Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We spent three nights at Tanasay House. This is a small hotel with just a few bedrooms and personal service. We were made very welcome by Murdo who really put himself out for us, including scouting for EV charge points in Portree! The room was excellent with very comfortable beds and linen and plenty of space. Supurb view from the bedroom and dining rooms. Food is excellent and is prepared by Scott. The price for our room included bed, breakfast and evening meal. We can thoroughly recomend Tanasay House and would certainly return.

An absolutely incredible place. Everything is clean and lovely. Murdo has great recommendations and helps you plan your days to make sure you see as much as you possibly can. Every dinner here was a 5 star experience -- it was some of the best food we've ever had. Cannot recommend this place highly enough!!

This is a spectacular boutique hotel on the Isle of Skye. Murdo, his wife Alicyn (who designed the space) and son Scott provide extraordinary hospitality in a new hotel perched over the harbor in Portree. With only 4 rooms, and full board (breakfast and dinner), it's a cozy, delightful experience. Murdo runs the front of the house and is a great source of tips about exploring the island. He set us up with a local fellow to fish in a local loch, for instance. Scott's cooking and preparation are 5-star quality. Breakfast can be hot or cold, with great Scottish choices. Dinner is prepared to order each night, with two choices each for starter, main and dessert, depending on what Scott has foraged and found fresh from local purveyors. There is a fine wine and whiskey selection, as well. Perfect for a romantic sojourn or, as we did, a visit with friends.

We stayed for 2 nights at Taransay House during our tour of the Scottish Highlands and Skye. This is such a unique experience and if you're looking for excellent accommodation, friendly and professional hosts and unbelievable food (breakfasts and dinner), this is the place to be staying. Murdo and Scott were both brilliant, Murdo has a very friendly, eager to please approach and is superb at what he does. Scott is an exceptionally talented chef and having eaten in many highly regarded restaurants over the years, Scott's background working in some of Scotland's most respected Michelin starred restaurants shines through - he knows his way around a kitchen! Then there are the personal touches, Murdo and Scott both communicated brilliantly pre-arrival concerning both our accommodation and dinner choices. We absolutely loved Scott taking the time to talk to us about dinner for the second evening following our breakfasts - he made some suggestions and then refined based upon our likes / dislikes before heading off to buy the freshest seafood. Wow! In summary, Taransay house as a package (brilliant accommodation, truly lovely people and that unbelievable food) is worth the trip to Skye for alone. The next time we're up in Skye we wouldn't consider staying (or eating) anywhere else - we cannot wait to return!

This place is a true gem and was the highlight of our trip to Skye. Murdo and Scott were incredible hosts and gave us an experience unlike any other place we've stayed. The accommodations looked brand new, everything was spotless, and they provided little extras in the room like slippers, drinks and snacks that made our stay very comfortable. Murdo gave us excellent hiking recommendations that took us to beautiful locations away from other tourists. Scott is a very talented chef and you will not get a better meal anywhere else on Skye. Having both breakfast and dinner included in the rate was a fantastic option that made the stay truly unforgettable.

There are wonderful places to stay and then there are extraordinary experiences. Taransay House is the best of both. Murdo, Alice and their son Scott have created the perfect place to stay in Portree along with some of the best meals I have had in a long time. Everything was fresh picked or caught. And they couldn't have been more welcoming. As we walked in the door, Murdo was pouring a local Scotch that made us feel right at home. And if that wasn't enough, he gave us wonderful tips on places to visit on Skye that were as beautiful as those you read about in the guidebooks but absent the crowds. The net was an experience we will never forget.

Fabulous in every possible way. A great location, it is new and simply beautiful. We were welcomed with a dram of local whisky. Murdo graciously carried my luggage up to room 4 which was lovely. Such a comfortable bed, great pillows and a fabulous bathroom. All the rooms have a sea view. And the food—a major WOW. As you would expect, the breakfasts are great, but the dinners! Sublime. Scott is a fantastic chef. Fresh salad with local ramps, scallops and cod were among the best I’ve had anywhere (including Michelin restaurants). And same with lamb and venison. Dining room has 4 tables ( for each guest room) so you can visit with others or not, as you chose ( we did and compared notes-very fun). Do not th No twice. This is THE place to stay on the Isle of Skye.

My wife and I spent 3 delightful nights at the Taransay House at the end of September, 2022. Murdo, the owner/manager, was a wonderful host and very helpful on places to eat in Portree and with lots of good advice on driving around the Trotternish Penninsula. His local knowledge on how to access the Fairy Pools and avoid the crowds was really helpful. The Taransay House feels very new and was constructed in 2019 with very little use during the Covid shut-downs. It only has four rooms. The rooms are spacious with large well-appointed bathrooms. The rooms are tastefully decorated and very comfortable. Nice views of the water can be seen from the rooms and there is also a nice patio with water views. The included breakfast is ample and well prepared. Dinner is served upon request although we chose to eat in town - an easy 10 minute walk. We have only positive comments and would highly recommend the Taransay House to anyone looking for a home base to explore Skye.

This was the highlight of our two week trip to Scotland. Murdo goes way above to help his guests. Our room was on the first floor and was spacious and comfortable with a huge new bathroom and a patio. Each morning Murdo would look over what I had planned for the day and adjust it to both the weather and his knowledge of the area. He suggested local hikes instead of the ones I had chosen and he was 100% spot on. We hiked for 3 hours and only saw 1 person yet shared the trail with hundreds of sheep! He also recommended which places to skip due to crowds and recommended a fabulous boat ride in Elgol. Breakfast was included and had lots of delicious items to choose from. We enjoyed poached eggs with avocado on homemade sourdough toast and scrambled eggs with salmon as well as locally stocked cheese and bakery assortments. They do offer dinners to guests and we met with Scott in the morning to choose our menu. He made a special trip to the fishmonger to ensure we had the freshest ingredients. Our meal began with homemade chips with tarragon dipping sauce, fried goat cheese for me, a haggis croquets for my husband. It was followed by seared fresh scallops and the main meal was very fresh salmon served with delicious pickled veggies and grilled carrots. Not that we needed more to eat but dessert was equally as good with fresh strawberries, with cream, elderberry sorbet and toasted milk. If that wasn't enough they sent us to our room with some homemade chocolate hazelnut macroons and bars of white fudge. Scott makes everything fresh and it was a meal we will not forget. I HIGHLY recommend you cancel all other dinner reservations and only eat here, every taste was out of this world and he should be a michelin star chef! We've enjoyed meals all over the world and this was top of the list. We highly recommend staying at Taransay House when visiting Isle of Skye- you will not be disappointed.
