We stayed at the Baltersound for a couple of nights at the end of September as part of our Shetland holiday. We have visited on three previous occasions and Steve (manager) and Steve (Chef) couldn’t have been more helpful, friendly and welcoming. The cabin was warm and cosy and bathroom was clean and fine for what we needed. Food prepped each evening was delicious - good wholesome food, tasty and well presented. Unst is a pretty small, remote island and after the Covid season we have all experienced I think it is a credit to the two Steve’s that the hotel is open and still serving breakfast and evening meals. Yes it’s a bit quirky, but then so is Unst itself - it sits in an amazing location so relax, enjoy and make sure you book again to keep this little gem open and running - we will definitely be back in the future - thank you :)…
Enjoyed an incredible stay here! Very friendly owner who went above and beyond. Simple but lovely & clean cabins to stay in & good food. Very much recommend...wish I could have stayed longer! Hope to return soon!
We loved this place. The buildings and the reseption (and the rooms) are a bit old fashion, but dont be fooled. This is a jem, when it comes to food. Three dishes, all very tasty and on å surprisingly high level. Professionally presented meny, our Unst crab salat (starter) was just perfect, then we all had lamb for main dish. Very, very good. Isnt it quite cool that instead of upgrated rooms, they focus on the food? The very nice waitress/caretaker (the hosts were on holyday) said that the cook used to work in a Michellin restaurant. That explanes a lot. Hope they can keep her here, making the jem even shinier!
Had booked in for 2 nights at the beginning of September and have to say I was very unhappy and upset when I left here. When we arrived we were put out into a cold, tired looking cabin. Thought when booking a double en-suite, it was the hotel, so make sure you clarify that if you do have to stay here. Noticed a few woodlouse in the bathroom and bedroom, some were promptly ousted, then I noticed mushrooms growing in the corner of the room. A few insects I could maybe deal with, but fungus was a no from me. My husband went to complain, and we were moved. The second room did seemed better, even with the comedy iron burn on the carpet. Problem was the mattress was so bad, ended up in quite a lot of pain. So barely had a wink of sleep. Didn’t help in the morning when we could barely get any hot water from the shower. The food the night before has mixed reviews. My husband seemed to enjoy his fish and chips, but my steak was over cooked and very fatty. Was ok. The cooked breakfast sitting out didn’t look very appetising. So I just had a little juice and cereal, so did my husband. So even though it was going to leave us without a place to stay and spoil our plans on Unst, we decided to check out the next morning. I couldn’t put myself through another night there. Not sure what reasons my husband gave when checking out, but know he said he didn’t want to complain any more. I’ve stayed in many types of accommodation from tents, caravans, cabins etc to varying stars of hotels, so know that things might not always be to my taste. I just wanted a clean, warm room, with a comfy bed and a decent feed. Didn’t get that and was very emotional due to pain and lack of sleep. Manager did try to make up for it, which is why I’m not giving one star.…
