You will be waking up at whatever time in the morning the people in the room above you get up because of the horrendous noise from the floorboards.
Lovely staff.
I checked in and no help was offered to bring in bags. The lift was not in use but luckily we were only on the first floor.
I got into the room and it was small, looked nothing like their photos on the website but it was clean. The decor was dated. The shower pressure was non existent and even my husband struggled to wash his hair.
After checking in, the lady on reception went straight into asking what time we wanted to come for breakfast and whether we were dining in the hotel. I wasn’t offered a map or given any recommendations of what to see whilst in Tobermory. I found a map on the side and at that point, decided that we did not want to eat in the bar.
Instead we ate in the Western Isles Hotel which was literally down the road. The food was exquisite and the view spectacular.
We went down for breakfast the next day and it was fine. Coffee was not good and the coffee grains had escaped the filter in the caffetier.
The bed was ok but pillows were not comfy. The walls were paper thin, I heard the next rooms alarm go off at 6am.
On check out, we didn’t even see a receptionist and a box labelled keys was left on the front desk.
No personal touches and not much thought to decor for our room or the breakfast room/bar.
It was fine if you are not intending to spend much time in the room but definitely NOT worth the £125 we paid per night.
Positives:
The rooms were very clean, our room had a strong smell of Bleach and was immaculate. There is also quite a pleasant beer garden at the front and side of the hotel with a stream running down the left hand side of it. They have obviously spent some time and money on this and j enjoyed reading my book and having a drink in the sun one afternoon. The bar area is functional with a good selection of spirits and beers, and every member of staff we encountered was very friendly and helpful. We had breakfast here both mornings which was enjoyable and there was a wide selection for the continental and cooked breakfast.
Negatives:
The whole hotel is very old and dusty. There is alot of ancient memrobillia around which is covered in dusts and makes the place look old dirty. Lots of old bookcases filled with books from the seventies or eighties. And strange ancient ornaments. In order to spruce the place up (considering the price they are charging!!!) they need to ditch all the old ornaments and weird wall hangings and give the place a fresh lick of paint. There is a strong smell of grease and cooking fat throughout the whole hotel. A few diffusers wouldn't go a miss and maybe opening a couple of windows. Don't be fooled by the photos on booking. Com your room will look nothing like that. While functional our room was tiny with a lumpy old mattress, the chair next to the desk was badly stained (with god knows what) and the inside of the bedside tables were filthy and probably last opened in the 1960s. There is a Very steep hill to get the hotel and it is pitch black at night. I wouldn't feel safe walking back to the hotel on my own you can't see more than half a foot in front of you! Worst of all was our evening meal. I ordered garlic mushrooms which was some mushrooms floating about in oil, cream and some garlic (all curdled together) there was a hair on one of my mushrooms... Then I had the scampi which had obviously been brought from the nearest supermarket was so obviously frozen!! The chips were at least a day old and had obviously been re heated in a microwave! If I had thrown one off my partners head he would have a dent out of his skull! I would have given feedback to the waitress but we weren't asked how everything was she was in too much of a hurry to get back to chatting to a table of regulars who appeared to holiday there frequently and thought the place was marvellous 😳.
The chef came out afterwards in plain clothes looking rather dishevelled which probably explains where my hair mushrooms came from 😂
Overall it was functional for what we wanted (a bed after a day of exploring) given the close proximity to the town centre I still don't think they can justify the prices they charge for this old run down "hotel"
Our room was very small and tired, we had to sidestep our way between the bed and the wall dipping our heads to avoid the wall mounted television.
The floors creaked like a portacabin in our room, the ones either side, the ones above and below. The walls are so thin you can make out conversations.
On our second morning we booked our breakfast for 8am, as we stood in the queue the waitress squeezed past us to leave the room and was followed five minutes later by the waiter, they both returned a further five minutes later with no explanation given. When we got to the front of the queue we were asked if we wanted tea, coffee etc. and told to wait until the coffee was put on the table before we could sit there.
Then our food order was taken, thankfully we didn't have to leave the table so it could be delivered!
We had booked our breakfast for 8am to go on a whale watching trip at 9.30am but it was well after 8.30 before we were served our food with the result that we didn't have time to finish it or we would have missed our trip which costs £60 per person, at least this booking is worth the money.
The free parking is mostly taken up with workmen's vans during the week so guests had to find somewhere else to park.
The hotel is up a very steep hill above Tobermory and we were advised to take a taxi to and from the town centre because of darkness and potholes so you can add at least £10 a day to your stay.
We didn't see many happy faces here on the faces of staff or guests, as we came downstairs to reception,
(under the stairs), we heard the receptionist, (owner?), berating a worker in overalls carrying a paint pot and brush. Not a nice thing to hear.
We were in room 12, below our window lots of people smoked, chatted and made phone calls, we could hear all that was said and were subjected to cigarette smoke if we had our window open.
Thank goodness for MacGochans, friendly pleasant staff and great food made our stay almost bearable.
Never again. 👎👎
Thank goodness for MacGochans
Small car park with no directional sign where the reception was.
Receptionist was more interested in charging our card - £129 on arrival
Room was small supposed to be 'Superior' and bed springs could be felt through the mattress, dated decor, no blinds although we were on ground floor next to the entrance.
Given a £15 meal voucher and dinner reserved for 7pm. On arrival met by the barman to be told there was only himself and the chef on and were expecting a party of eight in 10 mins!
He went to check with the chef if ok to take us and was told NO.
We left and and found a lovely Restaurant down the front in the Tobermory Hotel
Breakfast choice was non existant.
Complained to the receptionist in the morning and was reluctantly refunded £15
DO NOT recommend and would never visit again
Yes, the hotel is on a hill. Had you done your research before booking, you would have seen this. You would also have been able to see the surrounding area so I don't think it is fair to criticise the hotel for the location.
Each to their own, but our experience with the hotel was great. Nothing was too much trouble for them and Seamus is an absolute star. He was single handedly working the bar and restaurant and he did it all without complaint. He was run off his feet but was pleasant, helpful and took time to chat with everyone. This made us feel very welcome.
The food was delicious from breakfast through to dinner. A good choice and freshly cooked. Reasonably priced.
Our room was on the 2nd floor, comfortable beds, clean, warm and had a great shower.
All in all, I couldn't fault this hotel and would certainly recommend it. If you are looking for a 5 star property with staff at your beck and call and everything on the flat then I would suggest somewhere else, but if you are looking for a small, welcoming hotel on a beautiful island which has everything you need for an enjoyable stay, then look no further.
"Be careful of the walk up the hill from the harbour it’s quite steep unfortunately."Read full review
