What a wonderful place! We have been here for eleven nights, and we loved every single minute of our stay, special thanks go out for Simon and the whole team who made the time so special and memorable, without you guys this would not have been the same. The resort is on the quieter side of the island, if you don’t mind riding a scooter this place is also very good for people willing to explore the island (be careful, there are a lot of stray dogs on the streets, it’s painful if you hit one with the scoter). Very nice and good equipped rooms, a nice pool and a wonderful garden. Everything is kept well and taken care after. The food is outstanding. Read the FAQ on the website, everything described there is totally true and should clear out nearly all questions and will help you clarify if this is the right place for you. Thanks again Simon, Ning, Gita and Ping, you gave us a home away from home, we appreciate this a lot and it was a pleasure being your guests.

We certainly made the right choice picking Amber Sands to stay for 3 days. This small family run business is set in a beautiful tranquil bay, away from the hustle and bustle of White sands Beach, but close enough to it if a change of scene was wanted. The owner, Simon was extremely helpful and a great host, as were his family. It has a casual laid back air. The home cooked food was excellent, and the views from our room were stunning. Loved Koh Chang and will return.

We had a great stay here. It’s a very peaceful area, perfect for what we wanted after busy cities. Room 1 had the most amazing views over the beach/ sea. Very comfortable beds. I saw a few of the other rooms, all have great views and lovely decor. Only small criticism of our room is that the shower room could use an update however everything works perfectly and it is very spacious. As everyone has said Simon and his lovely family make this place special. He is so helpful, nothing is too much trouble and we were very grateful that he arranged our transfers and took us across the island to our next hotel himself which was so kind. Food here is lovely and good price- we ordered some fish and prawns one night and that was amazing A short walk up the beach to Serenity for cocktails became our evening routine, nice bar and great views there too.

A really lovely little place on the island. Well kept, clean and friendly. We went with three small children and had an adjoining two bedroom garden villa which met our needs. The children were able to run around safely and swim in the sea as this side of the island is sheltered and sea conditions are very smooth. The restaurant does lots of different foods. Simon and his wife Ning can sort anything you need out from clothes washing to car/moped hire snd he’ll tell you all the really nice places to head out to! I would thoroughly recommend. We will definitely be heading back!

Wow 🤩🤩🤩🤩 Absolutely loved my stay at Amber Sands Hotel. The hotel grounds are stunning and very well maintained, the beach 🏝️ located 1cm from the hotel grounds is beautiful and the sea 🌊 is generally calm and very relaxing. The hotel provides free kayaks but I never had a chance to use them. The rooms are perfect, quiet, rustic with quiet air conditioning and soothing lighting that accents the decor. The swimming pool was again very beautiful and perfect size for the grounds ( anything bigger really would be unsuitable) . The restaurant is located directly next to the beach ( so close in fact that if you was to drop cutlery, there’s a chance it may go onto the sand 😉) but this only added to the experience and relaxed Amber Sands vibe as you eat and drink with the sea lapping up against the shore just metres from you. The food was exceptional, the menu offers something for everyone but I particularly enjoyed the scrambled egg with my breakfast every morning, the chefs clearly have passion for what they do. The staff/owners 🤔 they were top of their game on making you feel welcome and going out of their way to make your stay unforgettable experience. Simon the owner is very knowledgeable of the island 🏝️ and can always help with suggestions on things to do and see on the beautiful island. Would definitely go to this hotel again ( actually already booked to go back to Amber Sands soon 😜)

Post COVID we wanted to go away as a family somewhere new. A gamble as the first time anywhere can be a risk (especially after COVID). We read multiple reviews of Amber Sands and thought the calmness of the eastern side could be perfect for us travelling with parents, my sister, niece and my own family with 2 young kids (4.5 and 2.5) and my wife. The reviews initially supported our choice, and prior to arrival Simon was very helpful and receptive to our messages - sorting a cot and explaining the best process for travel arrangements to the island. Even offering to meet us at the ferry terminal itself. I was nervous as the choice was mine to visit here - so if things didn’t reach my rather exacting standards (I’m a commercials producer with OCD who has very particular requirements for anywhere visited) I wasn’t going to be easily satisfied. Also arriving after a day trip from Bangkok with 3 children did mean I was never going to be my freshest for a balanced first impression. Well… the honest truth is we all thought Amber Sands was terrific. A superb location and hosts that clearly surpassed our expectations. The resort is in a prime location for relaxation, and especially so with children. Whole afternoons can be spent playing in the calm sea, lizard watching on the ceiling, listening to the surrounding jungle as you play in the pool and eating the carefully prepped food whilst waiting for your massage. Thailand holiday stuff - very welcome Thailand holiday stuff! But what separates this from the standard is that the resort is run by a family and you really feel that warmth throughout. The resort feels like you are away, but also at home. Quite a lovely balance and above all it feels safe. Simon, Ning, Kita and Pin were fantastic hosts. Simon was never too busy to help with fishing boat tours, vehicle rental, airport transfers, lifts into town and also saving us when our confirmations for our homeward flight got a little iffy. A very dedicated person to helpings things go as smoothly as possible for us. Ning, Kita and Pin helped with food, the kids and any request we made was helped to the best of their capabilities – they really couldn’t do enough for us. Actually relaxing with two small children isn’t easy on holiday but they made it very easy. They were not pushy only supportive to our queries wherever needed to help us relax. The bungalows were tastefully appointed with little touches to separate them from each other - positioned to maximise the tranquillity of the resort. The beds comfortable, clean and well maintained and for rooms 1 & 2 (my sister and parents) the view exceptional (we were in the family room which still had a great view but those are certainly the best on the resort). The food was also exceptional (chicken and cashew nuts oh my). We chose to eat breakfasts and some dinners there in our 2 week stay and each was wonderful. Walking along the beach in the evening was another highlight. Checking the small crabs, paddling along, looking at the view, enjoying the foliage and sea. All core memories for my little ones. A wonderful value for money place to stay – but be warned it is quiet and calm – which for us was perfect. If you want more life, then you will need to hire a car or navigate the not so often (and if you’re going into town often expensive) taxis to the other side of the island. We found hiring a car (or scooters that are available) to actually be quite a reasonable daily rate (and fun loading people into the open boot!). It's only 10 mins or so on very straightforward and well maintained road to the other side of the island. The west side of the island has lots going on too should you want - but we always enjoyed returning to Amber Sands afterwards to allow some Zen back into our life. You also have to be mindful that on Koh Chang, and also across Thailand, this is a post COVID time where islands are slowly healing after a period of no visitors and therefore a lack of tourism, which is the primary source of income for resorts. Do bear that in mind. Simon and the family are doing almost everything there currently with no external help - so support them by visiting, so they can keep this beautiful oasis running in Koh Chang. As a final note my family let me know that this was probably the nicest holiday as a family they’ve had. My father instantly tried to get us all to sign-up to return next year. Something I would love to do! Hopefully that’s testament enough to how fantastic this place is.

Amber Sands has some very attractive features, but some aspects that are real turn-offs. First the good: friendly staff, well-kept garden, impeccably clean (but very small) pool, beautiful view out over the sea (especially at sunrise and early morning), quiet surroundings (quiet eastern side of Ko Chang), clean bungalows. The surroundings of the resort are beautiful (see photo). Unfortunately, there are quite a number of things that are not so good: very small strip of sand at the beach (quickly giving way to rocks), old fixtures and furnishings (some of which need maintenance, noisy air conditioner, no TV, poor lighting in the bungalow, small bathroom, bed too soft, no complimentary breakfast, limited menu selections (if you want fish, you need to order the day before!), quite high price for what you get. The breakfast that we ordered was particularly disappointing. Not cheap, but still only came with a couple of very small pieces of bacon and weird-tasting scrambled eggs (perhaps fried in margarine? we couldn't stomach them). But, the biggest turn-off for us was the horrendous condition of the bed sheets! (see photos) We only discovered the multiple holes in the sheets when we were getting ready to sleep, so it was too late to ask for replacements. Although the sheets seemed to be clean, the condition of them (along with a too-soft mattress) kept us from getting a decent night's sleep. In our view, there is no excuse for a resort that charged us almost $100 dollars per night to have this kind of appalling bed linens. In contrast, we stayed at a different place on Ko Chang other nights for 40% less, which turned out to be two times nicer! This resort might have been great at one time and it still could be. But, many things need improvement!

Response from Simon Brown, Owner at Amber Sands Beach Resort

Thank you Raintree_Thailand for your detailed review. I am so sorry that you did not enjoy your Amber Sands experiance. What can I say im so sorry we failed you. You did not get the the experiance that the majority of our guest get. I could make excuses saying the laundry got mixed up, we were short staffed, the girls are tired from a busy season but at the end of the day the responsibility stops with me and I took my eye off the ball and for that I sincerely apologise. Had you have come and complained the folliwing day i would have been absolutely mortified like i am today having just read your review. I would of however refunded you in full as this is not the standard of service that is acceptable to us. Covid 19 obviously took its toll on us and we have spent alot of money on refurbishment, regrouting the pool.rethatching the bungalows, refurbing the restaurant and buying new towels, pool towels and bedding, the first part of your review reflects this and I thank you for your honest comments. I do have to disagree with your comments on our menu our menu is comprehensive enough to offer a varied choice whilst manageable enough for the chef to prepare the quality produce that our many TripAdvisor reviews reflect. We are not a specialist sea food restaurant and therefore do not have the high turnover of produce hence why we ask guests to order the day before. I appreciate if you are only booked in for 1 night this is not satisfactory however the average stay is between 4 to 5 nights and no-one has ever had a problem with this format. We have not had a price increase for 5 years despite the rising costs of gas, electric and produce. The scrambled egg that you wernt happy with contains a small amount of coconut milk and again there have been lots of positives feed back about this. However if it was not to your liking you only had to say and we wouldn't have charged you for this item. I like to think we are totally approachable and totally focused on customer satisfaction. I'm a little confused about the lighting issue you had in your bungalow. All of our bungalows have 2 x bedside lights with warm white light bulbs, 2 x reading lights with high intensity white bulbs and 2 x main lights with white light bulbs. There is also an outside light with a yellow light bulb that apparently mosquitos don't like. We have never had anyone complain that with all these lights the room is too dark. Likewise regarding the mattress our comfort rating on all of the platforms that we use is in excess of 9 (out of 10) however again I understand that what one person thinks is great is not satisfactory for another but I like to think that we have found a happy medium. We are also very clear about not having TVs in our rooms and you will not find this listed on any of the various platforms that we use. In fact the majority of our guest prefer this as a noisy neighbour with the tv turned up loud would spoil the ambiance of the resort and when you have a beutiful view of the bay the local fishermens boats bobbing up and down in the sea, the beautiful sun rises not too many people miss the TV, but again there are exceptions. The noisy aircon has now been adressed and is now purring like a kitten. Im just very sorry that you didnt come to the reception to inform us of your issues and to give us a chance to rectify the problem before going to social media but hey ho this is now the world that we live in.

We had the most amazing stay at Amber Sands. As a family of 4, the children were safe and made to feel welcome with access to the pool, paddle boards and kayaks which entertained them for hours on end ! Simon and his family were the most amazing hosts and provided us with lots of information about how to get the most out of our stay on Koh Chang ; which we did ! From helping with transfers , car hire and recommendations for places to visit , Simon couldn’t do enough and his wife was the most amazing cook ; next Thai omelettes and she knocked up a mean Panang ! Couldn’t recommend Amber Sands enough if you are looking for a real family stay on Koh Chang - Thank you x

We strongly recommend this place. The key elements that made us extremely satisfied with this accommodation are many: 1. the location, on the less crowdy and therefore best side of the island, yet close to the north meaning one can easily reach the other side, and close to a number of places worth visiting 2. the owners, they are lovely and make you feel at home and help you with whatever you may need, you just feel at home 3. the color of the sand of the beach, incredibly beautiful 4. very romantic scenery especially in the evening 5. spacious rooms 6. the restaurant, familiar, great scenery, and good food 7. all facilities just for free, including a little catamaran! As in many locations in Thailand, unfortunately, scrap comes from the sea in quantity. Not much you can do about it, but, just in all fairness.

Thank you Marco for taking the time to review us. I think your detailed description on Amber Sands is very accurate. Just one minor inaccuracy we are Koh chang not Chiang Mai. At certain times of the year when there is a north wind the sea is not its usual calm, peaceful, serene self and we actually get waves, unfortunately this does bring in some debris which occurred when you were with us. As you saw we were constantly raking the beach to keep this effect to a minimum. I am glad it didn't spoil your stay and very pleased that you enjoyed your time at Amber sands Beach Resort.

This is one of the places where once there, you simply don’t want to leave because everything is just so wonderful and perfect. This lovely family owned little resort is situated on the east and more tranquil side of Ko Chang, a short drive from the ferry, and as soon as you enter, you’re met by this beautiful scenery with colourful flowers, the amazing views over the sea and the cosy cottages hidden in the lush vegetation. This was our fourth visit and we can’t wait to go back. During previous visits we have stayed in both the cottages and the beach house and the rooms have all been amazing. Big and spacious, beautifully decorated and all of them have a nice litte seating area outside from where you can enjoy your morning coffee or evening drink. There is both a nice little refreshing pool and it’s also possible to swim in the sea, or take a trip in the cayaks available for their guests. Like previous times we’ve had intentions of going to the west coast for dinner but have always ended up staying “home” as the atmosphere has been so nice and the food, prepared by Ning and her helpers, have always been absolutely delicious. Their menu consists of both Thai and Western dishes and so far everything we’ve tried has been really really good! Ning is really a true magician in the kitchen. An amazing place, great restaurant and with lots to do or just relax, but the best have always been the amazing owners Simon and Ning who together with their wonderful staff do everything they can to make your visit to a very memorable one. Always available for a chat, advice regarding tours and transports, a special meal, massage appointment or whatever you might need, they are simply the best hosts you could wish for. Such a sweet couple and we also had a lovely time with their cute son Atti and their sweet new dogs. So if you are looking for a very special place, a place with beauty, peace and wonderful hosts, this IS the place, where Memories are made, like a sign in the restaurant says.
