What a magical place to stay! The tower is imaculately clean and welcome basket was wonderful - thanks to Sandra the housekeeper. The tower is amazingly kitted out in the kitchen, has a tv in the great hall and a lovely wood burner. It was not cold as there was also heating. The stairs were very steep and I bumped my head about 7 times but it was part of the charm of the place - you learn to take everything you need with you when you go up or down. We loved shutting the gate and letting our dogs and son explore the orchard - so much outdoor space was wonderful. It was only 5 min drive to Tesco or aldi on Carluke and the train station there had free parking. We slept so well in the castle we felt bewitched 😁. We will definitely stay again - in better weather a bbq would be great.

Just spent a fantastic week here. If you want to stay somewhere pretty unique cannot recommend highly enough. The tower is great, old but also really cosy and comfortable. Lots to do in the surrounding area - walking, golfing etc. Both Glasgow and Edinburgh easily accessible via trains from Carluke. New Lanark only 10 minutes away. Lovely basket of goodies on arrival. If you need any further information during your stay contact Sandra the housekeeper who is incredibly helpful. Will definitely be back!

Five stars does not do the Tower of Hallbar justice. It is in a class of its own. This is not your usual holiday let. Can we give it six stars? When reading earlier reviews, it is worth noting that for about 15 years, it was run by the Vivat Trust. Standards evidently fell as Vivat ran into difficulties. When Vivat Trust folded in 2015, the Tower of Hallbar went back to the family that has owned it for 350 years. Talking with the owner who currently has stewardship of it, it is clear that he is dedicated to making this property truly outstanding. If you are lucky enough stay here you will understand why the family has kept the tower through so many generations. It certainly charmed us, and made it very hard to leave! Nowhere we have ever stayed comes close. It is an extraordinary place that combines the history of a 500 year old building with modern, high-end comforts. It is like time-travelling …but with a dishwasher, wi-fi, and a beautiful ensuite bathroom in the glorious top-floor bedroom . But anyone who needs a lift should not stay in a 500 year old tower. If there are such people in your party, they should stay in the adjacent cottage instead. We loved peace and warmth of the great hall, then going up to the battlements to watch the moonrise. In the morning we awoke to the birdsong from the surrounding woodland. Our kids (10 and 13) loved the Harry Potter feel (“like a wizard’s house!”), exploring the hidden delights of the tower, and playing games in the orchard, woodland, and stream. There are beautiful walks from the tower if you follow the path through the wood and find the footpath network that can take you to the River Clyde. We also had a great walk to Craignethan Gorge. At Hallbar, you feel like you are in an ancient, secluded, and very special world of your own. It is a rare gem.

This was a beautiful place to spend the weekend! The tower is full of character and it was brilliant fun getting to explore the different levels and experience the history of the place. I would fully recommend a stay here to explore the area with attractions such as New Lanark only a few minutes drive away. The building its self was clean and we were provided with a very generous hamper on arrival. an the Bothy next door was perfect for anybody who might be daunted by the archaic stairs! Well worth a trip!

Just returned from a great weekend spent at the Tower of Halbar which we booked through Little and Large Holiday Houses a self catering property agent. Got a lovely welcome hamper from the owner Ronald filled with wonderful goodies. The property was clean, very well presented and we took great enjoyment in exploring each level of the tower. The stairs were also a fun challenge especially after a glass or two of wine. The great Hall was very cosy, made even more so with the wood burning stove and the perfect size for the 5 of us. We also had use of the Cottage which was nice and homely. The location is handy for travel from Glasgow and just a short drive to New Lanark where we enjoyed a great walk along the Falls of Clyde and exploring the New Lanark World Heritage site. Would definitely stay at the property again
