Reviews summary
This summary was created by AI, based on recent reviews.
Powered by AI
Tre-Ysgawen Hall and Spa receives mixed feedback from guests, with many appreciating its serene and picturesque location on Anglesey, ideal for both relaxation and local exploration. The hotel's service and spa amenities, including the pool and jacuzzi, frequently earn praise for enhancing guest experiences.
However, some visitors feel the value is diminished by high costs and the need for refurbishments, particularly in the rooms and certain common areas that lack ambiance. While the hotel's cleanliness is generally celebrated, there are calls for more thorough attention in specific spots.

Detailed Reviews
Booked this through Secret Escapes so got a few extras like Afternoon Tea and a glass of Pimms, yet these couple of extras just added to what was already an amazing place to stay. The grounds are beautiful and the rooms large and well equipped. Our favourite room was the library, where we were given a delicious Afternoon Tea on our arrival and, after being out all day, spent many a happy hour relaxing in front of the fire. Breakfast was superb and very filling, and the Spa was a pleasure to visit, with all facilities being clean and well maintained. What really makes this place special however are the staff, every single one of them did their absolute utmost to make sure we had a lovely time. Nothing was too much trouble, and all my requests or questions were always answered politely and with a smile. It isn't a cheap place to visit, but for a special weekend away or for a special occasion, it is thoroughly recommended.

A beautiful place to stay, with lovely grounds to walk in. Our room was large with an extra large bed which was very comfortable and everywhere was spotlessly clean
We had doors which opened onto the patio , so lovely to sit in the sunshine enjoying the peace and quiet.
The pool and facilities were fantastic a great place to relax and enjoy !
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay especially the lovely cooked breakfast.
We have booked already to return in the near future.
We can only hope that they are able to open the main house again, as we would love to stay there, but until that happens it is still a fabulous place to stay.

I've given 5 stars because it's nearer to 5 than 4, but there were some negatives. We booked 1 night only at first, in view of some very negative reviews, but then extended to 3 nights. We had room 31, on the ground floor, as there is no lift and stairs are a problem for my wife. The room was quite large enough, with plenty of storage space. The only problem, common to so many hotels, was the clothes hangers that can't be removed. They're an absolute pain! I usually take spare hangers to deal with this problem but forgot. The staff did find half a dozen ordinary hangers for me. A French window opened onto a small terrace with table and chairs. The bathroom was quite attractive with double basin and bath. Regarding the bed, my wife found it comfortable but for me the mattress was too hard, but I used the spare quilt as a mattress topper and it was OK. The pillow problem however was not solved. It was too hard for me but staff were unable to find an alternative. This was quite disappointing. Even the smallest B&B usually has alternatives.
Breakfasts were good, and cooked included smoked salmon and scrambled eggs. I particularly liked the choice of Llaeth y Llan yoghurt with choices such as gooseberry and bilberry.
Evening meals were less satisfactory. We ate there for our first night and found as others have noted, that it was overpriced and portion sizes quite small.
We used the pool twice. It's very pleasant but not quite as warm as we would have liked. The jacuzzi was very good and could comfortably accommodate 6.
Some reviewers have considered the interior old fashioned. For me this is much preferable to the over-restored interiors that one finds in some hotel such as some of the Spanish Paradores. Similarly we had no noise disturbance from any work being carried out. Regarding wi-fi, we had no problem with lap-top - good enough to live-stream football. Using wi-fi via mobile was a problem at first but then Christine tweeked it and it was fine. Mostly there was no mobile phone signal.
As other reviewers have noted all the staff were friendly and helpful. Particular thanks to 2 of them, Christine on reception for help with the booking before we arrived, and help after arrival ( ac yn dda i gael y cyfle i siarad yr iaith efo hi!) and Bhakti who served us so attentively at breakfast.

We booked this hotel through red letter days in May 2021 had a confirmation for our stay which was for 30th July - this was for my husbands 60th birthday.
Less than a week before arrival I emailed the hotel to request a garden room and was surprised to receive an email back saying the hotel was closed until August and thank goodness I'd contacted them as they were worried we'd turn up to a closed hotel! Yes that's exactly what would have happened had I not contacted them.
The response from the hotel was they had no contact details for us and were very unsympathetic that we were 5 days away from our stay in school holidays with no chance of getting any other accommodation on Anglesey at that stage.
I understand that sometimes things happen that may be beyond their control however it's how you put things right and to my mind this hotel have done nothing to try and rectify customer disappointment at a last minute cancelled holiday and were very dismissive of our situation.
Red letter days have refunded our voucher and the additional £263 extra that we paid to stay at that hotel but the service from the tre ysgowen Hall Hotel has been shocking.

Response from Neil Rowlands, General Manager at Tre-Ysgawen Hall and Spa
Responded 26 Aug 2021
Thank you for taking the time to write your review. As mentioned in correspondence with yourselves we had made many attempts to contact you regarding your future stay with us. Unfortunately the details given by the agency you booked through were not correct so we had no way of contacting you, until you contacted us. And yes thank goodness you did! We even emailed and tried contacting the agency several times so that they could pass on the information to you (which by the way we have never had any dealings with Red Letter Days in the past), hoping they would have your correct contact details, but to no avail. We did everything in our power to make you aware that the hotel was closed and would not be re-opening until restrictions in Wales were lifted. As we said many times throughout our communication we were very sorry, and still are, but the restrictions imposed by the Welsh Government were not our fault, we just followed guidance and opened the hotel when it was safe to do so for our team, and for our customers.

Booked a 3 night stay for a birthday present and we were both very disappointed as the economies being made here significantly downgrade it from a 4* hotel experience. Staff were very friendly but we found dirty cutlery and crockery in both the dining room and our room. We did not use the dusty kettle even when feeling very cold having used the chilly swimming pool. Breakfast consisted of packeted sugared cereals, highly processed fruit yoghurt pots, zingy tasting fruit salad, cheap juices and a very restricted cooked menu. No natural yoghurt, grains, nuts and seeds offered by 4* hotels. There were only croissants available on 2 mornings. I was grateful to the chef cooking plain porridge on request. The beds were clean and comfortable and bathroom ok apart from a very mouldy seal at one end. The grounds could be a real feature but the rhododendrons had overtaken and there was no planting to enhance biodiversity which is something other grand houses are actively doing. We did not see red squirrels and there were very few birds. Planting native cyclamen and naturalising plants would be cost effective as they do not need replanting and keep flowering. The grounds could be a real enhancement and draw for guests to visit. We booked one dinner but the dining room was unable to cope with the guests already waiting despite its limited mostly curries menu. It was understaffed putting current staff under undue pressure. We gave dinner a miss as food would arrive too late at night. Given the location and the size of the grounds, this could be a fabulous place to stay, but the owners need to address the quality of experience they are offering their current guests if they want it to stay a 4* hotel, rather than concentrating on development of the old building.

If you are after a secluded venue with no views then this place could be what your looking for. Firstly the staff are great all very nice. We stayed on Valentines night 14th Feb 2020. Our room was not very romantic or private (No19) we were near the front door and overlooking the car park area. So curtains had to be closed for any privacy. The room, cup ring stains on the furniture and windowsills, large damp patch above window a half circle about a 16" diameter. No shower mat in the shower, kettle was the cheapest of the cheap very tacky. It is a noisy hotel so if you want a good nights sleep ear plugs are a must. The bed is very comfortable and large so very nice. Bathroom towels are also great, Thank you. In the room there were two welcome handbooks, these were minging! Very very dirty had not been wiped in a long time and the information papers inside also very tired and need renewing. While we were there we enjoyed the swimming pool on site. The changing rooms reminded me of my old schools changing rooms again tired and scruffy. The swimming pool area itself also looked unkempt. Paint pealing off the ceilings, the metal loungers were well battered and paint chipping off them. The wicker seating was also the cheapest of the cheap. £200 sets, again poor. On the ceiling where the extractor fans were, well again can't be healthy, the areas around these fans were dirty mouldy and looked grimy. Not what was expected of such an establishment. We dined during the evening as it

We went for a couple of nights and overall the stay was nice. I'll start with the good points, the first being that the reception staff were incredibly lovely! The room was also ok, if a little dated but it is an old house so that was expected. We had a double room - it had a good sized and comfortable bed, a small tv, tea and coffee making facilities and an ensuite with shower in the bath (shower was hot, so all good!). The lighting is quite poor in the room and by the mirrors though, so putting makeup on was a leap of faith. The room was a little cold so we had the heat right up, and there is not much in the way of soundproofing (to be expected in the style of building). It had that odd mushroomy smell at first but we did air it out a bit on first arrival so that helped. Breakfast was fine - a choice of "small box" cereal, yoghurt and fruit, croissants, toast, good coffee and a hot breakfast choice. We didn't stay at the hotel for an evening meal as the menu didn't look very good. There are lovely restaurants around though, we had a nice meal at Dylan's (Menai bridge). The spa was quite nice with gym, a good sized pool (although cold) and a steam bath and sauna. Robes provided and a fresh towel at each use. I noticed some had slippers provided but we didn't have these. The hotel is undergoing some work so there were a few disruptions, for example, the bar is being used as the dining room as the new dining room is being constructed. The drinks at the bar are extortionate (2 drinks were £20 - which may seem fine for those in London, but we are from "up north" so that was a shock).
Overall we did have a nice stay and got out to see as much of Angelsey as we could. We would have loved to have gone through the Hall gardens, but it was very wet...maybe next time.

Booked afternoon tea here for my Mum’s 70th birthday celebration. 20 of us had a beautiful afternoon tea which included sandwiches, sausage rolls, pork pies and various cakes and scones with jam and cream. The tea and coffee was hot and we had plenty of it. The service was good and there were enough staff on to take care of us. Special thanks to Tracey Williams on reception for helping me organise it and taking care of everything 😀

Having previously stayed here we decided to return post covid, staying 2 nights on a B&B basis. Initially a few issues with accommodation which were expertly resolved in a most satisfactory manner by Ashley who runs this establishment to the point where we were invited to the Spa members barbecue run by Ashley and his brother which was a lovely unexpected gesture on their part.
The pool and spa are excellent facilities which enhance your stay.
Breakfast was excellent too with locally sourced produce and plenty of choice including the hearty Welsh breakfast.
All in all a terrically peaceful idyllic base to explore the island and its coastline, beaches, towns, villages and ancient monuments.
Cannot heap enough praise on this hotel and more importantly its people - a place where staff do "go the extra mile" Thank you

My boyfriend treated us to a stay here for my 25th!
What a gorgeous hotel and spa! Although the restaurant was not open for dinner, the team were helpful in calling us a taxi to a local town and advising the best restaurants and pubs.
Our welcome was second to none and Christine was fabulous and attentive to show us around and inform us of all the hotel details.
A massive shoutout to Sharon who made the stay so memorable for us, she could not do enough and made my birthday and our weekend so great - the rooms were gorgeous and we even returned to swans out of towels and rose petals on the bed after a day out, it was such a lovely touch!
The spa was better than expected and was so well presented with clean facilties.
The team could not do enough for you, it really was a lovely stay after a weekend camping to go and stay in the hotel.
