In the Heart of Douro Valley's Demarcated Wine Region, considered World Heritage by UNESCO, you will find the The Vintage House - Douro, a 5 star luxury hotel overlooking the Douro river. In fact, when you get there you won't believe how close to the water it actually is. Once in your room, your first instinct will be to walk to the balcony to take in the unique landscape before you, already thinking how wonderful it will be to have lunch in the restaurant esplanade, making the best of the view. At night, after a meal in the award-winning "Rabelo" Restaurant, chat the night away with your friends in the "Library Bar", sipping a nice Port Wine.

We spent 3 nights at the Vintage House earlier this month. The hotel room itself was fine with comfortable furnishings, a firm bed, and good bed linens. The setting of the hotel on the bank of the Duoro is lovely. The bathroom was beautiful with a tiled sink vanity. However, as is not unusual in hotels of this age, the shower was problematic -- consisting of a shower head attachment to the tub faucet that had poor water pressure and difficult-to-control water temperature. The availability of free parking in a lot in front of the hotel was a real plus. On the other hand, the meals that we had at the hotel were mediocre or worse. We chose to eat dinner our first night in the hotel restaurant, Restaurante Rabelo. I am submitting a separate review on the TA listing for the Restaurante Rabelo, so won't go into detail here; suffice it to say that the food preparation was poor and the service amateurish. The breakfast buffet was a step up from dinner but the wide variety of foods offered were not matched by their quality. The croissants and other sweet pastries were sweet but their texture was lacking, as though they were leftover from the day before. The contents of the chafing dishes of hot offerings -- scrambled eggs, sausages, and bacon -- were tired. My request for a latte coffee resulted in a coffee drink that was much closer to cappucino, with thick layers of foam interspersed among the coffee, rather than expresso topped with steamed milk and a tiny layer of foam. The only good food that we had was a snack at the bar on our last day. By then we'd concluded that we should stick to the most basic of choices. Both the toasted cheese sandwich that I ordered and the cheese plate that my husband ordered were fine.

Great location on the river and easy access to boat trips up the river. Good looking hotel but expensive for what we got. Breakfast was good. Room was good. However smell of sewage in the bar area on the lower ground - maybe cause of all the rain.

A beautiful historic hotel right on the river. The location was great for a launching point to the wineries, and the hotel has a decent restaurant. The prices at the restaurant were a bit high, but not crazy. The room was nice, and we had a exit going down into the courtyard with a view of the river. Our only complaint is that one of the three nights we were there was rather warm, and they had the system set to heat instead of cool, so there was no air-conditioning that night and it was bloody hot. The other two nights were cold outside, so we just cracked the patio door open. Not ideal, but it worked.

I echo the other traveller who calls it a decent 3 star hotel. That's what it is. Beautiful location, faded glory. We paid 543 euros for one night bed and breakfast, albeit fairly last minute. First room airconditioner not working, so we changed rooms - all done swiftly and pleasantly. Second room, air conditioner fine but no hair conditioner. Called reception but no one answered for forty minutes. When they did, they brought up requisite conditioner promptly. Generally very tired decor and slightly jaded staff. They were all very pleasant with no attitude issues, but just tired and somewaht bored. For example, when i asked about bad reviews of hotel food, they shrugged and agreed and suggested I eat elsewhere. It could be amazing, but sadly just outdated and over priced with an air of fatigue.

I am not sure I will be able to give the deserved credit to this hotel when I describe it, but I will try. Mouth dropping. Impressive. Lovely. We arrived from Lisbon at the Pinhão train station on a hot day and, due to its closeness to The Vintage House, we decided to roll our luggage ourselves in the direction of the hotel not realizing how challenging the task would become on those cobblestone roads! As we entered the hotel courtyard -laden with beautiful bougainvillea above our heads, one of their employees (so sorry I forgot his name, tall, thin, dark hair and a beautiful smile), rushed to our aid and took our luggage. Thank goodness! From that point on, it was a PERFECT stay! A beautiful property! We met very professional, efficient, and helpful staff at the reception desk. We proceeded to our suite and, OMG, it was huge! Comfort at its best! Very high ceilings throughout the suite. It had a VERY large bathroom with a fully enclosed large double shower, his and her sinks well spaced over a very large marble countertop with plenty of space for my husband's and my toiletries, a tray with all sorts of amenities and top quality toiletries, a huge bathtub, plenty of towels, two upholstered chairs - one placed at each end of the bathroom, plenty of lighting plus natural lighting filtering through a window, and adjacent to this huge bathroom, there was a separate/private ample room with a toilet and another sink and plush towels. We had a full size living room, with a "coffee corner" with all provisions, a medium size dining room, and our sleeping area was rather ample as well with a very comfortable king size bed and a night table at each side. There were 2 double-doors closets with one of them including a safe and a mini fridge, the other had plenty of hangers and fluffy robes and slippers placed beautifully on a rack. Lots of windows providing lots of natural lighting throughout the suite and as I said before, very tall ceilings. Last but not least, a lovely balcony overlooking the Douro river. High class everywhere! Absolutely gorgeous facility surrounded buy plenty of greenery, floral plants, tall pines, well manicured courtyards, and a lovely pool area. Just beautiful! Highly recommend staying at The Vintage House!

We were a little apprehensive after reading so many unflattering reviews and were expecting a dilapidated crumbling hotel with shoddy service. What a revelation! The building is fantastic, the grounds amazing and the location would struggle to be beaten. Yes the building is old. If you want something sleek modern and contemporary look elsewhere, if you want old world elegance, charm and character look no further, this hotel has it in spades. The staff were attentive, pleasant, professional and extremely helpful. everything was beautifully looked after and maintained. We had no problem at all with the air conditioning (we stayed in September and it was very warm) and had no issue with the hotel wifi, which we used throughout our two night stay. The hotel was full we were told on checking in, but at no time did it feel crowded, in fact it was peaceful wherever we went in the hotel to sit and enjoy the scenery, a drink or food. Breakfast was excellent, a wide selection to choose from, buffet style, with fresh foods regularly brought out right up to the end of service. If arriving by train, be aware that you can access The Vintage House grounds directly from the train station platform - look for the gate in the wall, and save walking all the way around (not that it’s a long way, it is right next door, but why drag your bags any further than you have to, right?) Our only disappointment was that we had booked a ‘gastronomic experience’ . I definitely would not do that again. We did indeed receive the promised three courses with wine selection each night, but were disappointed and a little let down that we did not have the choice of the full menu, we were given a ‘special’ menu with very few choices, and two glasses of wine each, a white with our starter and a red with our main. House wine presumably, the same whatever food you ordered so not exactly a wine pairing. Not really a ‘gastronomic’ experience at all, and on the second night we had exactly the same menu with the same limited offering. Our fault for not checking before booking this package. We heartily recommend The Vintage House, and would not hesitate to stay again, and respectfully suggest that some of the reviewers should have spent more time enjoying the stunning river view rather than looking at any faded carpeting in their rooms. Our biggest disappointment though - not staying longer! Thank you for a memorable stay, we hope to return one day and explore the area more thoroughly.

The Vintage House Hotel is a 47-suite boutique five-star resort located in Pinhao directly on the river. Our room was spacious with good views from the balcony. It is a full-service hotel complete with an excellent breakfast, restaurant, and a casual bar for afternoon drinks and snacks, a nightcap, and board games. The grounds are nicely landscaped with a swimming pool in the center and outdoor seats for dining. Service at the Vintage House was prompt and personal. The front desk helped us book our wine tastings at the vineyards when we had problems doing it. They can also arrange a comprehensive tasting at the hotel anytime. The staff followed up on anything we needed and there was always a pleasant greeting by name. I would not hesitate to come back here on my next visit.

Location is excellent, staff is mostly good and the bed is comfortable. Those are the good things….. Sadly this property although lovely is in serious need of renovation. The air condition was inoperative in our room, the plumbing fixtures leave a great deal to be desired and the room furnishings are old and tired including the bleached out carpeting. The wireless internet is spotty, only working for about 30 seconds at a time before getting bumped off with the only place having a reliable connection being the bathroom. The combination of no air conditioning and unreliable internet made for an incredibly frustrating experience. To add to the frustration, the shower is basically a bathtub with a sprayer attached that you can place in a vertical holder to shower under except that the holder is loose and the sprayer puts more water outside of the tub than on the person attempting to shower. After sweating in bed the first night, I stopped and asked to have someone in maintenance check on the AC in the room before we left for our day of touring this incredibly beautiful region. When I arrived back at the hotel, the room was still warm so I called the front desk to ask how my request had been handled and what the result was. The attendant politely asked to call me back so he could talk with “maintenance”. He phoned back a few minutes later to tell me that he wasn’t able to get anyone from maintenance to answer then asked what the problem was. This is incredibly frustrating since I was gone all day and obviously my request was ignored. The desk attendant offered up that the hotel is controlled by a master thermostat so there is no control by individual room occupants. I asked then if that’s the case, what is the thermostat controller in the room for? His answer was, “that’s a good question”. He indicated that the entire hotel is set to 18C which would be lovely but my room is more like 24C and to that he suggested that they would bring a fan. He showed up at the door with the fan and I invested him in the room to feel the temperature to which he acknowledged how warm the room was but said that he hoped the fan would help. No offer of another room or anything other than the fan. Thankfully the fan was helpful and the outdoor temperature moderated so that I was able to open the window at night and enjoy a bit cooler experience sleeping. I’m sorry to say that this property does not live up to the guest expectations. Clearly the reason my request was ignored is that there’s probably nothing the staff can do to make it better. They even acknowledged that the HVAC system is very old and doesn’t work that well. For a property billing itself out as one of the top properties in the valley, they’ve got some serious work to do in order to meet the expectation they set for the guests.
