Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

Food was fantastic, atmosphere was calm and pleasant. Had an absolute blast with the locals and staff. Very friendly and up for a laugh, this was the highlight of my holiday. Good people, good food, what more can you ask for.

The hotel was lovely, staff friendly food good. Let down by room, no privacy. Room on ground-floor with large window and glass door, no screening from outside apart from heavy curtains, people walking by could see straight into room. Could do with blinds or voiles. Had extra taxes added onto bill at end of stay, unsure what for.

"I have been a lodger at the Clonyard for several years now and have always enjoyed the old, vintage character of the hotel. But, it saddens me to learn to the young, cheerful girl on the bar, Ashley, is no longer there. She was the life and soul of that hotel. It is no longer the same without her. Food is still good though".

Been going to Dumfries and Galloway for over 10 years now and have never known about this little gem, had it recommended by another local pub which since Covid had to stop serving food and am glad he did recommend it, best food I have had locally, best price found and with the owners wife being Thai lots of the food has a Thai twist really bringing some nice flavours out, oh and the locals are really friendly. Definately recommend. Ian from Doncaster

Mediocre food, dated decor, untrained waitress that we felt sad for. What more could we say? Overcooked risotto, evidently the last portion to be microwaved, steak- if that was 10oz it must have shrunk in cooking, and certainly not medium rare, and my requested salad became chips but it was evidently a waste of time to try to correct. The ‘soft tannins’ of our wine were rather too evident to be described as soft! The 2 stars are for my freshly cooked banana dessert. Profiteroles came with powdered hot chocolate drink as the sauce.

We have been aware of the Clonyard Hotel for quite some time and were aware that in years gone by it enjoyed a positive reputation. However we recently had a one night stay at the hotel – and are extremely grateful it was just the single night. The grounds and characterful exterior of the main building are deceptively impressive, since the interior is extremely tired, in particular the room allocated to us. It was clear that various repairs to our accommodation had been attempted over time, but to a generally very poor standard. Worst of all however was when we came to use the shower the following morning. The flow of water coming out of the shower head was so weak that it was barely more than a trickle. Worse still was that the water temperature was lukewarm at best and even this only after letting it run for several minutes. And even that didn’t last long enough for my wife’s shower when the water ended up quite cool. For a hotel not to be able to provide its guests with the basic facility of hot water to bathe/shower is extremely poor. When these issues were raised when checking out, it seemed to raise little interest, other than a suggestion that they would look into it. Needless to say, we will not be returning to find out if they have followed through on that front. As a footnote, I suspect any prospective guests with mobility issues may experience issues. For example there are certain paved areas where the slabs are very uneven, broken or loose. Some would possibly be a trip hazard at the top of stone steps. (See photos). Again a possible sign of lack of ongoing care and maintenance of the premises to meet current standards of care to guests. All in all, an extremely disappointing experience.

This was a find for me. On arrival I was greeted warmly and shown to my room. The room was very comfortable, warm and with a lovely garden view. The setting of the hotel is really beautiful and very quiet. In the bar there was a roaring log fire and again the staff were very friendly and chatty. The food was fine as were the drinks and I spent two very pleasant evenings here. As a solo traveller, I am used to being fleeced for occupying a room to myself. Not here! The single occupancy rate was very reasonable and i will definitely be back!+

We booked in for a bar supper to celebrate our anniversary ss we had hesrd it was a great place for food and service.I had gone in the day before to book a table and was greeted very warmly and tge placed loked lovely.Sadly on arival tonight we found the opposite. In the bar loud trance music was thumping out and we were shown to a table that had such low seating, not great for dining. Our order came quickly but the one female member of staff seemed very distracted. The food was tasty, the vegetarian rissotto was delicious, tge haddock and chips tasty but smaller than normal portions. Our first drinks arrived but a second order was forgotten by the distracted female staff member. The awful loud trance music thumping out really spoiled the atmosphere, not suited to the diners who were mostly older people. We were told by other diners, regular guests at the hotel, that the owner has been trying to sell it for some time.It shows, the place is lacking in many ways.,especially in staff and atmosphere, very disappointing.

Initially was staying for 3 nights but they happily extended it another night short notice. If you want a hotel that is rural, old and a true Scottish feel then this is for you. I really loved this hotel, the staff were so lovely and spent time to chat with me. High spirited staff. Breakfast offered a full cooked meal or toast and cereal. Don't forget a coffee! The food is amazing! I'm talking 5* food. There won't a meal that I didn't enjoy. The room was homely and large. There was a full wall legnth window letting in so much light and a door to a garden. There were two comfortable seats, a small table and ashtray (thankfully for me - a smoker- there was also a comfy area out side of the dinning room with cushions on the seats, protected by a roof so you could smoke in comfort and be protected from the rain). There was a partician wall between each room so when you sat outside the room you had privacy from other guests. If you like animals then they have 2 resident cats! Also if you sit outside at night you will hear the foxes, badgers and roe deer! As it is so rural you get a great view of the stars and could even see the arm of the milky way. They had blankets in the room for extra warmth incase the Scottish air was a bit nippy. There was an electric heater in the room for a heat boost also. I used it once due to being against the elements/rain and wind for a whole 10 hours. Warmed me up nicely. Along with the kettle, tea and coffe in the room and a nice biscuit. There are also radiators in the room. The bar is lovely, older style with a warm homely feel. The beer selection and the spirit section were well stocked. It was an old feel to the hotel however that was what made it so great, a truly beautiful older building that boosts great detail within. House keeping came daily however I had accidently locked my room from the inside and left for work out of the back door (as quicker to the car park) the owner/manager informed me that house keeping couldn't get into the room that day and asked if I needed anything for the room and that he would sort it. Great service and dedication to their guests. Reading some below reviews about rudeness... unfortunately I cannot agree. They may seem abrupt with their accents but they are the nicest staff and people and go the extra mile for their guests. I will be returning with my family and three kids as it is truly a hidden gem in the rural area of Scotland. Thank you for making my stay so lovely and for always giving 100% even at the busiest times!
