We were there August last year (2015). Weather was dry and warm with one showery day, but surprisingly we weren't bothered at all with midges. Take repellent though, just in case. Avon make a good one

We drove to Fionnphort early morning to catch the Staffa boat trip to see Fingal's Cave, taking the most direct and fastest route there. In the afternoon we took the ferry to Iona and explored there. We then enjoyed a leisurely scenic drive back to Tobermory. A wonderful day to remember
