Set on the Coast to Coast path in North Yorkshire, The Buck Inn is the perfect location to explore the surrounding area.

Wolfgang and Helen, the owners, provide value for money accomodation, that is clean and comfortable, suitable for those looking for either a peaceful night after a long day of walking, or a cosy night away for two.

All rooms are ensuite. For those looking to not venture out, enjoy the ambience of the Inn. They provide a good selection of locally sourced food that is both tasty and hearty and a wide selection of drinks.

Not hard to see why people choose to return here again and again. Thank you for a wonderful stay.

This is a real gem of a pub! As the owner is German there is a good selection of German food and beers to sample. The food was amazing and plentiful and the German beer went down a little too well!
A very hospitable landlord made us welcome and was very easy to chat to.
The room was clean and comfortable and they have drying facilities for walkers.
The pub is ideally placed for the C2C/ Cleveland way walking routes and the owners will collect you from Clay Bank to save your legs. We look forward to staying again next year when we walk the latter. Thank you for a lovely stay.

The Buck Inn is a fusion of British and German influences. It was the first time I've seen a Barnsley Lamb chop sharing the menu with maultaschen (a type of ravioli). The room was very comfortable, the food was delicious and the portions generous. Wolfgang and the team run a superb, relaxing establishment. If you're on the Coast to Coast walk the pick up and drop off at Clay Bank Top is a bonus.

Like other reviewers have already said, it is expensive for what you get. Whilst the room was clean, the bedding was poor quality and the hospitality tray was meagre - a packet of biscuits and a thermos of fresh milk would not go amiss.
The towels in the shower room were clean but well used and the loo roll one ply. A few more toiletries to keep the lone miniature shower gel company would be good. I paid £95 for one night single occupancy, this included breakfast. There was a choice of 2 cereals, orange juice, tea or coffee. Then you could have a full English followed by toast and jam/ marmalade. Porridge was also on offer. This needed to be ordered the night before. I had an evening meal which was good! I know hospitality has been hit hard with COVID and it can’t be easy running a country inn but it could be so much better!

We camped at the Buck Inn on the Coast to coast walk. We paid for drinks and dinner and breakfast.
The camping field had been cut but there were grass cuttings everywhere that stuck to all our stuff.
The shower and toilet facilities for campers were not acceptable: dirty, no hooks, no shelves, no toilet paper, broken shower-head holder.
There was an overall lack of pride and maintenance about the place.
Our main disappointment was the way we were spoken to by the staff. Other walkers were offered a lift to the trail head. When we enquired about the service we were told it was just for residents (we thought we were!) I am not a chauffeur was the rebuff. At 9.30pm the campers were curtly told to pay up and vacate the inn. Only residents were allowed to remain in the building.
We were left with the distinct impression that backpackers were not welcome

I feel sad to post this review as the owner seems very bitter and depressed about the state of the country and probably should retire and find happiness. But I feel duty bound to advise potential guests of the state of the rooms which is not reflected in the high prices (£120 double room B&B). Everything very tired and worn out, mouldy grouting in the bathroom and on the shower fixtures in our first room and when we mentioned this and were given a different room with a cleaner bathroom we had to contend with the smell of blocked drains. Still chipped mugs and very old bedlinen and towels. Only 2 teabags, no biscuits and a very basic low quality continental breakfast though the fried breakfast looked OK.
I'd have paid £60 and felt less ripped off.
Worst room and breakfast on our coast to coast walk and by far the most expensive.
Evening meals interesting, very meaty but expensive.

This was our first visit just for a drink and will be our last.
After driving 10 miles to meet others from further North we found the reception from a solitary barman was decidedly frosty. We were made to feel unwelcome and initially we could not find anywhere to sit. We would have had to sit separately had it not been for a couple of guests who saw our predicament and voluntarily moved with no assistance from the only member of staff.

We were aware the hotel closed at 9.30pm and we had almost finished our drinks when at bang on 9.30pm the barman came across to collect the glasses and advising us in no uncertain terms that he was only paid till 9.30pm and in effect he was now working for free and then said astoundingly 'in essence it's time you all p.....ed off!'

Not very impressive customer service!
Hardly the warm welcome that Yorkshire normally offers!

So, someone wrote that they paid 60 for a room with two, this has clearly doubled in price. The value for £60 was I should imagine was excellent. Try paying twice that and to be honest value was not good.
I agree the showers were good, the rest was, in my opinion poor overall.
Dinner was paid separately and was large in portions and good on flavour.
Personally I think the owner should stay in the kitchen where his strengths lay.
Putting down England and the English people is not what I expect from the patron, yes you are entitled to your opinion but you didn't know any of us and maybe as someone who isn't English himself he should consider his customers and think carefully of how his views may have been received.
Not impressed.

What a fantastic little country pub with a great selection of both british and german beers and home cooked food. The host Wolfgang could not have been more friendly and helpful, he picked us up from a pre-arranged location on the walk, dropped us off again the next morning and even took my friend into the next town from where he could get a bus home as he was unable to continue the walk. The bar and lounge area is really cosy and inviting and there is a brilliant beer garden out the back with great views of the surrounding hills. Our room was spacious, clean and comfortable and Chop Gate itself is a beautiful little village. I will hopefully be staying here again before too long.

I booked a table for myself and my girlfriend for an evening meal after a walk to the Wainstones with the dog. We had last been to the Buck in 2019 and it was great with delicious food and a lovely atmosphere.
Sadly that wasn't the case this time.
On entering the pub, which was almost empty apart from one table of three people in the corner, the first thing the barman said was " haven't you got masks?" I said no and he then said "didn't you see the three signs on your way in?"
I pointed out that it's no longer law to wear a mask but he said that it was the owner's rules and that we could sit down without a mask but we wouldn't be allowed to move around or go to the toilet!
For all he knows I could be exempt from wearing a mask but I'm not obliged to prove this by law so he shouldn't say things like that.
We were tempted to leave as when I booked the table there was no mention of this ridiculous rule and everywhere else we've been in the last month, masks have been a personal choice which is how it should be when it's not a requirement by law.
We decided to stay even though we felt a bit uncomfortable and my girlfriend was a little upset, but things got more ridiculous when another customer went to the bar with his mask around his chin and the barman said nothing. Then a couple came down from the upstairs accommodation with no masks and the barman just served them and said nothing. Then to top it off the owner came in and started chatting to diners without a mask and guess what?, the barman said nothing! Such double standards it's laughable.
As for the food it was ok but not a patch on our previous experience and the beer tasted soapy, probably from over sanitising the glasses with covid spray. The atmosphere felt rather flat. The barman/waiter didn't even bother asking if we wanted desserts so we paid up at the bar (without masks) and left.
I suggest that the Buck Inn sticks to the laws of the land and stops making up it's own ridiculous and discriminatory rules that only seem to apply to certain people.
If you value freedom and fairness then maybe give this place a miss.
