We stayed here during the covid 19 restrictions. There were signs up to wear masks in communal areas and social distancing signs and hand sanatiser available. (we didn't see anyone wearing a mask) Towels were swapped by taking dirty ones down to reception and popping them in container then handed fresh ones.

The the staff were happy and friendly and very informative.

There is plenty of parking and has a harvester next door which is handy and we took advantage of.

We used this as a base to explore the surrounding areas.

We had a family room which was spacious and plenty of storage room. The rooms were clean and tidy. They are just in desperate need of re vamping as looking very dated and little things like rust around taps, marks and stains on walls etc. The temperature on the shower was jammed so took us a while to try and change it as too hot.

We stayed during the heat wave and the heat was horrendous even using the fan provided on the whole visit and both widows open. Which may not be the same for all guests.

The price of the hotel was good value for money and in a great location. A few changes could really help improve the ratings given.

We stayed several times over the space of two weeks due to visiting Porthcawl. Stayed in several rooms on both floors.

Staff
Ladies at check in and throughout both stays were really friendly and helpful. Best part of this hotel. One even offered to move a family member so they could be in a room on the top floor closer to us.
Hotel
Overall OK, TL is very basic but that's as we expected. Hotel does look abit tired in places.
Room
It was a cheap room and that's what we got. I forgot how basic TL was but it did the job and the bed was comfy. The carpets and bathroom could really do with being changed. Our first room, no9 ground floor had a few stains and black marks and didn't look great, certainly didn't want to walk on the carpet without something on your feet. Upstairs room was better as you don't have anyone above and the sound proofing isn't great.
Location
Just behind a harvester and 5 minutes off the m4. We used it when visiting Porthcawl as its just over 15 mins away. There is closer hotels but for the price you can't beat it. Also very quiet around hotel being quite rural.

I stay away a lot because of my work and when I’m the area, this is my preferred bolt hole.
The rooms are always spotless, beds are comfy and whilst being within easy access of the motorway, it is a quiet, peaceful haven.
Dianne, who usually checks me in, always greets me with a smile and a friendly word. Things like that are important when you travel and work alone much of the time. She runs a “tight ship” and her sunny disposition can brighten up the gloomiest day. Travelodge, I hope you realise how much of an asset this member of staff is?
This is not based on a “one off” visit as I have stayed here a lot of the past year.

We are a family of 4 (2 adults and 2 children).

I’ll start with the positives. The staff were lovely, very friendly and helpful. I was also pleased that the children’s beds were good quality ‘pull out’ beds and were comfy. Bedlinen in the room was clean and bed was comfortable.

Hospitality tray was very basic (tea/coffee and sugar sachets and long life milk) but adequate.

Breakfast box (at an additional cost of £5.50 each) was fun and served a function.

We’re were disappointed by the general cleanliness of the room. It was very dated and there was carpet peeling, dirty/ ripped shower curtain and general grime.

The worst things were:

A). Bathroom was dirty. No window meant that the whole room got hot and stuffy when the first person had a shower. 4 people in and the whole room was like a sauna (window locks meant the only small window in main room could only open a couple of cm). Dirty carpets, floor Unclean. Minuscule bin.

B). Due to ventilation issues (described above). The whole room is damp- all of the time. Even clean clothes left in the room will smell damp and require rewashing.

C). They don’t service the room as routine. We stayed for 3 nights and had to ask for (poor quality) toilet roll 4 times. It’s embarrassing having to ask for toilet roll and inconvenient/ unpleasant trying to limit the amount that you use. Dirty/ rusty lift top bin/ too tiny to leave even a coke can.

Visit the area 3/4 times a year but always frequent the rival hotel chain. It’s been 10 years or so since we’ve stepped foot inside a Travelodge simply because we feel it can’t compare to the alternative. However this was our first visit with a DOG! We needed to visit family and this was the only hotel in the vicinity that allowed dogs so with limited alternative choice, we set our expectations low.

However I am pleased to say we had a pleasant stay and would not hesitate to recommend it. Yes it’s old and dated and in dire need of a refurb BUT it’s clean and the bed is new and comfortable. Most people there seemed to have dogs but you didn’t hear anything between rooms.

My only slight gripe was the water never got hot enough for how I like my showers, hint it wasn’t cold by any means. I would have mentioned it on check out but the front desk was unmanned and it was trivial. It would be nice if a hot breakfast was offered at the nearby Harvester but probably not profitable due to the potential volume.

All in all - you get what you pay for and with excellent service from the staff we bumped into / went to with queries, we’d definitely stay there again.

We stayed at this travelodge recently and were really impressed by the staff there.
I spoke to ANGELA a number of times beforehand to sort out a few queries and we couldn’t believe the extent to which she went, to help us.
She is an absolute joy, a very caring person and a great asset to the company. THANK YOU ANGELA.
The cost of staying at this travelodge was also a bonus, it’s great value for money.

Basic but clean, staff really friendly , I think I came across Sara and Laura while there. staff seem to be always on the go. Even though reception is closed 10am they were always around attending to guests or room cleaning. Nothing was to much trouble for them .

Hotel needs to have a freshen up but comfortable stay.

Ignore all the negative reviews... this is a Travelodge, not the Hilton.

It's clean spacious and the staff are friendly and always around, perfect when you just want a bed for the night.

You get the basics, TV, desk and chair, tea and coffee facilities, towels etc. Even a couple of extra pillows in the wardrobe. A fan was supplied in the room as well (it's a Travelodge, so no aircon). There's no phone in the room to ring reception, which I think is a necessity

The room has a pull-out bed under the main bed (could be a double, I didn't pull it out). Room could do with a couple of extra plug sockets (especially by the bed for phone charging).

Ample parking (although only one disabled bay). The hotel is located behind the attached Harvester, and isn't obvious how to get to it. The access road could do with resurfacing as it's got some pretty impressive potholes so be careful.

If you have mobility issues TELL THEM IN ADVANCE there are two floors and no lifts.

Breakfast is via the Harvester next door, and isn't included. But the Harvester does a very good breakfast until 11:30.

Nice to have such a late checkout (midday).

The hotel is dog friendly (at an extra fee of £20 per stay)

We have waited several months to receive a reply from Travelodge about our disappointing 4 night stay in Pencoed in April. (This is in spite of reminders!) Whilst the staff were very good and helpful, they have their work cut out dealing with all the customer complaints! We ordered and paid for our breakfasts, but on two occasions there were no staff at reception, so we were unable to collect our breakfasts, so are due a refund. I have included photos of a broken bedroom window latch and broken bathroom door hook and toilet roll holder. The room was very 'tired' and the carpet was very faded and discoloured. Outside our window, the roof was littered with discarded cigarette ends, which had obviously been there for months. On our last night, on our way back to our room after dinner, we experienced a very strong smell of cannabis in the car park. We had to close our bedroom window, so the awful smell didn't come in to our bedroom. I would not recommend Travelodge to anyone and would definitely not stay in a Travelodge hotel in the future. It's a great pity, because we travel to Wales every few weeks to visit family.

We use this very occasionally and reluctantly, as it is near family, when there is no room at other hotels. This hotel seems to be stuck in the past. It needs a facelift of the building. The rooms need refreshing as well. Room door didn't have any means to lock it from the inside. Beds uncomfortable, only one chair per bedroom that could accommodate three guests, sadly smell of stale cigarette smoke in main corridor. No sound insulation from the room above. Only one disabled parking space. Kitchen staff from adjacent Harvester Inn gather near the hotel for a smoke. On the plus side the rooms are cheap if low demand and at least the kettle actually fits under the bathroom sink tap and there is no noise from the M4.
