This hotel/resort is a hidden gem in Middleburg Virginia. I felt like we were visiting our treasured country houses in Europe. The rooms are very regal and will leave you feeling like you are royalty. I heard many people visiting the spa were happy and then treated themselves to lunch at the cup and wine bar. I can highly recommend the food as being a five-star experience. It is a beautiful scenic area that has a vast variety of activities for the whole family. If you love horses make sure to visit Cupcake, Kardashian and Cole. There is an outdoor fire pit, plenty of hiking trails, along with guided activities for groups. Everything experienced far exceeded expectations. The Salamander left this mom of four feeling relaxed and refreshed for the first time in a really long time, it was exactly the respit I needed.

COVID has cut down out travel options significantly, and booking last minute on 4th of July weekend also made it tough, but we managed to get a nice room in Salamander.
This was a perfect getaway, just an hour or so away from DC.
We really enjoyed the activities (Especially the horse riding and zip line) and the place was nice and relaxing.
Staff was very cleaning focused and you could see them clean and sanitize stuff all the time. Masks were also worn at all times (almost), by both guests and staff and everyone was very serious about this.
Wanted to also mention by name Summer, Chris and Sam from the zip lining experience who really made the experience memorable for us, and also Gemma from hotel management who came through and helped out when we had some minor housekeeping issues. These and other team members made it a really great stay.
Pool and poolside drinks were also fantastic.

We went to the Salamander Resort to escape the DC area doldrums and were just blown away. The property is huge and gorgeous and adjacent to the beautiful small town of Middleburg. Staff was friendly and responsive. Check in was efficient and contact free. Everything was clean and distancing protocols were consistently in effect and generally observed by other guests. Our Grand Prixe suite was massive and perfect for a family of three. Room service was 30 minutes or less, and the staff at Harriman’s was friendly and remembered our names. The somm was knowledgeable and has a pretty diverse list of both New World and French wines. Although it is Hunt Country it was also laid back and not at all stuffy. Oh, and the showers were to die for. Highly recommend. Room Tip, ask for a meadow view.

I splurged and spent two nights here as a gift to myself for taking care of my toddler while working full time during the pandemic over the last 8 months. Unfortunately, except for the bathroom, it did not feel “five star.” First, everyone on staff referred to me as Mrs., even though I am not married and I treated myself to this getaway (honestly, kind of insulting). The in-room dinners were just ok or on par with any other hotel I could’ve booked for half the price or less. Breakfast was good, but they ask you to call for someone to pick up the trays when you are done, instead of putting it in the hallway. I called and requested twice and no one came to pick up the tray (which had left over smoked salmon), so I had to put it on my balcony so it wouldn’t smell up the room, which is where it stayed until my dinner was delivered (in other words, no enjoying the balcony I paid extra for). I did not see staff sanitizing any surfaces when I walked through public areas, and they certainly were not enforcing the mask rule with guests who were enjoying drinks in the lobby or halls near the front of the hotel. They also didn’t have the front doors open for circulation like the website claims. Finally, I wasn’t going to write a public review, but I got an email from the resort asking if I would take a survey, because they would “love to hear” about my stay so they could make my next visit “even more extraordinary.” I thought that would be a good way to provide feedback, but the survey was one question...how did you here about us. What a disappointment. Definitely not worth the money.

Five star elegance , if not more , in every respect ! Not an inch of this space isn’t perfectly appointed and most intelligently curated . Loved everything about this hotel , its massive grounds , luxurious rooms and most opulent lobby not to mention stunning and incredibly delicious restaurant - the Harriman . Thé breakfast menu hère by the way is unrivaled . I vowed to write a five star review just on the lemon brioche French toast ! Heaven in every bite . The pool is super beautiful and could’ve been relaxing had it not been for this rowdy group who imposed their music on the entire area thanks to their blasting it on their portable loud speakers . That was the only downside of this hotel but you can’t blame that on the actual hotel as on the actual clientele . So I’m still giving this place five stars and would give them ten stars if I could . You can tell the owner Sheila Johnson , who i just learned had her boys enrolled at my same alma mater , the Hill School , really poured her heart and soul on designing this place making sure no expense was spared . Even the toilet roll dispenser in the guest bathrooms is ridiculously elegant . Love love love the canopy bed and I’m a sucker for a soaking tub plus standing shower that I did not want to leave it was so luxurious . The built in marble shelves with folded towels are a lovely touch . I love how consistently carried out the equestrian theme is across every design element from the art on the walls to the sculptures and even cute little helmet shapes for room numbers . I’d stay here again in heartbeat . Oh and personal shout out to the front desk attendant Gemma who is exceptionally attentive , elegant and gives a wonderful first impression upon check in which is incredibly important . Can’t rave about this place enough .

The rooms were average and did not seem like a 5 star hotel room compared to Nemacolin Woodlands or The Heritage Resort. Our room was directly next to the elevators, and we could hear every conversation and noise from the elevators. Avoid staying in room 201.

We noticed some greasy finger prints on the headboard above the pillows. We wiped down the room with Lysol Wipes due to Covid-19, and that's when we noticed the finger prints on the head board. Also there were some spider webs in the balcony railing.

Due to Covid, the resort may have been short staffed during our stay. We waited over 15 minutes to place a to go food order at the Gold Cup Bar because there was 1 bartender making drinks and taking To Go food orders. We did see a bar manager, but she did not help us or any other patrons waiting at the bar for their drinks or food order. Once we placed the food order, I thought the bartender said that we could wait in our rooms and it would be delivered to our room. We paid the tab and waited in our room for 50 minutes before calling the front desk to check on the food. We were told that our food was waiting at the bar for us to pick up. Then I went to get the food from the bar and the food was cold by that time.

When we checked into our room, we called and asked for the complimentary Coffee & Tea service that was on the Arrival Experience information sheet. We were transferred to room service to place the order. When we placed the order, we were told that a "small" pot of coffee yielded 4 cups, so we chose that.

When we received the coffee the next morning, we were surprised to find a bill for $21.56 for the coffee. The "small" pot of coffee barely filled the 2 cups that it came with. It was disappointing to say the least.

The Gold Cup Bar Waitress for our dinner on the patio was amazing! She was friendly, knowledgeable, and gave the right amount of attention to our table. She was the best part of our experience at Salamander Resort.

Overall, we had a nice stay but there was no "WOW" factor. When we left the resort, we didn't have the urge to come back anytime soon.

POST COVID LOCKDOWN
We were very impressed with the facility, staff, food, and the amenities. We were a bit apprehensive about staying overnight, but couldn’t have been happier with our experience. The facility has ample parking (self parking), hand sanitizer throughout, is practicing social distancing, and all staff were wearing masks at all times. The room itself was very clean. The only trouble we had was with in room dinning. It took over an hour to get someone on the phone to order, but they were very apologetic. We had breakfast outside and the food and drinks were great. The facility is beautiful. We were able to walk the grounds. This hotel deserves their five stars. The staff was very friendly. Resort lifestyle without snooty ambiance. I recommend this hotel and will definitely be back

We decided to get away with friends for the first couple of days of the new year. The
Salamander exceeded our expectations. Our room was perfect. It had two closets, two sinks, a great bathtub, a luxurious shower, two great robes with slippers, and a separate toilet area. Best of all everything worked perfectly! Maid service was also great, with mini-scones as part of the turn-down service. We loved the property too. They have lots of great activities, including hiking, horseback riding, Frisbee golf, archery, hang-gliding, and even ax throwing! The spa is unbelievable! After our two night stay we were completely relaxed and rejuvenated! The hotel is even dog friendly!

Middleburg is a picturesque small town in Virginia horse and wine country. I took my daughter and her three month old baby for a mid-week girls' vacation at the Salamander Resort and Spa thinking we would enjoy a resort stay and touring the area. I cannot pretend we didn't have a lovely time. The Salamander grounds are beautiful. Our room was generously sized and well appointed. The staff, if a bit stiff and overtrained, was attentive. But we had to constantly think away the exorbitant price of lodging ($800 per night, spa services ($350 for a 90 minute massage) and food ($70 breakfasts for two, and $88 dinner entrees?!) Then there were the weird shortcomings in the quality of activities. The pool area, for example, can only be described as undersized and homely. Considering the gorgeous barn and its beautifully tended stall inhabitants, one would think the resort would offer a decent horse for a riding lesson. My daughter was offered an animal with a sweet disposition; unfortunately, his back right leg was misaligned to the extent that he couldn't have managed a canter had she been up to one after recent childbirth. Fully half the hour riding lesson was spent, incidentally, tacking up the horse. This for over $165. For that price, one might expect to mount a saddled horse at the beginning of the hour and get right into instruction. (It amused us to no end that at the end of the lesson we were treated to a take home "glam photo" of this sweet but unfortunate animal.) An avid tennis player, I arranged before arrival to hit with a pro. From the pictures online, it looked as if the courts were clay. I confirm this with the activities consultant I spoke with. Apparently, she had never been on the property, because the courts, albeit clay colored, are hard, and not in very good condition at all. Only one of the two tennis courts had a functional, intact net. Most objectionable, however, was the weird policy of preauthorizing $200 per day for "incidentals" and every charge beyond that immediately upon signing an expense to the room. Apparently, this hotel does not trust that it's guests will actually pay their outlandish bills.

In short, a three star stay. Much too expensive for where and what it is.

A beautiful resort but food and beverage service is so disappointing. Returned to Salamander, after several years, for my birthday weekend. I had such fond memories of my first stay here and high hopes for its continued excellence. For this visit we brought two other couples with us who had never been to help us celebrate. So disappointing and I am guessing none of us will ever return.

The place was jam packed with guests but I am not sure they were all guests of the resort. People sitting on couches in common areas with plates of food on their laps. Service in the restaurants was painfully slow - took over 2 hours for lunch and breakfast. Literally had to stand in lines 20 people deep to get a drink at the ONLY bar. Never mind alcoholic beverages, you can not even get a coke or a glass water anywhere other than the ONE bar. No sodas in the shop. No minibar in the room. When I called front desk from my room asking if there was anywhere I could get a drink they were very kind and said they would send someone up right away. Sure enough, 15 minutes later the cutest little 8 ounce glass bottle of diet coke arrived for the low low price of $13.44. One of the couples we were traveling with was literally told to go to Safeway nearby to get drinks. Are you kidding me?

Although the place is beautiful and our spa services were amazing, service is the most important aspect of any hotel stay in my opinion especially at luxury resorts. I expect them to book to the capacity to which they can manage. You should be able to take care of the food and beverage needs of your overnight guests before anything else.
