Cosy and homely B&B, clean and warm, new bathroom. Nice view of the shore, kipper for breakfast was very nice. Joy is a helpful host, providing us with useful information on getting around the island.
We were a group of 6 motorbikers visiting the Island. Joy, our land lady, even moved her van out of the drive so we could get all 6 bikes off the road. Booking was very easily done via emails even though we had a couple of call off's Joy dealt with these very well. Food good and as much tea toast etc as you could eat, rooms clean and more than adequate. Location perfect for the return ferry, although in our case it was cancelled due to the weather. If I go back to Islay this is where I'll stay.
A belated review for a stay in June 2019. We stayed here on the recommendation of some friends who had stayed at Askernish in March last year and couldn't fault their suggestion for a place to stay for our first visit to Islay. Joy made it very easy to arrange our reservation in advance and was very welcoming when we arrived an hour late after a ferry delay, even checking that we had dinner arrangements. We felt right at home, staying in a room with a bathroom across the hall for the first night and then moving into an en suite next door. The beds were comfortable and the showers modern and hot, the 2 main things that for us, can make or break a stay. Breakfast was cooked to order and plentiful, with tea, coffee, juice, cereal and yoghurt also available for you to help yourself to. It was lovely to have a chat with Joy and the different guests that were around each morning (Germans, Brits and Australians during our stay), to get their take on life and interesting things to do and see. We loved our visit to Islay, taking in as much of the island as we could in 4 nights. Askernish is less than 2 minutes from the ferry port in Port Ellen, so it was very easy to make our way home on our last morning. Joy even let us use her hose and bucket to ensure our hire car looked presentable to return. The location is great for walking the trail to the 3 distilleries and for getting the bus to other parts of the island if you don't have car and the Islay Hotel next door and Sea Salt Bistro serve good food. Definitely recommended if you are looking for somewhere welcoming and well located to stay - thanks Joy!…
Great spot, 1 minute from the ferry, loch front, middle of Port Ellen. Joy made our visit so happy, lots of great local intel, very well appointed ground floor room which she juggled quickly as I'd had an accident the previous week. Great breakfasts ,including cook to order kippers or haddock.Such a magical island, and the holy trinity of famous peat whiskies a few minutes drive away!
Fifth visit on Islay, first time at Askernish. Joy is a great host - very nice conversation during a very good breakfast. Perfect location - a couple of minutes walk from the ferry and right besides Islay Hotel and restaurant. Room was clean and with a very nice view over the bay. Very helpful and straight forward booking - would have liked to stay longer, hope to be back one day.
