My wife and I stayed at the Herrislea House Hotel from January 25th through the 28th, 2020 and were there to attend the 2020 Up Helly Aa Viking Festival which is held on the last Tuesday of January every year in Lerwick, Shetland Island, Scotland. The Herrislea House Hotel is an eclectic mixture of modern and rustic and is located near Lerwick. The owners, Gordon and Marjorie Williamson, are both native born to this region and went out of their way to make us comfortable. Marjorie is a wonderful cook and hostess and our stay with her was definitely one of highlights of our trip to Scotland. From the hearty Scottish breakfasts and delicious dinners served in the dining room to the midday tea and later wine in the parlor, the owners made us feel warm and welcome. If you want to experience rural Scotland at its best, we strongly recommend a stay at the Herrislea House Hotel.

Never made more welcome anywhere than my stay at this quaint hotel. The host David and his family were lovely and so accommodating. Having just had a stay in hospital before my visit and with special dietary requirements, David went out of his way to make sure I had food that I could eat and cooked to my needs.
The hotel itself is in a great location and is dog friendly which I was struggling to find. It is decorated in an old fashioned style which is part of its charm. The rooms are absolutely spotless with beautiful bedding and spotless good quality white towels.
Great tea and coffee tray with a couple of goodies which was a nice touch.
Massive big TV to watch at night with some Freeview channels so that we could watch a movie.
Would highly recommend at stay at this hotel.

We happily recommend the Herrislea House Hotel. David and the staff did all they could to make us feel welcome and at home, from hiking recommendations to plates of fresh baked goodies on our return to the hotel after long days of exploring Shetland. It was a pleasure staying there.

David is an excellent host for the Herilsea House Hotel. The room was cosy and familiar feeling, we felt comfortable straight away. It was clean and comfortable and had an excellent TV with plenty of hot chocolate, tea coffee and dairy milk! The dinner was lovely and the breakfast was fantastic. Me and my fiancé would come back here in a heartbeat. The views from our room were splendid and it’s and excellent location - so close to town, thank you David!

Stayed here whilst training with the Coastguard, it was a great location with great staff and the breakfast was perfect .
Is there a ghost??? I didn't touch the TV or the remote but the TV came on a 2am I also felt like I was being rolled over I bed all night, then the second night as well as being rolled over I woke again at 2am to find the room phone ringing through to reception 😀.
All added to the experience.
Again I had a great stay many thanks

Shetland isn't cheep for accommodation and neither is the Hereslea House Hotel.
It's a quirky place in terms if decor that certainly isn't contemporary. Everything worked in the room and bathroom, the water was always hot. The place was extremely clean and I enjoyed the breakfast, there was lots of choice. Good location for Lerwick, 5 mins in the car.
I would stay here again.

I'm guessing the decor would not be to everyone's taste, animal heads on wall, lots of oriental decoration, Room very comfortable, plenty tea/coffee, storage, shower over bath, all very clean.
Lovely young receptionist, very efficient and pleasant. Bar service in sitting room, again with quirky decoration, we liked it, very individual.
Breakfast lovely. Evening meal was less so.

We booked this hotel after hearing some good reviews particularly relating to the restaurant and given that we understood they raised much of their own produce / lamb etc we were really looking forward to our overnight here and especially the dinner.
It seems we were the only ones there that night and we definitely felt as though we were an imposition. The owner herself took care of us and it seemed there were no other staff on duty when we arrived and that evening it seemed only her and a cook were on duty.
Rooms were clean but definitley not four star. Beds were not particularly comfortable.
We freshened up and had drinks in the front parlor before dinner. The atmosphere was more like a funeral home and we felt compelled to whisper (to be fair we certainly didn't need to but it was just one of those places where it seemed appropriate!)
They seemed extremely anxious to take our order and get on with dinner and we constantly had to ask for a few more minutes to enjoy our drinks before ordering.
We were then shown into what can only be described as a very bland dining room which they have tried hard to make interesting with various bits and pieces from world travels but it doesn't work and they need a decorator! The choice of music through dinner was also very odd...60's love in for the most part which just doesn't work with dinner.
The food was not very good at all. Of four dishes ordered only one was good. One had to be sent back as was inedible and the other two were fair at best. This was really a disappointment.
I had understood they were famous for their lamb...this was one of the worst lamb dishes I ever had.
The menu is also unimaginative and almost everything is pan-fried.
At both meals we ate there had to ask for simple things like salt and pepper and bread and butter were severely rationed.
During the night there was a lot of banging of the front door of the hotel which was annoying.
At breakfast the next morning, as we ordered the owner muttered under her breath (but clear enough to be heard) "oh you are all having something different"! You have to specify two eggs..if you ask for "fried eggs", you get one. Also the order was not complete. They removed orange juice glasses the moment you drank the last drop as if they were afraid you might have a second glass.
It is also VERY quiet here and unless you are lucky enough to hit on one of the evenings when they apparently have local music it is difficult to find anything to while away the evening. The hotel is quite isolated but the road immediately outside is narrow and quite busy and not conducive to a stroll after dinner.
At check out we were informed they do not accept Amex. Then they said my Mastercard was declined which I found to be extremely surprising and when I tried it just a few minutes later elsewhere it went through quite easily and when I called the credit card to check this they said that there had been no decline on the card and seemed the hotel did not actually process this correctly. Luckily another in our party was able to use his card and pay an amount that was well in excess of what this hotel was worth.
I would agree with the previous report that staff were aloof here and food was poor.
An elderly member of our party stumbled down the stairs as were leaving and this was witnessed by a member of the staff but no-one seemed to care.
Perhaps it was because it was the end of the season but we definitely felt as tho we were imposing upon them by being there.
The owner was also visibly miffed that we had stayed at another hotel on the island the previous night - we were grateful we had since our one night here was extremely disappointing and absolutely not worth the money.

The room was neat and clean. The staff were aloof and the food in the resturant was terrible. If you are visiting Shetland. FInd somewhere else to stay.
