Stayed with family for a week on half board basis. Check was quick and efficient, reception staff were all friendly and helpful. The location was very good and 5 minute walk to beach, there were shops opposite the hotel for anything you needed, particularly useful for stocking up on water. You can walk into the town which was only 10 minutes, with restaurants all around. Room was lovely, we had a triple room, we liked the style as furniture was wooden and gave a rustic forest feel, the toilet and shower were separate and not next to each other, so some may not like this, but this was fine for us, the shower was great and toiletries were available in dispenser, which were good quality. The rooms had cupboards but limited for you to store your luggage, safe, fridge and coffee facilities were provided . All rooms have balconies and look out to pool, bear in mind that rooms and balconies next to next each other so you can see and hear people outside, luckily we had gone when a bit quieter, so not an issue. Food was fine, although a little repetitive at times but overall good selection and fresh food cooked to your preference, we ate out a couple of times, you do have to pay for water at dinner. The lady welcoming you into restaurant was very friendly and always knew your room number, good customer service! Pool was too cold so did not use, towels provided at reception, the bar was good and offered good selection. We did pay to use the rooftop pool and bar which was lovely as you had beautiful views of the beach and town, you can go for drinks in evening, live music was available . The hotel also has indoor pool, steam room and sauna but you had to pay to use, which we did and it was only us in there, hotel should not charge and it’s a shame it’s under utilised. We had nice stay and hotel was lovely and we would definitely recommend and stay again.

The Kaktus Playa is a wonderful hotel! We stayed in July 2021, and had a fantastic experience! Covid protocols are enforced, cleanliness was top-notch, and the facilities were first class. The staff was amazing and very friendly. The chef made me an excellent omelet every morning, and I don't know how the bartender was simultaneously on the roof bar and the one by the lower pool deck, but he was, and he was great!
I asked three different people in town, including the front desk clerk at this hotel, how many American tourists they see in Calella. All of them said we were the first they had ever encountered! I'm challenging American tourists who want a little local flavor to come here to Calella and try this hotel and very friendly city! Great beaches, a fun water park floating just offshore, bikepaths, restaurants, even cheap (6 Euro) all day parking on city streets. Mind you, this is not Disneyland, this is the real Spain. There are a couple of hotels boarded up, probably because tourism is down during covid. And this town has some history, so not every building has a fresh coat of paint. But everyone is friendly and accommodating, and I guarantee you will enjoy yourself here if you are not a miserable person looking for reasons to hate everything.
Now, back to the hotel. It's a few minutes walk or a short taxi ride from the train station. There is plenty of on street parking surrounding it, but they also have a garage you can use for 15 Euros if you want. The staff speaks probably five or six different languages. The room we got was amazing! 709, top floor corner, with a jacuzzi and two outdoor showers on the terrace! King size bed in the room, with a sofa and another shower inside if you don't like showering in nature. Room was spotless and modern, great tv with lots of channels, though only a couple in English, a small refrigerator to keep drinks cold. In short, everything you need, and even some things you don't but appreciate anyway.
Breakfast is buffet style, with made to order omelets if you wish. Everyone must wear a mask when at the buffet, but you remove your mask at your table. I thought the food was delicious, with a huge variety of hot and cold items. We didn't do the evening meal, but a lot of people did, and they seemed to be enjoying it.
The front desk gave us a couple of recommendations for bike rentals and the like, and they were great to deal with.
I don't know what else to say except we will be back, and I hope many Americans join us in finding this wonderful town and hotel!

We have just returned from a week at this hotel. Our Mediterranean Sea view room was spacious and spotlessly clean. We had a large balcony, and an enormous comfortable bed. The electric roller blinds on the window that could be operated from the bed were an absolute genius idea !! Air con in the room, and a separate toilet and shower. Dual purpose shower (rainfall and power) with clean white fluffy towels every day. The provided products for use in the shower (shower gel, shampoo, handwash and body lotion) were of an excellent quality and lovely to use. All of the staff we met were cheerful and happy to help. Big shout out to the reception staff, they provided accurate and useful information and enjoyed a giggle along the way. Everyone was very approachable. Breakfast buffet was excellent, eggs cooked to order and an array of meats, cheeses, cereals, breads and fruit all readily available. Only downside was the size of the pool and the surrounding area, but with the beach a three minute walk away, not too much of a problem. The Sky Lounge could use some more areas with shade and also a more chilled music vibe. We didn't enjoy the techno trance tunes at 3.00pm in the afternoon. We would definitely recommend this hotel to couples and singles, but not for families with young children, and we will be back to see you. Thank you for having us... see you soon Kaktus Playa ! D & M xx

This is my first 5 stars hotel that made me spend 40 minutes to find a parking spot for my car while my wife carried our 4 pieces of luggage by her own to our room (keeping an eye on our 6 years old daughter at the same time) because there was no available staff to help her. They say there's a private parking nearby meaning that you have to park on the street in a pay area. Try to find a free spot in a beach town in august!

It has 2 lifts in a 7 story building with 200 rooms. Expect big queues at breakfast and dinner times.

The staff is kind but it is very reduced for the size of the hotel. Do not expect your used dishes will be removed at the self service restaurant before you leave your table.

And if you want to use the lockers for your luggage after checking out, you have to pay 2 € per locker (cabin luggage size). Again, no staff to help you and only 1 lift goes down to the basement where the lockers are, so big queues after checking out.

No 5 stars service at all.

Hello LitosJones, Thank you very much for your comments and ratings on Tripadvisor, it helps us to improve the experiences of our customers. Unfortunately, in Calella during the month of August parking is complicated. Currently the hotel has expanded the number of parking spaces contracted to minimize this problem. We are very sorry that you didn’t meet your expectations during your stay with us. Regarding the lockers, we inform you that the hotel has a left-luggage office to leave your bags and a paid locker to be able to leave things of value. We apologize for not giving you the service you deserved. In Kaktus Playa we work every day to improve and to offer the best of services to our customers. Best regards Eric C. – Manager Hotel Kaktus Playa

If you are arriving with a car be warned- the hotel claims it has parking but has few spaces which are constantly overbooked (we tried to book but were told we had to queue at reception at 12pm but still didn't get a space in 3 days. On arrival we were lucky enough to park on the street a couple of blocks away soo didn't have to drag our bags too far, but the next day we had to circle the town for literally 45 minutes to find someone leaving a space to park. Our next problem was that my kids (11 and 15 boy and girl) were sharing a room and their room was made up as double on arrival. I asked at 6pm if their room could be remade up as a twin rather than a double. I was assured that it would be, and we went out for the afternoon. I was horrified on our return at 10pm (after 45 minutes trying to find a parking space) to see no-one had remade their beds. My daughter was really tired so I went to reception and asked again and was assured the room would be sorted out in the next 10 minutes. Half an hour after the 10 minutes were up (at 10.45) I had a child crying with tiredness and went down again. The receptionist who had assured me the room would be sorted had gone and the night porter said he would be up in 15 minutes. I said no, please give me the bedding and I will do it myself. After a short delay he and I took the bedding up and made up their beds together. I learned there is only one receptionist and one night porter in the whole huge hotel which is why they can't sort out problems. The understaffing caused other problems for the guests. Although the main pool is nice, a coffee order at the pool bar took 50 minutes to arrive. The hand soap at the sink had not been replaced so we had none. The top wasn't working in the bathroom. The corridor became dirty during our stay. The breakfast, however was lovely- with really fresh, juicy fruit and everything beautifully arranged.
IN general, I would suggest the management looks at staffing levels. If you can't get the right number of staff you need to book less people into the hotel. It is not fair to the staff or guests to be so understaffed. They have to deal with disgruntled guests, and the guests deserve better service for the price they are paying.

Thank you very much Hopper2013 for your opinion. We are glad to know that you liked the pool area and our breakfast. We are very sorry for the discomfort caused by not having a parking space upon arrival at the hotel. Currently we have expanded the number of parking spaces to offer a better service to our customers. On the other hand, we apologize for the incident with your children's room. Inform you that when a client notifies us of a problem, we solve it at the moment, and in your case, the way to proceed wasn’t the one we have established in our protocol. We have passed your assessment to the relevant department by applying the necessary corrective measures to prevent these cases from recurring. We booked the hotel for it amenities but soon learnt that the sunbeds advertised in the beach were €15 euros extra a day, rooftop / terrace pool access was an extra €20 euros a day to hire a Kettle for the room was an extra €10 euros a day. Sauna, steam room and gym advertised were closed. Half board does not include free water with meal. We have been misinformed about by these add ons with false advertising. We were also misled at reception to go for a room upgrade in order access some amenities which we learnt after we could not access (roof terrace). We will not be back.

Cousins holiday brought us to the kaktus playa hotel , we arrived and were greeted by the lovely Tere on reception who was quite wealth of knowledge from what's in the hotel to the bes eateries in town (her seafood recommendation of la peixateria was a delight. The room on first inspection unfortunately had been let down by the house keeping staff but was quickly rectified when we informed reception so no harm done. The rooms are spacious and the storage and bathroom spaces are generous (open the bathroom mirror ladies ) .The downstairs pool is not as large as it first appears in photos but this is not an issue as there is also a infinity pool on the roof deck for 20 euro a room (well worth it) vs the cost of beach sunbeds . The deck has relaxing music attentive staff ( the fabulous sunshine that is Celia) and is a real sun trap for those sun worshipers. The breakfast is a foodies paradise, different variations each day, you will be rolling yourself out I assure you ... beach body ...bye bye . The location is a few minutes walk from the beach and 5 /10 minutes walk to the main shopping street and eateries of Calella . A great hotel of which we would be happy to return to .
Our only note is that there is no entertainment of an evening besides the rooftop music which isn't for everyone . This didn't phase us but understand some holiday goers enjoy hotel entertainment of an evening .

Really glad we upgraded to seaview room as the view towards the pool, through no fault of the hotel, featured building work in next hotel. I would say this hotel is 4 star not 5. Rooms nicely furnished and clean but it does not quite reach 5 star standard. Only 1 free bottle of water, you have to pay for the coffee capsules for the nepresso machine in the room, free toiletries but no luxury brands. Reception staff are lovely and helpful but no porters or concierge service. The room wasn't cleaned until the afternoon and the restaurant for breakfast this morning was a bit of a bombsite with dirty plates. There had been coach trips all leaving at the same time but it did take a while to get it clean. As normal the pool was chilly and jacuzzi cool.

Upon arrival, the room that was sold as a "standard double room" was actually two single beds pushed together with nothing to join them. I spoke to reception, who confirmed this would be the same in all standard rooms. They sent a maid up to the room who wrapped the two beds in a duvet, as if that could solve the problem.

The air conditioning didn't work properly, only one vent was working near the door, the main vent in the room did not work in the 33 degree heat of Spain.

When in the shower, I turned around and the shampoo and shower gel containers were completely empty, no washing your hair, or anything else for that matter.

The mini fridge also wasn't working, we looked around, but there were no buttons or anything.

Finally, I had one of the worst nights of my life. The walls and ceiling at the hotel are cardboard thin, every step, every conversation, every movement the upstairs guests made could be heard in the room as if they were in there with us, such poor structure for a hotel, really appalling. We could not sleep until 4am.

We went down to reception to talk about all this, but the shift had changed and, unfortunately, the night receptionist could barely understand any english, so he just looked at us with a blank expression, unable to understand.
The next morning we asked for an early cancellation, but as it was a 3rd party booking, they couldn't help. We were so tired after the nightmarish night we had, all we wanted was to leave and find a place to rest.

This is a two star hotel at best.

Dear Manddah, Thank you very much for taking a few minutes of your time to leave us your comment. We feel sorry to learn that your experience with us hasn’t met your expectations. We are very sorry that we were unable to fulfill your request for a double bed. Inform you that we always take note and try to satisfy the preferences of our customers, but we cannot guarantee them 100% since it depends on the availability on the dates. As for the air conditioning, we must say that for it to work, the balcony doors have to be closed since it’s an automatic air conditioning system. We sincerely apologize for the soap and gel incident. We have shared your incident with the department manager to check that the cleaning protocol is being applied correctly and prevent this from happening again. On the other hand, we are surprised by the comment about soundproofing since it is an aspect that we have taken into account during the reform of the hotel. However, we will check it again to make sure it meets the desired soundproofing standards. Thank you very much again for your comment and for helping us to improve. Summer Holiday with partner, spent more for the “Mediterranean” view however left disappointed as did not look anything like what was advertised as impossible to do so as a big hotel in front of Hotel Kaktus. Furthermore does not make it obvious on website that the sky lounge and spa pools u have to pay a charge to use or have paid for the suite. Also states on website that sun loungers on beach are free however us to pay £6 each. Overall however a lovely hotel looked and seemed the best one in the area. Great location and me and my partner had a good time. I think we got robbed by the info lady in reception for transfer to water world probably best to book in the town. Pre book transfer from airport too as taxi cost us around €110 when was advertised only around €60.

Hello Stan1998, Thank you very much for sharing your comment with us and with other Tripadvisor users. We are very sorry that you had this impression of the hotel and that we haven’t met your expectations in some aspects. Access to the Sky Lounge (rooftop pool) is included in the room price for guests staying in Nature rooms or Suites, otherwise the price is 20€ per room per day. We also very much regret the misunderstanding that may have occurred with the service of hammocks and parasols. This service is included in the Premium Pack or the Beach Club Pack. For a possible future reservation, we recommend that you contact us to advise you on the services that best suit your needs and we will be happy to help you. Regarding the price of the transfer, we regret the possible misunderstanding that has occurred with the price. The prices we give are those that are stipulated by the taxi drivers. The transfer from Barcelona airport to Calella costs about 120€ approximately and the transfer from Girona airport to Calella costs about 50€ or 60€. We regret the error in the quote of your transfer. We hope to have the chance to welcome you back again very soon. Kind regards Eric C. – Manager Hotel Kaktus Playa
