Detailed Reviews
We stopped at this beautiful inn late afternoon after a lovely return walk to Gwyrne Fawr reservoir. The inn was quiet when we arrived, but we noticed that all of the tables were reserved for that evening.
We had a coke, 2 x pints of Stowford Berries and just two portions of chips which came to £18.50, which we thought was quite expensive.
There were leaflets at the bar outlining the amazing historical importance of the inn, which was fascinating reading, and it was easy to imagine this inn as the hub of activity at the base of the Skittid mountain in days gone past.
details were taken for track and trace, and tables were spaced appropriately outside where we sat.
Staff were pleasant and helpful. a lovely stop after a long and muddy walk in our damp Welsh weather.

What an amazing weekend I have just had at the Skirrid Inn, the landlords Geoff and Sharon were very welcoming and accommodating, the staff were lovely also. Stayed in one of the rooms for two nights which are big and it does the job, slept like a baby!! Full cooked breakfast is lovely, Wales are still in a partial lockdown so the full menu was not on offer, but Geoff was so apologetic( not his fault ) that he couldn’t give us the full service he would normally, but his hospitality certainly made up for it. Can’t wait to go back.

My husband & I were passing through the area and visited the Skirrid Inn for an impromptu Valentine's Day lunch. I had wanted to visit for one of their Haunted Ghost Hunt evenings for a very long time (and will do in the very near future).
I am in love with the history and architecture of the Skirrid Inn. I especially respect and appreciate how successive owners have strived to maintain the original structure and integrity of the building in all of its 12th Century glory.
The food was traditional independent pub fare with a nod to the local area; my husband had the Welsh Beef curry, and I had the leek/Pork sausages and mash. Large, hearty portions at very reasonable prices. Service was speedy and with a smile. I sat by the roaring open fire envisioning what it would have been like to drink at the Skirrid Inn back in its early glory days. If I ever win the lottery, I will happily make the owners an offer they can't refuse 😉

Website sounded interesting, spooky goings on, oldest pub in Wales etc so thought would be worth a visit and meal. Surroundings were certainly old, lots of old stone and wooden beams, could imagine it may be creepy at night. The menu was quite varied, I had ham, egg and chips, with salad garnish. The ham was thick and what I would call proper ham. My partner chose sausage and mash, which consisted of a huge lump of mashed potato, with 3 sausages, which were overcooked and a small jug of gravy, costing almost £10. Think this was a bit overpriced.

We went for an evening meal. This was average pub food. But the evening was totally marred by the lack of social distancing. Food and drinks were ordered at the bar, at which there was noattempt to create or enforce social distancing. People were on top of each other. Our table was sufficiently away from the next one in use, but on the direct route to the gents toilet, which seemed to be in much demand. The landlady appeared to be behind the bar, and made no effort to control matters. The list for completion by customers present was in the porch area, and only signed by a few people. The landlady was not in a position to check, and did not do so, or even ask customers if they had signed.

We ordered the fish and chips. It was served with a small side of both salad and a large helping of peas and a large helping of tartare sauce. It was nice with a crisp batter and white fish not the grey pulp reconstituted fish that some pubs chips serve. Reputed to be the oldest pub in Wales and I can well believe it. As soon as you enter treading over cobblestone you are faced with a door carbon dated door of about 500 years. It was frequented by Judge Jeffries known as the hanging judge and indeed there is a rope running from the upper to the lower floor ending with a noose and the atmosphere was appropriate to the age of the pub my medium colleagues and I sensed a couple of spots of activities but I wish we had more time to investigate properly.

My husband and I visited for a meal whilst on holiday. As we had our dog with us we ate in the back room.
The good points first. Well, think there's only one really and that was the price. Two meals and two drinks (one glass of wine and a soft drink) came to £28.50. Not bad but glad we hadn't paid any more.
On to the not so good points. Considering it's the oldest pub in Wales, it did not have a particularly good atmosphere. Old beams and deep windowsills maybe, but it felt more like an ordinary old fashioned back street pub. Gaudy patterned carpet, sticky wooden tables, bottle of Sarson's. Small plastic laminated menu on which none of the dishes sounded particularly appealing. My husband went for the chicken, ham and leek pie with chips and I ordered a vegetable taglne with rice. Unfortunately I was informed a few minutes later that they didn't have any tagine so I chose the chicken in a pepper and whiskey sauce with new potatoes. When the food arrived it didn't look very appetising. My husband's pie was ok but the chips could have been hotter and there were only about a teaspoonful of peas. My chicken was a bit dry although the sauce was ok but the new potatoes were only just cooked and pretty tasteless. Presentation left a lot to be desired. The guy who served us didn't smile once or engage in pleasantries. All a bit disappointing.
Needless to say we won't be making a return visit.

We stayed at the Skirrid Mountain Inn Friday 29/04/2022 and I cannot speak highly enough about this place. Ever since I saw this Inn on a paranormal programme I have wanted to spend a night here, so when I contacted the Inn and was told they were fully booked my heart sunk, but the staff went out of their way to fit us in on Friday. We had dinner in front of the old fireplace which was amazing. I ordered the beef curry and my partner had the steak & ale pie and we were impressed with both meals. If you want to go just for a meal I would suggest booking a table as this Inn gets very busy. As for having a paranormal experience, I was let down but that is what I get for sleeping with earplugs in my partner heard a baby crying outside our room's door but there was no one there, when we arrived we checked the room and the cupboard doors were closed, but when we got back from dinner the doors had been pushed in (strange as we never touched the cupboard). We woke up to a fabulous full english breakfast. All in all, I think this place is fantastic, the building is steeped in history and the area is picturesque. The staff are amazing and the food is great

Stayed here recently, and it was great to visit the place and finally see it for ourselves.
Landladies and staff were pleasant, welcoming, and really accommodating. They ensured that we had everything we needed.
We stayed in room 2, the room is huge!
You really get the sense of just how old the building is, so pleased we came.
We had a pleasant evening meal, drinks, and a cooked breakfast the following morning - prices all very reasonable.
Will definitely look forward to returning :)

A lovely family meal, really warm welcome from the staff. They were really helpful and friendly with our little ones, providing colouring paper and pens on request and even cooking our meal before the advertised 6pm start of service.
An amazing building filled with history.
Plenty of few parking in car park behind the pub and a lovely looking beer garden too!
Food was very tasty and plenty of ales on tap!

Hi
They will take bookings over the phone, their number is on their website. Hope that helps.
They have guest rooms that you can book
Sorry, but I only had lunch, but I do know a few friends who have booked all three rooms. Just give the Skirrid a call - they are exceptionally helpful.
Hi,
I would assume accommodation is based on two factors :-
Budget & Accomodation access at 04:00am
Top end of budget........ you could try The Angel located in the center of nearby Abergavenny as I would assume they have a 24hr reception etc.
Or
The recently build Premier Inn situated off The Heads of The Valleys road on the outskirts of Abergavenny.
I would suggest that both hotels are an approximate 15 min drive from the Skirrid Inn.
Hope these suggestions help?
Hi, yes there is parking along the road just outside the pub!
