On arrival my husband and I were very warmly greeted. All the current Covid 19 instructions for the hotel were explained, along with details about the sanitisation of the bedroom, dining room and the rest of the hotel. We were told to keep our key until our departure three days later. The room was immaculately clean with a balcony and a view of the loch.
On entering the dining room we sanitised our hands before going to the table. We have got to mention the quality of the food. It was amazing. every dinner started with an Amuse Bouche, followed by a Starter, an Intermediate, a Main and a Dessert. The variety include venison, halibut, salmon, lamb, not to mention wood pigeon, calamari, crab, sole, mackerel, and cullen skink. As for the deserts - wow, spectacular. The presentation and the flavours could not be beaten. This is 5star++ cuisine.
Finally we must mention the friendliness and absolute professionalism of all the staff. The waiter and the waitresses made us feel very welcome which makes a delicious meal perfect.
Thank you all very much.

We returned here for Hogmanay 2019/20 after spending our honeymoon at Kilcamb ten years ago. The hotel is set in a beautiful location with stunning views over the loch and plenty of lovely walks in the immediate vicinity. The decor and furnishings are first class creating a beautiful “country house” feel.
The attention to detail from the owners through the staff is second to none - nothing is too much trouble and they all go out of their way to make your stay special. We particularly liked the fact that the owners and their family chose to share the Hogmanay celebrations with the guests and the whole evening was really special from being piped into dinner through to the fireworks at midnight.
It can be difficult to find a hotel of this quality that welcomes dogs but Kilcamb does a super job.

Thank you for your lovely review of Hogmanay at Kilcamb Lodge. It was a delight to have you as part of the special celebrations. We were very happy that you enjoyed the Gala dinner and fireworks so much especially as it is the culmination of a year of hard work for everyone at Kilcamb - it means a great deal that everyone has a truly unforgettable time. We are always happy to have dogs at Kilcamb but we try to do it in a way that ensures our non- dog-loving guests are not inconvenienced and feel totally relaxed as well. It was a great Hogmanay, thanks to lovely guests like you who helped the party to be such a success. Thank you! Our best wishes and fondest regards, Sally, David and The Team.

We thoroughly enjoyed both the Christmas and New Year packages at Kilcamb. The Christmas Dinner was a lovely affair, beautifully decorated tables complete with posh crackers & party poppers. We particularly liked that we could choose the time we ate, allowing for a nice long morning walk beforehand. After an evening buffet provided as well, we were well & truly full up!
The Hogmanay meal was an absolute treat, all the guests ate together on one long beautifully decorated table, more crackers & party poppers! It really was like a country house party, the fact that most guests had never met before didn’t matter at all, as new friends were soon made.
The staff were all fantastic, hard working, extremely professional, but very friendly at the same time, not an easy balance to achieve. Thank you to all of you.
We particularly enjoyed spending time with the owners and their party over Hogmanay, they were very welcoming and although were clearly still on duty supporting their staff and providing the midnight fireworks, they joined in as all the other guests.
The hotel is like a wonderful old country house, comfortable, charming, spotless, so welcoming, with fabulously tasty food. It was beautifully adorned with lots of Christmas decorations making it feel so cosy and christmassy. Add in the beautiful setting on Loch Sunart, and the wonderful surrounding countryside, there really couldn’t be a nicer place to enjoy the festive season.

Apparently Kilcamb Lodge was good in the past, if hotel awards and restaurant awards are to be taken seriously. Unfortunately, an ownership change coupled with pandemic impacts have left this establishment seriously failing at a very, very high price point.

A positive is that the location and Loch views from the large, very dog friendly front lawn are spectacular. Another positive is that the bulk of the staff are very help and friendly.

The list of negatives is far, far too long for a hotel charging almost gbp400/night for the room alone. As a comparison, Kinloch Lodge is a top class effort and result at a similar, if not less expensive, price. This hotel is seriously mis-priced for what is offers today.

So here goes ... The rooms are stale at best and ratty in reality. Very few rooms have anything approaching a loch or mountain view due to the bizarre construction of the building. At least Rooms #10 and #11 both overlook the parking lot and are located above the active kitchen with its accompanying noise and cooking smells. The manager of the hotel is a shocker. Nowhere in Pavlina's vocabulary were the words "I am sorry, there must have been some mixup with your reservation, but do not worry, we will do our best to sort out your needs". When confronted with a check-in situation, she was nothing short of unhelpful with a touch of animosity about her ways. It is obvious and a fact that she lacks the demeanor and skills to handle such hospitality. Her reactions and actions were appalling. Moving on from Pavlina, unfortunately, the first five course, and £65 per head, tasting menu dinner was just awful. Dish after dish was bland at best. There was none of the promised fresh seafood. It was as if Gary, the reknowned chef, was absent or worse. The breakfast, which is hard to mess up, equalled the quality of dinner, amazingly. I am happy to say the the a la carte menu and breakfast were a large improvement to acceptable the following night and morning, but nowhere near the standards of the awards previously given and touted on the website.

We understand that an ownership change into a pandemic was a real challenge, but to say that you should stay away until, and if, New ownership can refurbish rooms and refresh the food and staff would be an understatement.

For these prices and even at half the price, the experience here is horrendous. Your time, money, and appetites can be satisfied in many other lovely and well run Scottish establishments elsewhere.

Dear Kevin C, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We are sorry to read that your recent stay with us wasnt up to your expectations. The Team here at Kilcamb is nothing less than polite and professional hence our suprise when we read your comments. Gary's food is well known and respected by our guests as it is easily reflected in our 600 excellent reviews. On arrival in the hotel it became aparent that you have made a mistake on your booking and failed to let us know that you are bringing a baby with you, which we have rectified for you, however you were clearly upset and blamed Pavlina for your mistake, when all she was trying to do is fix it for you. We can understand your frustration at the time but in no way should that be an excuse for your abusive bevaviour.

This hotel is in a stunning spot with extremely friendly well trained staff.
The food was of a consistently high standard throughout our stay and my only criticism would be lack of variety as the menu doesn’t change very much.
Our main complaint is the hotel itself which we feel is in need of complete modernisation.
The furnishings and carpets in both the bedrooms and public areas require upgrading and are not what I would expect for the high room rate.
The gala meal on New Year’s Eve was excellent as were the fireworks at midnight.
The owners, two family members and two friends joined us for New Years Eve and all meals in the hotel until the 3rd of January which we felt was rather unprofessional but the New Years Day ceilidh was superb and was a great way to end the three day package.

I’m delighted that you enjoyed our Hogmanay Celebration and particularly our Ceilidh, fireworks and gala dinner. It was a great pleasure to welcome you to Kilcamb Lodge. After 25 years as hospitality professionals, we take pride in our guest care and ethos; never more so than during Hogmanay. Many guests have become lifelong friends over the past years and we are always honoured to join them for dinner or drinks etc, when invited. This can include family members as well, who, by definition have become friends of these guests over the years. It can sometimes be challenging to create a balance between the familiarity of regular guests and ensuring an equally warm welcome for our new guests. As I’m sure you were aware, for that reason, we dined separately in a private dining room. We joined the celebrations only for the Hogmanay gala champagne reception and dinner where we take the opportunity to welcome, meet and greet all our guests. Our Staff are also invited to join the fireworks, post dinner drinks and Ceilidh dancing as a gesture of our respect and thanks for their hard work and commitment over the festivities. The warmth and congeniality of an authentic Scottish Hogmanay may not suit all and perhaps from that aspect, Kilcamb was not for you. With great respect to you, regarding our hotel decor and furnishings, we operate an on-going annual upgrade program every year, including new carpets, furnishings and refurbishments etc. Your comments expose a glaring disparity with our awards, such as Best Loved Hotels “Best UK Small Boutique Hotel”. Voted for directly by our customers. In addition, our long established AA and Visit Scotland 4-Star accreditation. Not to mention the many contrasting observations and sentiments shared by our guests on Trip Advisor and other similar review sites. With our best wishes for a Happy New Year. Sally Fox

Before the pandemic this hotel had become a favourite of ours. It has changed ownership but on a two-night stay we were delighted to find the understated quality and old-fashioned charm have not changed (despite some public rooms and bedrooms having had a tasteful makeover). The staff are attentive but not intrusive, the food fantastic, and the location idyllic. Relaxation is on tap! We'll keep coming back.

We were due to stay at the Kilcamb Lodge for 3 nights from the 5th August for my wife’s birthday having first stayed there in 2008 and at least 10 times in total over the years on each occasion having a thoroughly delightful vacation.

Prior to booking this trip I read the owner’s letter covering Covid on the hotel website which advised that adjustments had been made but that guests visits will not be different in any major way which is totally untrue.

Firstly the hotel website states that the hotel restaurant has panoramic views being one of the best in Scotland ,has a most romantic setting and that guests who book on a half board basis will automatically be reserved a table there where in fact it is dependent on which room you have booked as only certain rooms allow you access to this restaurant with the remaining rooms being allocated a table in a overflow dining room which has been created by using the lounge which is adjacent to the front door of the hotel which in my humble opinion lacks that panoramic view and that romantic setting previously described although there would be the added bonus of watching patrons coming and going ,guests dining in the Brasserie and staff preparing drinks at the bar.

Secondly because the first lounge is now being utilised as a overflow dining room there is now only one lounge which guests can use which I believe is described as the library but the major change is that only 6 guests are permitted in this room at anytime.
I asked the staff member Helen what guests were expected to do if they entered the lounge and found that the room already had 6 people within to which she stated that entry was not permitted.
I then clarified with Helen that if I intended to have pre or post dinner drinks to find that the room was full to its new capacity I had two options either to return to my table if after diner or to go to my room.

After Helen then telephoned the owner Mrs Fox I was advised that my deposit would be returned which I accepted and left .

So to sum things up there is a chance if you visit that you will not have access to either the main restaurant or the only lounge and will hence spend your time in your room or alternatively you could sit in your car in the car park which has wonderful views of the loch but lacks that romantic setting

Response from Sally Fox, General Manager at Kilcamb Lodge Hotel & Restaurant

You are misleading guests who may wish to visit Kilcamb. We clearly state on our web site that Covid has by necessity, changed the way we operate and we also go on the mention our revised dining facilities to allow social distancing. We were shocked by your anger on arrival at Kilcamb for your anniversary break. You refused to accept the table we had allocated for you and demanded we should move someone else so you could have the table you wanted, otherwise you would check out. During Covid, Our restaurant set up has had to be adjusted. We now only have 8 rooms open instead of 11. We have had to separate and space out the tables in order to achieve 2 metres social distancing. This has meant that we can now only have 5 tables in the restaurant area, and we have moved 4 tables into our lounge area. The temporary changes we have put in place were done for one reason only - To Keep You Safe. Helen tried to explain this to you but you were so enraged at that time and insisted that if you could not have the table you wanted in the restaurant and we did not move someone else so this could happen, you were leaving. I think I should explain at this point, as Helen tried so hard to do when you arrived, that we were unable to move you to the restaurant because it was full prior to your arrival and indeed your booking. Your demands would have inconvenienced a family of 4 who had been staying for a week or another party of 4 friends, who had also been with us for two days or a couple who were half way through a 10 day stay. You noticed 3 additional guests arrivals on our welcome notice, stating that any one of them could be moved to satisfy you because they were new arrivals like yourself. What you did not allow us to explain, was that all three couples were already allotted seating in the same dining area we had offered to you so this would not have achieved the Restaurant table you were seeking. Please believe me when I say, we would have moved you if it had been at all possible to do so. Why would we not? All our guests on half board booking are allotted a table in our restaurants and we would usually give guests the opportunity to change tables during their stay so they can have the opportunity to sit at the window tables, especially on a special occasion. Now we are operating under Covid restrictions this is no longer the case. Guests are allotted a table for the duration of their stay. Again, to keep you safe. Our restricted space in the drawing room seems to be working well. We time table sittings in such a way that space for coffee in the lounge is rarely a problem and should guests have to wait a little then usually they do so happily or remain at their table for coffee. Most seem to understand and appreciate that the new measures are for their own safety by reducing close contact and the risk of contamination. We have enjoyed the patronage of many long standing and valued customers like yourself, since we re-opened in July. Many have written lovely reviews on Trip Advisor. All of them have accepted and praised our new Covid 19 adjustments and careful safety measures we have put in place. They have enjoyed their stay, praising our food and the courtesy we afford our customers but also and more importantly, they felt safe. In these challenging times, the latter has to be our main priority. I am very sorry that you were so aggrieved and that we were unable to give you what you wanted but had you stayed, I feel certain that the serenity of Kilcamb would have calmed and subdued you so you could have enjoyed a lovely anniversary stay with us with great food and our legendary service - and at a table which does actually have a lovely view of the Loch - the same front facing view as the restaurant in fact. Had you calmed down enough to go to your room, you would have found a newly refurbished bedroom with a lovely seating area and a new modern bathroom as well. We had also fogged your room with antibacterial sanitiser and left a bottle of Champagne for your anniversary with our compliments. I maintain that the changes we have had to make to ensure the safety of our guests, do not compromise the pleasures of a visit to our lovely hotel and it’s stunning location. I deeply regret that you decided not to stay, it was a great pity but I hope you will return again one day soon. Perhaps when we are allowed to revert back to normality and you can have any table you want. With kind regards Sally Fox Hotel Owner

We were two mature couples, very experienced in international travel, staying four nights after a fortnight driving round the Highlands and Islands. We cannot understand the previous negative reviews. The staff were charming and efficient and the food very good. The rooms were very comfortable and clean and if they seemed dated, it was probably due to the country house style, entirely appropriate for the location.
The staff and management clearly were suffering from the combined impacts of covid and brexit, insofar as they were very short handed. Nevertheless they were very courteous and efficient and nothing was too much trouble. An excellent birthday cake was produced at short notice and the chef was able to adjust very well to our friends’garlic allergy and onion intolerance (something that seemed beyond the wit of The Thee Chimneys) and produced an adjusted set menu for them each evening. Whilst it is expensive, so is the rest of Scotland and it certainly didn’t disappoint. Would definitely stay again.

This beautiful country home let’s you wake up each morning with stunning views of the Loch and Surrounding Hills. Our room was spacious, up to date, and well appointed- very comfortable. The ownership has done all they could to retrofit an older country home with modern comforts. Meals are gourmet. Plentiful breakfasts are made to order and the five-course gourmet dinners are well worth the price if they don’t come with your package. The small staff is friendly and very hard working. Nicely stocked bar- especially if you are after special gins or single malt whisky. Award winning wine list. Price is not for the feint of heart but also not out of line for Scotland, especially with what you get and where you are. We would highly recommend Kilcamb Lodge and can only imagine things will look up even better when the pandemic passes and they can return to regular operations
