Detailed Reviews
Loved our stay here. An amazing hotel with great staff. We stayed on a Friday night on the sleep and dine experience. Done this many times and never disappoints. Good addition to a drinks voucher much appreciated. We ate at the cenetta restaurant which always delivers good food at reasonable prices a starter, main meals and dessert very enjoyable. The royal Toby rooms are very good , large comfortable bed , good size shower. We stayed in room 16 on ground floor. We expected soon noise especially near the bins but this was not the case . We had a great sleep with no noise. We usually prefer a higher room. Would say the only thing missing in our room was a hairdryer even though a iron and ironing board was in the wardrobe. We loved our well cooked and good produce breakfast .we definitely look forward to staying again. Thank you to all the staff for their hard work.

Dear gary c, Thank you so much for taking the time to share your detailed and thoughtful review of your recent stay with us. We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed your experience and that our staff and amenities met your expectations. It's wonderful to know that you appreciated the Sleep and Dine experience and found the drinks voucher to be a valuable addition. We are also pleased to hear your positive feedback about the Cenetta Restaurant and your room, especially noting the comfort and quietness of room 16. We apologise for the absence of a hairdryer in your room, sometimes previous guests take these home and we have to wait for a new order to arrive, so we do apologise for the inconvenience. Thank you again for your kind words and for highlighting the aspects that made your stay enjoyable. We look forward to welcoming you back soon.

If you cannot avoid it and have to stay overnight in Rochdale, then the Royal Toby Hotel is certainly one of the first addresses.
The hotel is located just outside the city in a quiet area. The reception is very friendly and competent and the rooms are very neat and clean. There are plenty of parking spaces, which are kindly free of charge. The breakfast buffet is small, but all hot dishes are freshly prepared and are then also fresh.
All in all, the stay was highly satisfactory. The hotel can be recommended.

We stayed as two couples for 3 nights including Christmas Day. We were impressed with the accommodation and food, and there was a lively atmosphere in the bar, even on the evening of Christmas Day when some hotels go dark but the service at the Toby continued until after 9 pm. Staff on reception were always friendly and accommodating, even lending us an umbrella when the inevitable rain threatened a walk. Main criticism concerned noise from a neighbour to both our rooms, which disrupted our sleep on one of the nights.

On a trip to visit friends we used the Royal Toby as it was very close to our friends and was reputed to be good. When I booked the room I informed the receptionist that took my call that we required a ground floor room with walk in shower or a low step, as one of our party had mobility issues and in the event of evacuation lifts are not to be used and stairs are not an option. When we booked in the only rooms available were on the first floor and the shower was over the bath which was not an option to use.
The breakfast, which we had prepaid for, was really not up to much, I chose the full English, this consisted of a very dry burnt sausage, a very dry rasher of bacon, beans, mushrooms, hashbrown, tomato and very salty scrambled egg. My wife just had scrambled egg on toast, which again was very salty and dry toast. The second day I just had Fruit.
On a positive note, I know the hotel can not be held accountable for the action of other guests, and when a large group of people in the room above us were having a pre-party party, on my request the receptionist did have a word and the very high volume was turned down a little.
We will not be using this hotel again.

Checked into this hotel on 25th November around 9:00 PM. Having eaten on our way to Rochdale, we went straight to the room, which turned out to have a delightful view of... the hotel’s stinking bins. At checkout the next morning, we were asked to pay £18 for breakfast, which was supposedly included in the room rate. Despite pointing this out, the reception staff insisted on the payment. Pressed for time due to a business meeting, we reluctantly paid, though in hindsight, not receiving a receipt was a mistake. Imagine our shock when we later discovered a £48 charge on the credit card. After numerous frustrating phone calls, during which the person handling the case was apparently never available, we were told the charge was for a dinner we never had. The restaurant had closed before we even arrived! It took weeks of chasing and multiple threats to involve the bank before the hotel admitted they had charged us for someone else’s dinner. The incompetence and dishonesty of this establishment are staggering. How could this error happen in the first place, especially when we were made to pay for breakfast separately? This is either sheer negligence or outright scamming. This experience was compounded by the room’s unpleasant outlook and the general lack of professionalism from staff. Save yourself the stress and avoid this hotel entirely. An absolute disgrace. For well over £100 a night, I would rather sleep in my car.

Dear ch33ki69, Thank you for taking the time to share your experience regarding your recent stay with us. Please accept our sincere apologies for the frustration and disappointment you encountered during your visit. Firstly, I would like to address the issue regarding the £48 charge to your card. We deeply regret the inconvenience this caused and want to assure you that we acted in good faith throughout the investigation. Upon review, we identified that the charge was the result of a genuine human error—a colleague inadvertently entered an incorrect room number, which led to the charge being applied to your account. This oversight is unacceptable, and we have already refunded the full amount to your card. It is important to clarify that this charge was processed via a contactless payment method at the front desk. Guests are always informed of their charges and invited to review their bill at checkout. While this issue could have been rectified at the time, we take full responsibility for the error, but I want it to be known that we did not charge your card without knowledge as your review suggests. Regarding the £18 breakfast charge, we kindly ask you to email proof of payment to customercare@thedeckersgroup.com so we can investigate this matter further. As our breakfast is priced at £10 per person, the amount you mentioned is outside our standard rate. While the team member at checkout confirmed no record of a breakfast payment on your account, we want to ensure we thoroughly address your concern. If evidence of payment is provided, we will promptly issue a refund. Could you also confirm how the payment was made? Concerning the view from your room, we regret that some rooms positioned at the back of the hotel currently overlook the bins. This is an issue that we are addressing as part of our ongoing development plans. Enhancing the guest experience remains a top priority, and we are actively working on improvements to mitigate this concern. We are sorry that your stay did not meet your expectations and that our response fell short of the standard you deserve. Your feedback has been invaluable in highlighting areas for improvement, and we are committed to addressing these issues with urgency to ensure similar situations do not occur in the future. If you have any further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out directly at customercare@thedeckersgroup.com. We would be more than happy to assist you. Thank you again for your feedback

Was really looking forward to staying here for the night, didn't tell my partner where we was going wanted to keep it a surprise, I pulled up and he just said seriously you've brought me here, I told him it's all paid for so just relax and enjoy it.
We enjoyed a couple of drinks outside as the weather was nice, was nice just sat out in the sun.
Time to go to the evening meal looking forward to it, we love our food, was extremely disappointed frozen chips that you can probably make better at home they tasted frozen, the steak well we asked for well done but it was that well done it could have been used as a weapon, dry, tough needless to say we left the steak and chips. The sponge pudding I had was just like a microwave sponge pudding.
Also ignore the part where it tells you 'smart dress' in the restaurant as people walking around in cycling shorts, hoodys, tracksuits and trainers so it's not smart dress.
We stayed over the room was a tad disappointing dark and dull, I know the view from out the window can't be changed but the room could do to be brighter to compensate the view, the tv could hardly watch the signal was shocking.
Right now breakfast eggs benidict for me, all I could taste was the vinegar and one of my eggs was undercooked, the other half had a full breakfast and ate it all. I did like the fact that on the continental part of the breakfast all the jams ect was in little jars instead of plastic that you normally get.
The staff was lovely, everyone we spoke to was friendly we spoke to housekeeping right up to the general manager and everyone was nice can not fault the politeness of the staff.
My overall impression was disappointed. From growing (I'm local) was posh, but this was my first time coming and I won't be in a hurry to go back. I thought we'd be staying in luxury and be eating lovely food, think I got my hopes raised a bit to high.
Can not fault the face to face staff though they was really nice.

Return trip to the Edwardian style tea rooms at Royal Toby. We were served by the lovely Chanelle and Chloe. Everything was spot on . I m always put off by paper napkins but here we were treated to fine linen napery I asked for the hot water to be topped up in my teapot three times but from the freshness of the brew I suspect she was bringing us a fresh pot. Sandwiches well presented sans crust which is how I like them and delicious fillings with lots of relish . All home bake with fresh scones proper clotted cream and quality jams. We were having a good old chin wag so we were the last to leave from lunch clutching our doggy bags kindly provided. Excellent bar service too around a real log fire . In his book Portrait of a lady. Henry James wrote “There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea.”
I think he would have approved of Royal Toby’s ceremony to the ritual. We certainly did.

We have stayed here several times and we also got married here. This time will be our last. The beds were so uncomfortable the room was too hot and the food in the main restaurant was poor. The bar is nice and staff are friendly but when you book a sleep and dine package you expect to at least eat and sleep well

Stayed and ate here for a big family birthday. We were a big party but the restaurant staff were amazing taking our orders and bringing out food. We had a cake but forgot candles and somebody found some for us. Hotel staff were also very attentive, room was warm so I asked for a fan and was given one straight away. I would really recommend this beautiful hotel. The evening meal was excellent and so was the breakfast. A big thank you to all the staff!

stayed for 6 nights over xmas , all positive , Refurbished room on 2nd floor , a bit small/ hot as little ventilation in room or bathroom , but was offered a fan which really helped , room was a little noisy at night but it was xmas and guests retired late , very comfortable beds , all staff housekeeping/Breakfast /reception were lovely , great food in the Italian on site which is run by a very organised manageress who was so professional and lovely . only negatives were Bar is very loud at times with many non residents would be lovely to have a quiet lounge area for hotel guests only. on the whole a great experience and will return and recommend to family/friends . This Hotel is as good as it is because of the very organised and lovely team that run it ,well done all .
