Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The owners were very nice and helpful, and toilet/shower facilities (nice hot shower!) were pleasant and clean (bring your own towel). There is an excellent drying room, which is usually key if you're camping in Scotland, and a sink with soap and sponges for washing up. Right beside that is a charging station for devices. There are picnic tables to sit and eat, but don't forget to bring Smidge spray and a head net! Like anywhere in the highlands, the midges can get annoying. The hostel/campground is conveniently located near Kinlochleven's Co-op and a chip shop. Also, keep your eyes open for red deer crossing the street :)

I camped at the Blackwater hostel whilst some of my friends glamped or stayed in the hostel. We were all really impressed with the way the campsite had adapted to make people feel safe during Covid. There was hand sanitiser inside and outside the entry doors and people were asked to wear masks in the bathrooms unless they were brushing their teeth or showering. The outdoor washing up facilities and charging point was a big plus too. The hostel kitchen is large and had a maximum of 8 people allowed including the dining room which made it very easy to maintain distance from other users whilst cooking and eating.

Reviewing camping at this location.

A small site catering for 1-2 man tents and with limited pitches. Ideal sheltered location within the village. Full amenities either on site or in the village. Showers/WCs, dish washing and drying for gear are all well built and maintained, also open all night for late arrivals or early starts. I booked and checked in/out online which worked seamlessly.
More suitable as a stop off en route for hikers/ bike packers than as a base to explore from.
Highly recommended.

We stayed here on our last night of the WHW. The site is in a good location, 200m from a co-op and fish and chips and there is a little path down to the river and falls a stones throw away. The showers and toilets were decent and they have a good drying room and an area for campers to wash their dishes etc.
We booked one of the smaller 2 bed pods, but in hindsight wished we booked a larger one as it was a bit cramped and absolutely boiling hot. Yes it is summer but even at night it still felt and smelled like a sauna, even with the window open and we were absolutely sweating all night. It was OK if you had the door open but then that allowed the midges in! Having a fridge, kettle and microwave is a good idea but the fridge takes ages to get cold and the fan powering the fridge just makes the room warmer and the same when you boil the kettle... would probably pay a little extra and stay in one of the B&Bs in kinlochleven

Hi Annie, thanks for staying with us and for taking the time to leave us feedback, very much appreciated. Sorry to hear you found the pods hot - unfortunately in summer, when we do get the sun this is unavoidable - we do try our best and provide fans for the pods to help cool them down but sadly the weather ..and the famous west coast midges..are out of our control. We do hope that this hasn't put you off returning and we are grateful again for you choosing Blackwater :-)

We camped in Blackwater. The website allowed payment online and the email communication pack once booking was very detailed and answered a lot of questions (post covid19 & other).
Checking in was easy and contactless thanks to the information provided and we had plenty of space apart from other campers (2 person tents only!).
The toilet/showers were well policed and very clean. It was also quiet during night hours and the sound of the stream in the background created a relaxing experience.
In terms of location, both Glencoe and Fort William aren't far away but Kinlochleven offers a much more peaceful and less bustling touristic stay. Perfect for relaxing with some amazing views down Loch Leven.
Only negative we faced is if you come in midges high season make sure your prepared! It was some of the worst I've seen anywhere during my travels around Scotland.

Good location, we did the north coast 500 and went further to fort William. This campsite was very convenient for us. The pubs are just round corner although didn’t offer food at the time of our arrival maybe due to covid 19. There is everything you need camping on the site, showers washing up station, drying room, Charging stations and free internet. Only downside was the midgies but it was to be expected due to time of year so be prepared for them if going at the end of August-September

On behalf of the committee of Forfar & District Hill Walking Club, thank you for refunding the full cost of our hostel booking for 20 and 21 March – 40 bed nights. This was cancelled at short notice due to the current COVID-19 virus. We look forward to getting back into the hills and supporting Scottish hostels once again. Difficult to rate as we did not stay. I stayed at Blackwater Hostel on the 24th and 25th August 2020 with two friends. We did not break any hostel rules, and we treated the place with respect, despite the service being poor, and the hostel being closed every day between 9.30AM and 3PM which is very disappointing. We left our room in perfect condition. Despite this, I received a threatening and aggressive email from the hostel the day after we left saying we had left the place a tip, treated it like "a bin" and should "never return". They claimed we had a dog, which we did not, and have charged us £30 for having a dog. This is ludicrous. We are 3 respectful female students travelling on a budget, and cannot afford to be charged for things we have not done. I would not recommend staying here. The weather was awful, we stayed during Storm Francis, and yet still we had to vacate the hostel at 9.30AM every day and could not return until 3. No bedding due to coronavirus and the drying room is poor. If we were paying £15-20 a night this might be fine but it cost an extortionate £150 for 2 nights.

Naomi Cooper-Jones You state you are 3 students and you left the room in perfect condition. Well it took our cleaner 1.5 hours to clean the ensuite bathroom alone thats before she started on the room so in total is took her 2 hours to clean the room and bathroom. By the end of it she was in tears and very distressed, infact this is the first time I have seen her is such a state of dispare. When we realised what had happened we helped her clean the rest of the hostel. Our cleaning regime is extremely strict ,every touch point in every room and every surface has to be cleaned then fogged to disinfect all areas. You are correct and we are grateful that you have highlighted that the hostel is closed from 9.30am until 3pm for cleaning. The day you left we did not have the hostel ready for 3pm as your room was left is such a state. WE CAN CONFIRM WE DO NOT WANT CUSTOMERS LIKE YOU. We want customers to repect our staff and our accommodation. Maybe in the future you will consider the people that have to clean your mess up when you leave a premises.

I stayed at Blackwater in September whilst walking the West Highland Way. I was caught in heavy rain the whole day and was drenched through upon arrival.
I arrived around 2pm and there was no staff at reception or anywhere to be seen. The toilets and showers were closed from 10:30am - 3pm for cleaning which is ridiculous and there was nowhere to shelter or sit to warm up until they reopened... the drying room was open so I could hang my soggy things up but when the owner eventually turned up he refused to turn on the heaters on until 9pm. My sleeping bag was damp and there were many other hikers who wanted the heater turned on earlier but he refused without any explanation, just saying it 'drove his head in'.

On top of that, there was nowhere for campers to shelter or rest. There is washing up area with a small shelter over it but nowhere to sit to eat or socialise.

Good points: good showers, close to facilities in town eg pub and shops

Given that most other campsites on the WHW charge £5-10 per camper while Blackwater charges £15 i would expect better facilties and treatment. Not worth it.

Bethany, sorry you were caught in heavy rain during your West Highland way trip, Callum the man you spoke gave you a dry sleeping bag for the night I note you did not mention this in you review. Thank you for highlighting that the drying rooms go on overnight and stay on all night, callum did explained the reason for this is that if they are put on during the day nothing dries as folk are in and out all day letting all the heat out everytime someone opens the door and very often the dryng room is left open. We only accept online bookings due to the pandemic, so you would of been aware of the price before you arrived and yet you still booked with us. We do not advertise a communal space for campers to socialise during Covid 19. . Once again thank you for highlighting that the showers and toilets are closed from 10.30am until 3pm then again from 7pm until 8pm as this allows us to follow our strict cleaning then fogging with disinfectant regime. We wish you well and hope you enjoyed the rest of your holiday

Very clean and organized, all of the 10 rooms en-suite and the kitchen well stocked and large with dining area. Our small dog, a border terrier, was allowed to stay with us if on lead elsewhere on the property. The room even had a skylight with a view as well as a television, almost unheard of in a hostel, Outside were glamping pods and a camping area - as this hostel on the West Highland Way, I imagine they are occupied quite a lot. There are drying rooms and 2 pubs and a grocery within walking distance.

I stayed on a wooden pod but that would only accommodate 2 adults and 2 children ( -depends how big and what the children are- you might be able to put two small children in one single if they are small. ) I did not stay in side a hostel-so can't comment on the accommodation in the building.-Sorry. Is three £50 the total price for the week? If so that's pretty good for five of you ? hope that helps-enjoy
