The Mar Blau hotel is perfect. It is spotlessly clean and comfortable. The rooms are good and the hotel is in excellent condition. The bed is really comfortable. The food is of a very good standard and the buffet is well managed. The staff are all courteous, friendly and helpful.
I would definitely book here again. A very lovely relaxing place to stay.

This hotel is not new, but it is very well-maintained. Our room was clean and spacious with a balcony and comfortable bed. It was a 5-minute walk to the beach/centre. The staff were friendly and efficient. The pool area was very good. The breakfast buffet was good, the dinner could have been better but was OK for the price. Drinks prices were affordable.

When we booked our holiday in July this year, we couldn’t find very many English reviews for this hotel ... Now - having returned from our 10-day visit last week - we know why. There didn’t seem to be many Brits there during our stay - the majority were Spanish, French and Russian (with far fewer Germans than we expected). To be honest, this seemed to make for a more relaxed atmosphere and also gave myself and my teenage sons more opportunity to practise our Spanish ... although all the reception staff spoke far better English. (The main language in this area is Catalan but Spanish is widely spoken as well).
Some reviews of this hotel have described it as ‘run-down’ or ‘outdated’. Maybe it was a bit (the rooms weren’t particularly modern or attractive and nor was the restaurant where tables were a little close together) but that didn’t really matter to us - it depends on your priorities. Food is important to us and it would be hard to fault the choice or quality here (we went full board). My sons particularly loved the pain au chocolat at breakfast time and their favourite evening meal selection was on the Thursday which was Mexican themed night. I loved the fact that there was always one or two fish dishes offered and my husband enjoyed the variety of meat dishes as well as the desserts which were less artificial-tasting and more varied than we’d had in the past (including profiteroles, egg custard, cheesecake, yoghurt, ice-cream, moose, various cakes, fruit tart, jelly etc.) If he had one criticism I think it would be the breakfasts - although there was plenty of choice, the bacon and sausages didn’t taste great and baked beans were offered on only two occasions. Perhaps this is because the hotel wasn’t catering mainly for Brits. It also doesn’t cater particularly well for vegetarians: there were plenty of salad items and vegetables but no specific vegetarian dishes - I think this is generally the case in Spanish hotels, though. Bottled water is overpriced (we told our sons to have a large drink in the bedroom before each meal!) The staff were extremely efficient about replacing dishes and clearing tables and it was nice to see meat carved in front of the guests and omelettes and pasta cooked to order.
The reception staff were also excellent and gave us rooms next to each other as requested. The rooms were of a reasonable size and the balconies had a clothes line with pegs. The shower was good and the rooms were well-cleaned. Guests have to pay for use of both the safe and the fridge. The only English television channel was the World News but that was enough for us. The free (for one hour) wi-fi in reception would not work on my sons’ tablets, so instead they paid for a few days and felt it was worth it (although they said the internet worked better in the reception area then in the bedroom). Alternatively, there are plenty of bars around offering free wi-fi including Papa’s behind the hotel where the staff are very friendly.
Other reviewers have said they found the hotel noisy at night and I can’t argue with that - sometimes there were people partying (and shouting) outside nearby apartments until nearly breakfast-time! However, how much that affects your sleep depends on the individual - personally I find my husband’s snoring far more disruptive than any outside noise. In any case, you can always join in with Spanish siesta time later in the day.
We walked along by the beach which was very pleasant but didn’t go in the sea as we prefer the pool. This was cold - but no colder than most Spanish outdoor pools and no more crowded either. We never struggled to find poolside sunbeds or parasols for the four of us. However, sometimes we preferred to sunbathe on the excellent ‘solarium’ area on the 5th floor which has more comfortable beds and was much quieter.
The evening entertainment was of a reasonable standard. The younger children there seemed to be enjoying themselves at the mini disco and they also loved the clown show. We preferred it when the entertainment (often musical) was outside (and the view of the stage uninterrupted by those huge pillars - why do so many hotels have these in the entertainments room?!)
Drinks were reasonably priced for a hotel. My elder son loved the variety of milkshakes offered and my cocktails (5 euros) were actually cheaper here than in some of the bars. (e.g the Alcatraz which is recommended online by many Brits. We went there for a game of bingo hoping there would be a pub quiz on. However, no quiz and both bingo and the drinks were overpriced).
For those who don’t enjoy the hotel entertainment there are other things to do. Sometimes we played table tennis (having brought our own paddles and ping-pong balls) or pool (1 euro per game). One night we enjoyed a game of mini golf (1 minute walk from the hotel, costing 14 euros for the four of us). Beware, however - a round may take you up to two hours to finish - the first two holes are deceptively easy. There is also 10-pin bowling at the same location.
Perhaps the highlight of our holiday was a donkey trek at Ranxo Mestres in Santa Susanna. This was much more than a typical seaside donkey ride - it involved a very enjoyable one hour trek in a hillside forest area. The hotel reception staff were particularly helpful in arranging this for us. A minibus picked us up and brought us back and we thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience which cost us (including travel) a total of 60 euros for four.
Our other excursion - a day out in Barcelona - was less successful. We were unlucky with the weather (perfect for the rest of our stay but it poured that day) but even more unlucky that it happened to be fiesta day so all the shops were shut (fortunately not the restaurants) and the trains back finished early so we had to get a bus. (Make a note of fiesta days before you go). However Barcelona is worth a visit. The boys were impressed by Las Arenas shopping mall which has a large food court and an elevator going up the outside (you have to pay for this but there are free escalators inside) and we all thoroughly enjoyed the incredible magic fountain display, which features a stunning light and music show - easily as impressive as a fireworks display (check the times online - later in summer months). The boys weren’t keen to visit the famous church (Basilica of the Sagrada Familia) - although others have told me is extremely impressive - so we saved ourselves the expense. They quite enjoyed Park Guell (which was a half-hour bus journey from the centre).
Dalmau Park in Calella is also worth a visit (if you have young children they will enjoy the swings, climbing frames etc.) It took us a while to find this as when we asked directions no-one seemed to know (although it’s a big park!) It’s in the same direction as the shops but higher up, further away from the beach. There is a little tourist train which stops just outside the President Hotel (next to the Mar Blau) and takes you down the roads around the resort (although not as far up as the park). The shops in Calella start within a minutes’ walk of the hotel and seem to go on for ever. I bought two pairs of gladiator sandals which cost me less than £15 in total. My sons enjoyed the huge choice of ice-cream flavours on offer.
Overall we all had a thoroughly enjoyable stay at the Mar Blau and felt it definitely offered value for money.

We are a Mum & Daughter just back home in Cyprus after a nice holiday at the Mar Blau.
When we arrived, until the minute we left the staff where smart, professional, helpful and answered all our queries. Taxi's were booked for us from Girona Airport..cost Eu60 each way...40 minute drive. No Tea/Coffee facilities in the room. We up graded to 'Full Board' (called 'Full Pension') excluding drinks, for just Eu55 per person for the 10 days stay....this is great value considering the quality and amount of food, T & C available. For day trips out, if you're missing a meal ask at reception for a picnic box (order the day before). Gabi a tour rep comes to the hotel 3 times a week and is brill for all your trips out...ask at reception for her details. There's a room where the entertainment staff keep the kiddies occupied, daily one hour aquarobics, 5pm kiddies show, evening shows suitable for families....lovely atmosphere all round.
Try to book a room higher up and definitely with a pool view...take your own beach towels. Rooms, bedding, white towels exceptionally clean. Hairdrier, small bars of soap, shampoo, shower gel in bathroom. Shops (100's of them-Spanish tourist style!) are within easy walking distance. Train station 15 minute walk...Eu8.60 ticket to Barcelona. Bus station 2 minutes walk. Beach 10 mins walk.
Thanks to ALL the staff who helped to make our holiday very pleasant...
BTW it should be 4* hotel xx.

I travel a lot and I saw many hotels of 3 and 4 stars. This 3 star hotel deserves 4 stars! It is super clean, the stuff is very friendly and fluent in English, some can also speak German. The choice of food is various and it is very tasty. Rooms are very nice, clean and each has its own balcony. We had a room with a swimming pool view (most of them have it), the stuff cleans it every day and very properly. The beach is very close and is also clean. A lot of russians and germans in the hotel. The air conditioner is a bit low-powered but working. On the 2nd floor I could still catch some WiFi from lobby, so I had Internet directly in my room :)
The hotel also has a very big luggage room with a free guest shower and towels.
The train station is about 15 minutes away, but you go through the shopping street and won't be bored. Calella is in general very nice and clean city.
Minus: Whirpool and sauna are opened only for 3 hours a day (17-20) :(

The amazing staff and squeaky clean rooms are just two factors that make the mar blau hotel one of the best holidays we've ever had. the ongoing activities eg kids club and water aerobics aswell as the the many amusments (pool table, air hockey etc) make this a perfect destination for family's. but the hotel also is in close reach of all of calella's amenities such as the beach, the shops and bars. all these things together make an amazing holiday !!!!

Despite it is three stars hotel, it is much better than four stars neighbour ones, indeed. Because it is new, clean, small and its restaurant is perfect. It is not so far from a sea - it wil take 5 min to reach a beach. Friendly personell, especially Eva at the reseption. Highly recommended.
