Travellers' Choice

Steeped in history and within the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park, our beautiful old "drovers’ inn" is waiting to give you a warm welcome. The community of Gartmore purchased the Black Bull in 2019 and have worked together on a huge refurbishment programme. We are now the proud owners of a fantastic pub with wonderful restaurant, friendly staff and stunningly beautiful bedrooms.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A fantastic community run Pub. The room I stayed in was beautifully decorated and well appointed. Room and Bathroom spic and span. Warm and friendly reception from the staff. Ate a great meal in the bar area and thoroughly enjoyed the pub atmosphere with an open fire and friendly locals. Breakfasted like a King! The Gartmore Heritage Room is a feast of local history. I would definitely recommend the place and I will definitely stay again ( if it’s not already fully booked!!). Thank you Black Bull. Gareth

Gorgeous little pub with a very friendly atmosphere. We arrived in the afternoon and had a stroll around the village before check-in. Staff were all friendly and welcoming, the bar was inviting a cosy with a gorgeous fire burning. Lager was good - Black Bull of course! We ate in the bar in the evening and the pie was the best my husband had ever had he said. Room was clean, comfortable and well stocked with drinks and toiletries, bathroom looked new and the shower was great. Indulged in a Scottish breakfast before our adventures and I have to say, it defeated us both - a first! Really tasty and again, very friendly staff. Would highly recommend and give this little place a 10/10.

A last minute biking trip to Aberfoyle saw me booked in at The Black Bull for a couple of nights. Check in was quick, easy and friendly. The room was perfect with everything I needed. Comfy bed, soft towels, toiletries, tea and coffee, biscuits etc. The room was also spotlessly clean. I had an evening meal in the pub and this too was very nice. Breakfast was cooked and served by a friendly chap who did a great job. There were a few items missing from the breakfast menu, but I think this may have been a result of the recent floods in nearby Aberfoyle. I was compensated with extra bacon. Parking was free and easy. There is also bike parking and a workstation for repairs, all just outside the pub and free. The bike parking isn't secure so bring a decent lock. Only downside was their wifi was not working and this hadn't been mentioned either prior to my arrival or upon arrival. When I asked for a password I was told the network was open but may not be working. It wasn't working for the duration of my stay. As I was trying to work remotely this was a problem. This is no doubt a temporary issue and definitely wouldn't stop me returning. In fact, I hope to return pretty soon. Thanks for a great stay

Hi D2637TXmarke Thank you for taking the time to leave a review and feedback. We are happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us. I apologise for the wifi problems that you experienced during your stay, we experienced a major issue with our BT broadband, and were waiting for additional equipment and engineers to arrive to rectify the situation, which meant that only our essential equipment was able to be hardwired to our router during that time. I apologise that you were not informed of the issue upon check-in. We hope to see you again in the future.

The good stuff: Rooms are lovely, a good sized, comfortable bed in a large, very clean room. Dinner was delicious. The pork belly was a particular highlight. The bar is warm and homely. We enjoyed listening to the locals enjoying their Saturday evening together in a very welcoming bar. Seeing people bring their dogs along too helps with the feeling of homeliness. Highly recommend an evening in The Black Bull. The not so good stuff: Our room was directly above the restaurant dining area. For some reason the music stayed on all night in the dining room. This meant I was awakened by drum beats on a regular basis throughout the night. I had an awful night’s sleep. When I asked at check out why the music was left on I was told it had been an error. I was shattered all day We were given a breakfast order form at check in to complete, which we did and handed to bar staff in the evening. When we arrived for breakfast our hot food was brought to us at which point we were told there was no sausage and no alternative was offered. Probably seems like a small thing, but my wife had only ordered a couple of items, so basically was given a half empty plate. These issues were very specifically ours I expect, but they did somewhat spoil our short break.

Hi Bufty100 Thank you for taking the time to leave a review and for the feedback. We are happy to hear that you enjoyed your meal and time in the bar with us. I sincerely apologise for the oversight of my staff leaving the music on in the room below you all night, it was a genuine error on their part, however I understand your frustration on having to hear the faint bass in your room all evening. I have also passed your feedback on to our kitchen team with regard to the lack of square sausage at breakfast. Unfortunately, our local supermarket recently experienced a severe flood that had left it with no fridges, so when it was discovered that there was no sausage for breakfast, more could not be sourced for that morning. I'm sorry your wife wasn't offered an alternative, however if she had mentioned it at the time, we would have been more than happy to cook additional items for her. Once again, my apologies for the music and lack of breakfast item. I hope you will consider staying with us again in the future.

Perfect location at the edge of The Trossachs. Friend and I spent one night here, and after long walks around the many forest tracks and lochs,we returned for a lovely dinner and a couple of drinks in the bar. The rooms are cozy, with comfortable beds and a great shower . Also an excellent breakfast to kick start your day. Staff are attentive and really friendly too.

We absolutely loved our stay at the Black Bull recently. The setting, the pub, the restaurant and the rooms were all fantastic and we felt very well looked after throughout. All the staff we met were kind, friendly and extremely helpful and we felt warmly welcomed. We had an evening meal which was delicious and very good value and our breakfast was cooked to order and was really superb. We will definitely be returning and I would highly recommend a stay here!

We stayed here for one night. The check in time said after 5pm but we arrived about an hour before this but we were able to check in as the room was ready. The room was nice and big with a king size bed, which was very comfy, and a decent size bathroom with large shower. It looked freshly decorated and was nice and clean. There was a kettle with tea/coffee and a couple of biscuits. The in room TV had freeview channels. There was free WIFI but I think the area was having some WIFI issues and it took a while to connect, eventually we got it to work. The Inn has a restaurant and bar on site, which also serves food. We ate in the bar for dinner and we both had a burger with chunky chips that were really good. The inn is in a small village and it was very peaceful causing us to sleep well. There was breakfast included in the room price but you need to choose the hot breakfast items the night before and hand it in to the bar downstairs. This wasn't an issue for us and they had a good selection to choose from and included vegan sausages. There was also other items at breakfast which you just helped yourself to, i.e fruit juice, natural yoghurt, cereal and fresh fruit, toast was also provided. The breakfast was cooked well and was good. All the staff were helpful and attentive, we would recommend a stay here.

A lovely little pub with rooms set in amazing countryside. Just on the eastern edge of Loch Lomond national park, this is a personal, well presented hotel. The rooms are comfortable (bed was firm and lovely pillows). Bathroom was modern and clean. Food (dinner and breakfast) was lovely - you place the order the night before so it is cooked for you. Would recommend.
