I can’t speak highly enough of this place and the kindness of the family who run it. My wife and I were driving to Pembrokshire to see the puffins on Skomer Island, when we popped a tire on our rental car. Lucky for us we were not far from Slate Mill Lodge, and let me just say WOW! The husband and wife who run the lodge came straight to our rescue. They drove us to the dock so we wouldn’t miss our boat, unfortunately rough seas cancelled the tour. But they took us back to the lodge and helped us with the tire repair and got us back on the road in practically no time, all out of the goodness of their hearts. Good Samaritans are still among us, and these wonderful people are living proof!

We stayed in the Gann cottage and it was lovely, everything was there to make our stay wonderful. The owners were great and helpful, great value for money.
If you are planning a trip to this area I couldn’t recommend it more.
The lovely town of Dale is only a short drive away where you can get some good fishing.

As some others have mentioned, David is really a great host and is a lot of fun to talk to! The vegetarian dinner that we had was innovative and great - although it certainly is very expensive! Since we were only staying the one night we went ahead anyway rather than driving to Marloes / Haverford West. For Skomer we took our own lunch (from Tesco) but some of the others who stayed did ask David to prepare a packed lunch as well so there is that option.

Rooms are on the small side but to be honest were perfectly fine for a night. Overall, a great place to stay for a short break - although it is on the expensive side. It is in a great location for going to Skomer so certainly recommended for short breaks.

Don’t be fooled by first appearances – this is a CHEAP place! The initial impression was of a quality, welcoming home. How wrong we were! Mouldy shower curtain and room blind, broken lamp shade (see photos), patched bathroom, cheap polycotton bed linen and a bed that was so uncomfortable it felt like it had been in student digs for at least 20 years! The springs were so bad that we hardly slept at all the first night! Incredibly unpleasant owner, Jane (so why do this job??), simply did not care about this and REFUSED to give us fresh towels though we were staying 3 days (and ours had been wet on the bathroom floor all day) and was unbelievably rude in public in front of other guests when asked. David, on the other hand, is lovely and welcoming and provided an excellent breakfast. The rest of the staff were very pleasant too. This SHOULD have been a wonderful place and is in a great location but with the current attitude, just try the loads of other local B and B’s. We checked out a day early and will never return to this pretentious dump.

We stayed for two nights with David and enjoyed the clean room and good shower, but we did not like the food. We were on a walking tour so we had to be picked up which worked out fine, but the lodge is not near any other establishment so your choices for eating are limited to only there. When we arrived, I asked what was for dinner. He said it was a surprise. I should have spoken up then and insisted on knowing but based on previous reviews, I expected sea food or some other common food cooked in an unusual or gourmet way. What we got was chicken liver pâté and leg of lamb, neither of which we eat. We paid 20 pounds for homemade bread, salad, one ear of corn, potatoes grown locally, and a delicious strawberry torte. It was really a rip off. If he had told me what he was serving, I could have said that we'd eat a vegetarian dinner which he was preparing for three other guests, but I never had the chance to change. It was a ripoff. I will tell you that two of the British couples having dinner with us dug right in and enjoyed it but we just don't like that food. The next night we ate in Marloes before David picked us up because we didn't want to spend so much money but we had to order our lunch for the next day of walking, again because we had no other choice. I told him three times that we wanted a vegetarian sandwich but we were packed a sandwich of unidentifiable meat, a bag of chips, an over ripe pear and a small KitKat bar with no drink for 6.50 pounds. Way overpriced... David does what David want - he is a fun person to talk to and we enjoyed seeing his place and hearing his vision for the future...but he needs to do a better job of anticipating the wants of his guests. We don't know what the cost of the room is because we paid for a package through the walking tour company so I can't comment on the value, but I can tell you the 20 pound dinner is overpriced. When we go out to dinner at home and spend the equivalent of $60, we eat filet or sea food and usually have a glass of wine for that price. I think that we would have been better off if we'd been booked into a village B&B like we were in St. David's or Dale. At least we had choices in both of these places.

Probably one of the more difficult reviews I have written.
Negative
Room was small, cramped and needed a deep clean.
Packed lunch £8.50 for a sandwich, kitkat and a bag of crisps.
Charged £5 corkage for the use of wine glasses.
Building work outside the room
Postive
Great host good local knowledge and knows the people that run Skomer Island Boat trips
Unbelievably great communal meal of home cured gravadlax, chicken liver pate, slow cooked leg of lamb that fell of the bone and a great pear crumble. AT £20 head!!!! Fantastic value, take advantage of this if you get the chance.
Lovely breakfast cooked to order using local ingredients.

So in summary an average overall experience, in some areas penny pinching but in others very generous.

I emailed SML in April to book a room for 3 nights in July. I was offered the Gann apartment as "the Mill rooms were quite small and the Musselwick rooms were booked". I took the apartment on a B&B basis at £80 pn, sent off my deposit of £120. They acknowledged it by email and banked it that same day.
We were staying 8th-10th July, I emailed a few days before to advise arrival time and that we were looking forward to the stay in the apartment.
We drove from Cardiff down to the area and spent some time walking the coast path. Quite tired we turned up at 4pm to check in. A young girl, quite pleasant but with little English showed us to room 7, a very small Mill Room! I explained we were booked into the Gann apartment and she showed me the diary, with various amended entries and us in M7!
We waited in the lounge until the owner turned up a little later. He was apologetic and told us not to panic, he would look after us - the overbooking had come about because his Polish manager had doubled booked a number of people and had gone off on holiday and he had sacked her! Apparently he had a room triple booked for Saturday night (10th July)!!!
When asked why he had not contacted us, especially as I had emailed a few days previously he had nothing to say other than to suggest we stay and he would cook us a meal "gratis". I explained we had booked and expected the Gann apartment, paid £120 several months previously and this was not good enough. We decided to leave, took a cheque from him for the deposit and drove 2 1/2 hrs home.
This man made no effort to advise us of the problem! He let us prepare for our break, drive down, and then seem to hope that the offer of a free meal was recompense for putting us in the smallest room possible. The fact that we left and drove home shows our contempt for his attitude, I would not spend a single penny on his premises, he does not deserve to be in business if this is how he treats people. I feel very sorry for those treble booked and fully understand the previous poor review from someone who was messed around - at least they were advised beforehand.
If you have to book with this person then don't pay the full deposit, get it in writing exactly what room you will be in, phone before hand -anything to avoid being dumped somewhere you don't want to be.
An inefficient and callous attitude - those who have given good reviews must have won the lottery - we certainly didn't.

This holiday accommodation nestling in beautiful rural Pembrokeshire in Wales is a little gem.
The two bedroom apartment was immaculately clean, comfortable and well equipped.
The welcome pack of basics was generous and even included biscuits for your pooch! The kitchen and bathroom were modern and the sitting room thoughtfully planned. Our hosts and owners were charming, friendly but unobtrusive.
The accommodation is close to beautiful beaches, boating activities, bird-watching sites and as an area, a walker's paradise. It is great for ecologists and botanists too.
We thoroughly enjoyed our time at Slate Mill and hope to return on our next trip to the UK.

The Campsite at Slate Mill. A wonderful 'vision'....But a wonderful vision that needs focus and a lot more work. The vision behind the campsite is one that has nature and eco-friendliness in mind...At least, that was the impression we got. No bad ambition in our view but unfortunately, the ambition is just that, an ambition. The site's pitches are separated by wannabe 'natural' hedges that encourage wild life. No problems with that idea whatsoever...However, every plant in the 'hedges' around our pitch either had thorns or stung....Not ideal for those wearing anything other than jungle clothing. I had to 'prune' the hedge behind our tent to prevent it from shredding our tent in the wind...(not all the pitches suffer the same it must be said)....Pitching your tent...Oh dear. You cannot just 'park up' and pitch next to your car if your pitch is on the 'West Bank' as we called our pitch. If you have to cross the bridge over little stream to pitch up...Prepare to do some serious lugging through twisty, nettle strewn, tracks.

The entrance/exit to and from the campsite is, to say the least, 'dodgy'....Entering isn't too bad but exiting is very hazardous as the exit is very close to a blind bend in the road and whilst the road isn't the M25, it isn't deserted either!

Campers are encouraged to have camp fires! Top job!! I love a camp fire and wood is provided 'Free'!! ...Oh dear, I left my chain saw at home....Because you really needed to be a lumber jack to cut up the balks of wood on offer....I could have made a small coffee table out of some of the offerings...So I exaggerate a bit but you get my drift. My small hand axe was not up to the job.

Facilities....Showers, loos etc. Hmmmm. Being or trying to be 'eco' comes at a price...a price our hosts were rather evasive about. The showers were 'solar' heated.....Wales isn't Dubai or Bahrain. This meant some cold showers...Our hosts were very 'evasive' about this state of affairs which annoyed us ...If they'd said from the off that the showers were solar, we'd have been happy with that.....But, feeds of rubbish about swallows nests and 'Welsh Water Company' and 'not knowing' about the heating...It really didn't go down very well....That and four loos and four showers (two for men and two for women) really was, in our opinion, a bit optimistic, given the number of people on the site.

A fab' little shed with a fridge and a fridge freezer and a couple of power points to charge up your gizmos was good and free!!

Over all....Slate Mill Campsite...It will be the best campsite....If the 'vision' comes off. Long weekend, young and tough, fill your boots!! Go for it..Brilliant....If not, well, consider your options.

Great location for a trip to Skomer. Very good standard of accommodation in a quite and peaceful environment. We were made to feel very welcome and the owners are great hosts.

I booked a twin room for £90. The twin room was already occupied so we were given a double room each, and here's the sting, we were then told to pay for single occupancy in the double room. I should have refused, but didn't want to get kicked out at 10pm to find alternative accommodation. There was no notification before hand, and if they double booked they should waive the charges. Very underhand and appears rather money grabbing.

If you're staying here in a twin room, double check before hand that they're not going to charge you extra.
