From the minute my partner & I arrived at the Birchtree we were made feel extremely welcome by every member of staff we met. Our room was clean & well maintained with a lovely view over the river. The bathroom was modern and the shower was amazing & there was a good selection of white fluffy towels. The food was very well presented and tasty and great value for money. Every meal was delicious. Big shout out has to go to Elsie who from the minute we arrived made us feel so welcome and seemed to pop up working in every area of the hotel! A lovely lady! Well done Birchtree on outstanding customer service we will be back!

We stayed here for 3 nights. Not been to this part of Scotland before, but it was perfect for a quiet weekend away.
It was very dog friendly, all staff were very friendly and welcoming, especially Elsie who served breakfast with a smile and would refresh our towels and tidy our bed.
The rooms were lovely and decent size. Blackout blinds is great for those who struggle to sleep! Only bad thing I’d say is our room was right above the small beer garden so when we had an early night it was a bit noisy, but it was a Saturday so totally expected.
The bar area downstairs really was one of the best parts of the hotel. The duke box to play your own music was great for the evenings and the drinks were so reasonable priced we were very happy!
The bar staff are lovely and polite and would try their best to save a table for us when we went out for a meal, despite it being quite busy with locals.

Area of Dalbeattie - small little village but everyone incredibly friendly and nice park nearby to take your dog.
Luigis Italian next door was one of the best Italians I’ve ever been too. Such a good price and the food was amazing.

It is the perfect place to stay for a quiet weekend for dog walking and outdoors activities. Not so much for shops or lots of bars. Would definitely revisit and stay at the birchtree hotel

The Hotel allows dogs to stay on payment of a small supplement, and allows them in the bar area, which means they can stay with their owners as they have a bar meal but they are not allowed in the main restaurant which is totally understandable. The room was of good quality and on a hot day the opening window and fan allowed us to cool down.
The evening meal was excellent and there was a very good choice of gluten free options, and the breakfast had similar options both meals were delicious, for a hotel the bar prices were reasonable.
The staff were pleasant and attentive to the guests, would certainly stay again.

It was the first time we stayed here I can honestly say I will not be going back. We were put in a room directly above the bar the noise was ridiculously loud so we didn’t get much sleep, we were put right next to the restaurant so people were walking past shouting & taking on mobile phones. There was no consideration for other guest whatsoever. The beds were rock hard & the pillows were like bricks, the window cleaner was cleaning the windows at 8.30am Saturday morning.
The bar area was packed you couldn’t get to the bar even if you wanted to. There was no social distancing and no mask being worn either which was very worrying. We went to another place down the road for food and drinks the social distancing there was amazing, all the staff wore masks, there was a buzzer system on the tables so you didn’t even have to leave your table the service there was excellent & the food was great.
We had breakfast in with our stay which I can honestly say was the only thing that was good about the whole thing. The breakfast was delicious all freshly cooked but the service was extremely slow, it took 15 mins just to get a pot of tea and another 15 mins before breakfast actually came.
I would not recommend staying here and I would definitely not return, a poor end to our holiday for my husbands 50th birthday

Originally went in to shelter from the rain, and found a very pleasant bar area, and settled into the comfortable chairs around one of the socially distanced tables. The staff were very safety conscious and efficient, taking our order from the table. Intending to just stay for coffees, we settled in as we watched the rain bouncing down, and ordered from the lunch menu. I'm not usually a 'burger for lunch' person, but the burgers were delicious, and the 'eat out to help out' scheme made it very inexpensive. A couple of 'halves' completed the lunch. The hotel is alongside the river, and there was a gazebo with tables set up in the grassed area by that river. A happy accidental find.

The room was very big, with a small two seater sofa at end of bed. The room was L shaped with a very large bath in the room, with a shower, sink and toilet in bath room. I personnely don't like baths in bedroom. The bed was comfy and the room was clean and tidy. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The patio at the back of the property, overlooking the river was a nice touch. We watch the bats flying around when it went dusk. The food was excellent both the evening meal and breakfast. Only draw back no car park. But you can park on street opposite for free, because its only a small quiet town it felt safe to park.

Curt and untrained, the adolescent staff were the hospitality industry equivalent of the floundering local team, Dalbeattie Star F.C.
I would echo the comments of other contributors about the breakfast area disorder.
Though to be fair, my family arrived when the kitchen was in crisis apparently due to the absence of the mythical “Jan” who was revered by the staff. However, the staff who were there didn’t help themselves by sitting on the fire escape stairs, smoking and scrolling through their Instagram messages while we stood by a filthy table awaiting service for 15 minutes.
The family room my wife and I shared with our 12 year old daughter and found that the glass box shower in the bedroom simply isn’t appropriate!

The check-in duties are performed by the bar manger professionally and efficiently.
The room was clean and spacious; we heard very little noise from the bar as we were on the top floor.
The late breakfast was adequate but over-cooked. The seconds day I had (on request) 2 perfectly poached eggs on toast. Had Saint Jan returned?
Reasonably priced.
Avoid rooms on lower floors.

A lovely hotel in the centre of Dalbeattie. No parking on site but free car park just across the road. Our room was beautifully furnished, the pub part is warm & friendly. We didn't have an evening meal but the full Scottish breakfast included in the room price was excellent overlooking the river. There is a terrace too which I'm sure will be delightful in the warmer months. We have been a couple of times now & would definitely return and recommend!

I knew as soon as arriving the place was not the cleanest, there was a smell & the stair were rotten. The guy who checked us in was nice but found the rest of the staff to not be very welcoming & they are quite unprofessional. They were on their phones, one was in the bar with a cigarette in his mouth, like they couldn’t be bothered. The bar down stairs is full of locals and the staff seem to be more friendly & accommodating to them, not really a nice atmosphere in there. We arrived Saturday night & it was like a nightclub downstairs, hardly got a wink of sleep it was that bad. Loud music, banging, shouting, people arguing outside just terrible. The food menu looked good & it did actually taste okay but was brought out 10 minutes after ordering, the breakfast was average. Sausages were horrible & cheap but the bacon was nice, asked for no beans on one breakfast & it came out with no sausages & another with no mushrooms. The rooms are basic but worst part is that there is no separate bathroom, the shower & the sink are in the bedroom. Silly lay out & no privacy at all. The bed was comfy though & really good quality bedding. Room hadn’t been cleaned properly, dirty & dusty. Even hair in the shower.

Booked for 2 nights as visiting family, I would
Say a pub with rooms, cheap accommodation, parking over the road in free car park.
Nice pub, bit rowdy but nice decor and cheap drinks.
Rooms nice and clean (just one massive cob web, high up on ceiling) some bits need improving like shower seal, black in places.
Breakfast room definitely needed a good clean, cereal on the floor in the same place two days running and breakfast very average with minimal choice.
