Many of the restaurants do not accept credit cards. While they are widely accepted in PV, not so much in the smaller towns. The prices though are very reasonable. In many cases 1/3 the price of PV. We use cash, as the bank in La Penita cashes travelers cheques and there are a number of instant tellers, though their charges vary as does the amount they allow you to take out.
