last 50 years. The entire hotel wreaks of a deep fat fryer to the point I was physically sick and avoided the restaraunt at all costs. The room I was initially given was filthy so I requested a change, friendly receptionist happily did so where I was then given room 30. This was marginally cleaner but did have a funky smell which was evidently coming from the bathroom and after a few hours the closed door failed to contain it to the point it made your eyes water (it was sewage). Midnight, back down to reception again to complain and be moved. Receptionist, great, very apologetic, moved me to room 29. Unimpressive (again) but past the point of caring get into bed and I can 100% gaurantee that the bedding in this previously unoccupied room had NOT been washed or changed since last use. I could have cried with frustration and disgust at this point. Checking out the next morning I find that nothing had even been passed onto the reception from the night before or even any attempt at an apology was made. My company passes alot of business through this hotel and I will be strongly advising people to avoid in the future.

From the outset we knew we had booked a great place to stay. Very welcoming staff and extremely clean. Great room, as a couple we also had a small lounge area with en-suite bathroom that had a bath and separate shower. Our friend a sole traveler was also very happy with his room but no as large as ours. The food was very good, the evening menu had some changes to it daily and again the staff were very friendly. Due to covid we could not have alcohol but the waiter remembered what we had drunk the previous evening and asked if we wanted the same again. Breakfast had plenty of choice both with regard to cereal, yoghurt and cooked. I would certainly recommend this hotel to anyone traveling to Shetland and whilst it is close to the airport it is not a major airport and at no time did this impact on our stay. Fantastic beach right next door. I look forward to returning in the future.

I've used this hotel three times as part of the Shetland Wildlife tours. The place is located minutes from the airport and the hotel provides shuttle service to and from the airport if needed.

It also is located just below Sumburgh Head so we always do the gorgeous Jarlshof to Sumburgh Head & Grutness Circular hike.

The rooms I've seen are the same, a little on the small side but all that you need for a wildlife tour. The beds are comfortable, the pillows very thick but you can ask for thinner ones if that is your preference. The shower pressure was great and the water hot and steady! Just what I needed after a long day out in the variable Shetland elements.

The breakfasts are generous, with self-service cereals, toast, yogurt and juices and then made to order hot dishes. Isabel was very efficient at getting our orders in to the kitchen so that we didn't have to wait. The full Scottish is something one has to do at least once during the stay! Dinners are delicious though our menu with the tour is more limited in selection.

The staff are friendly, efficient and helpful. I highly recommend this place.

Traveling with my husband and father, here on the Shetlands to attend Up Helly Aa. I started looking in August for a hotel (for January) and everything was booked. I reached out to Sumburgh Hotel and corresponded with Martin. Very helpful and accommodating through the whole process. He arranged a Chalet for us and answered all of my questions. It was so good to meet him in person- truly a jack of all trades. The chalet is great- a 2 room chalet which was stocked with teas, coffees, and treats. Very clean and perfect. The restaurant was also wonderful. Compliments to the chef for creative and delicious dishes. A wide range of vegan and gluten free dishes as well. Conveniently located to the airport, only about .5 miles away. I would definitely recommend this hotel and would stay here again.

I’ve been to Shetland many times and have often wondered what it would be like to stay here.
I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the hotel. I had an inside room which was huge for one person which I appreciated as I could spread out my wet clothes, the heater was efficient and dried everything off overnight.
The room was very clean if a little dated but you don’t go to Shetland to look at interior design.
The restaurant was very good value and the three evening meals I had were of a good standard. I don’t eat much at breakfast but I could see other guests taking advantage of the plentiful buffet style breakfast.
Above all I want to mention the staff who impressed me throughout my stay. From the welcome I received to the waiting staff they were so professional and looked the part. I didn’t see the cleaning staff but they obviously took pride in their work.

We stayed here for two nights following our arrival at the airport, and one night before our departure, and I recommend this arrangement, as the hotel and its environs are a wonderful place for a holiday in their own right. We had an excellent room with panoramic views over the sea and the headland; it was spacious and comfortable and well-appointed. The room had a good bath as well as a shower. The restaurant provided excellent delicious meals for dinner and breakfast. The staff were helpful and friendly. Covid precautions were properly in force but this did not detract from our stay.
The hotel provides free transport to and from the airport terminal when guests need it. But on a nice day if you don’t have luggage, it is a delightful one-mile walk, along road verges filled with flowers including orchids, and a beach from where seals and seabirds can be seen in the bay.
It is worth having at least one full day here because short walks lead to two of Shetland’s best attractions. The remarkable ancient village of Jarlshof is by the shore adjacent to the hotel: you can see excavated houses from the Bronze Age to the medieval Viking period. And a beautiful coastal path (abounding with wild flowers and birds) leads up to Sumburgh Head, a mile away, which has some of the best scenery and bird cliffs in Shetland (with puffins).
The only drawback, when you are outside during working hours, is the noise of the helicopters at the airport which run their engines even when not flying. But in long summer evenings in good weather it is idyllic. Altogether, this hotel provided us with an unexpectedly luxurious start to our visit to Shetland.

Enjoyed 5 nights at here in October. Food was good and it was great that breakfast is available from 6.30am most days - perfect for making the most of each day. Evening meals were good too, including a lovely roast dinner on the Sunday. I made use of the takeaway menu & room service which worked well. The staff were friendly and helpful, room was good. Despite being a 'standard' room, I still had some seaviews which was great! Location is brilliant, right by the sea and good scenery and walks. On a bus route as well so easy to visit other areas. The hotel is close to the Sumburgh airport so there was noise from that at times, but it was still peaceful and better than English suburbia.
