We stayed in the Castle Hotel to celebrate a few birthdays whilst down in West Wales. All staff were incredibly helpful and polite and explained the check in procedure and the use of the side door if we arrived back after they had shut for the night.

We were then showed our rooms and we had booked 1 twin room, 1 king sized double and 1 double. All rooms were clean and lovely. Fans had been placed in the rooms as we visited during a heat wave which was a really thoughtful gesture. complimentary drinks were left on the table for us to have also.

The bathrooms were nicely decorated and also clean with complimentary shampoo, conditioner and body wash.

Breakfast was lovely and the lady in charge was keen to make sure that everything was OK.

A fantastic stay and will definitely be back again.

So nice to see this hostelry coming to life again under new management and serving good food. Limited lunch menu but all freshly cooked and extremely reasonably priced. We especially enjoyed the home made coleslaw and recommend the vegetable and humus burger. We'll definitely be back on our next visit to Aberaeron.

Great location, with helpful staff on arrival. I like to stay in a pub but this one shuts by 8.30, there are other places to drink but makes it a bit like an Airbnb. The room was small, the bathroom was fine, the double bed was too small and had an awful mattress, and there was also an issue with road noise until I managed to shut the old sash windows loads of lorries. Just felt like the owners had lost a bit of interest in the business. So not that bad but far from great.

We arrived at the hotel late afternoon and after a short wait we were down to our room on the first floor. We immediately noticed a stale smell worsened by the warm weather and lack of ventilation in the room.

I went back to the bar area to ask how to open the room Windows and the manager came to our room and initially failed to open them but after a phone call they were open.

We noticed the headboard was thick with dust and showed manager who returned to clean it. We were given two free drinks as compensation.

Subsequently we noticed the toilet seat had dirty marks and did not fit properly. There were cobwebs on the light fittings resembling an episode of the Adam’s family and we found an old Jewellery bag of a previous guest in the drawer. We decided not to complain further and soon our holiday as it was already early evening.

We went to bed that night and found two hair pins in the bed!!

It’s a shame because it’s a great location and they have obviously spent money on creating a spacious room but on this occasion it was let down by staff.

Won’t be back.

After a coastal path hike to Aberaeron in foul weather I decided to make the Castle Hotel my destination for a meal and a pint. As I approached the entrance I could see a sign stating that the kitchen was closed. Now I understand how difficult it must be to be a smiling host seven days a week and everyone is entitled to an off day, but now and again I wonder why some people choose a life in the hospitality trade.

I called in to the local bakery then entered the pub doorway to ask if I could bring my pasty in to have with a pint. The landlord said yes, as long as I take my mess with me. Slightly surprised by his response I took it in good humour until, when walking away he added that he hated picking up other peoples mess. Maybe the sight of a wet coat and hiking boots, (clean), was not conducive to the type of clientele he wishes to attract. At that point I couldn’t quite see myself passing money over the bar and sitting down to enjoy a beer with such ‘charming’ company. I told him that I wasn’t too pleased at his comments and walked out leaving him with his two customers.

After my park bench lunch I called in at Zuko’s a few doors down for a coffee where I had a long interesting conversation with the proprietor. A gentleman who, although probably making no money on a pandemic troubled wet November day, was polite and a pleasure to chat with. I know where I’ll be headed next time.

I will start by saying this review could and should have been different.
It is a real shame after the really great and friendly service given by most of the staff and the lovely breakfast. All staff were really nice but....
We had a booking of 8 people at a cost of over £1000
In the family party was an 80+ year old lady and an a person with Motor Neurone.
On arrival we dropped two of the party outside while the rest went to park cars and carry the bags.
On arrival at the desk we were greeted by - "is she with you" in an unpleasant tone. Pointing to my mother.
Followed by further rudeness we were told to stand at another part of the bar to check in. Then shouted at for taking up space (the place was empty).
Not the welcome you want after a long drive but too late to walk out.
The next day we dropped the two members of the family at the tables outside the hotel while the cars were taken to the town carpark.
The same unpleasant woman came marching out and said they could not sit there. In the process really making them feel uncomfortable. They explained they were guests and waiting for the rest of the party. They got a lecture about taking up seats and losing them money!
We caught up and ordered drinks but got a really frosty face in return.

While there another large family group arrived and sat at a few of the empty tables. The Woman came out and gave them a lot of aggression because one and moved a chair.
They understandably got up and left. Comically, a lone woman drinking at another table piped up in a rough voice "You tell em Rachel"

Four other people who had been waiting to be served but ignored while she talked to friends also got up and left voicing their displeasure.

So our message to the great staff, apologies for the one star as your efforts were great. You are losing a lot of money and credibility at the hands of one hostile member of your team.
I fully expect Rachel to read this and make up excuses for her behaviour but the pattern of other reviews says it all.
Had it not been for the one person our review would have been 5 stars.
Prisoner Cell Block H springs to mind...

Response from David James, Owner at Castle Hotel
Responded 18 Sept 2021
Thank you for your review, but if you are going to leave a review, its best to give an honest one. On your arrival you were asked politely if the elderly lady and the gentleman were with you as when they were asked if anyone could help them, they couldn't answer. Due to our regulations ,people can't just walk in and stand where they like, also you were asked if you could move your luggage as you were all stood in front of the toilets. There may had not been anyone indoors but outside the tables were full and people need to use the facilities, not too much to ask ,I don't think. Unfortunately we do not provide a daycare centre for relatives left unattended while you go shopping. As for the table who moved the chair , they were told that they could move to a larger table to accommodate them and not sit and block the walkway, and frankly it's no business of yours who I talk to and who I serve. Actually you were rude , obnoxious and treated me and my staff with distain and the premises like daycare for your relatives. I don't make excuses for my behaviour , what about yours? Thank you once again for your review , our credibility and our financial status is fine. Rachel Humphrey

After walking round the wind swept harbour we thought it would be nice to call in and have some lunch and a drink. No sooner had we entered than a women came from behind us and snapped at us “you’ve got to sign the book “!which we were going to do. As she headed past she continued “You just can’t walk in you know “. Quick exit Having now looked at other reviews for the Castle, it seems that a bad attitude isn’t unusual, you’d think that in these difficult times businesses would be really welcoming. Not so The Castle.

We were excited to spend a weekend in Aberaeron and decided to stay at the boutique Castle Hotel. When we entered the bar we were met with an unfriendly atmosphere. A rather grumpy woman asked what we wanted and we explained we had rooms booked. She walked off. We assumed we had to follow her to reception, but there is no reception, only the bar. After being asked for our details in a brusque manner, we were given our keys and told that our rooms were upstairs and that the door separating the bar from the stairwell would be locked so we would not be able to enter the bar! The rooms were clean and comfortable, but with ill-fitting draughty windows. There was no check out-process so just left our keys in our rooms. We were glad that we had not booked breakfast and were very pleased to leave. A disappointing stay that could have been easily rectified by a change in attitude and a more friendly professional approach.

The new owners have not been there long and are doing a great job as there is a lot they want to do to make improvements in the future but for now, they are working very well with what they took on. Things may not be perfect yet but you get a very warm welcome by people who care and who do their best to help you out.
A great venue if you are doing the Coastal Path and with a supermarket next door, you can get your supplies for the next part of your journey.
I did not have dinner there but the breakfast is amazing. Vegetarians and vegans are well catered for.
Somewhere I would return to.

4 of us .
Just popped in for a pint and ended up having food . Between us we had 2 x welsh burgers and chips, chicken burger and chips, veggie burger and chips , they all came with the best coleslaw in mid wales , the quality of the burgers were spot on, fries were crispy on the outside and soft in the middle (lovely) . There’s a new owner who was very welcoming very friendly and accommodating .
Wish we weren’t driving as we’d have stayed for longer for the rugby.
A nice touch as there was a free raffle prize of a Fiji rugby shirt on offer .
All 4 of us have given a 5 star rating and we’d recommend to anyone wanted a pint and some food or to watch some sports to come here .

We will pop back next time we are here .
