Traveling in our RV, we stayed for 1 night since we could not get advance reservations in local RV parks. Plenty of space for our RV.

Room on the first floor was clean and quiet. Front desk staff was friendly and helpful. Room was $135/ night.

We had dinner in the restaurant, which was busy. Food was very good.

I spent the long July 4th weekend at the Clarion Hotel and Conference Center in Shepherdstown, WV. The hotel personnel were very professional, responsive, and courteous. I usually do not eat at hotel restaraunts because they are often overpriced with poor quality. However, Sebastiani's American Grille was surprisingly good, I was quite pleased with the quality, and I did not consider the prices excessive. The room was comfortable with no surprises. The only problem was that the number of cable television channels was very small, I would think a hotel at the level of the Clarion would have a lot more. I've had greater selections at Hampton Inns and Springhill Suites. That was the only negative; otherwise, I was quite pleased with the Clarion. Having had an awful experience four years ago with the Clarion Universal in Orlando, FL, the Clarion at Shepherdstown more than made up for it.

I almost hate to do this, but, in fairness, they deserve it.

I stayed here twice in the past 90 days, so you might think I like the place. Not really, it was a matter of necessity.

This is a really nice looking place, and the first impression is "Wow". Then you think, "Where can I park?". All the spaces in the front row are reserved or for handicapped guests I found this to be a bit strange, but I figured they must have some heavy-hitter military people who work here because they used to have some government agency housed here...I think. (I can't swear to it) Upon further investigation I found that all the prime spaces are reserved for HOTEL managers! This was confirmed to me by 2 different employees.

The more I thought about it, the more it bothered me. First of all, they have a LOT of important managers, 7 by my count. They think their managers are more important than their customers...and that attitude shows! The front row is reserved for: FDM, CFO, M & J, ADM, HR, DHO, and KFL. Are all of these VIPs more important than the guests? Apparently they think so.

Based on the quality of the rooms and facilities, the managers are not doing their jobs, and perhaps should have to park with the "common folks" and walk a bit farther to their offices.

I'd love to see a response from hotel management, and the response I would like to see is, "We have removed the special parking for hotel managers and we are truly embarrassed to have ever thought it was OK to have them."

If you're planning on staying at the Clarion you should be aware; This is not a traveler's Hotel. The primary purpose of this Hotel is to serve the Government training facility (Eastern Management Development Center) that is directly attached to the Hotel. Because of this guaranteed business, the Hotel does little to no maintenance/updating of it's rooms.

The rooms are small and worn. Some smell like smoke (ours did), others smell like mold (other guests on floor). Some of our bathroom tiles were missing grout while a lot of the grout that was there was discoloured with mold. The furniture is showing serious signs of wear and tear and I'm fairly confident that it has not been replaced since the Hotel opened over a decade ago.

The staff was neither friendly nor helpful. When we walked into the lobby we were greeted with a sign saying the pool was closed (of course this was during the recent heat wave. Later on when exploring the hotel we saw the signs posted closer to the pool which stated that the pool was closed 'By order of the Health Department'). When we checked into our room we walked in to find our Air Conditioning cover laying on the floor. The AC was also non functional. The fan worked but it was not cooling. The beds were covered with some kind of dirt and hair. We went to the front desk and the person there literally just shrugged at me and said there was nothing she could do as they were fully booked that night. Here's a protip for the Clarion staff: when a guest who checks in at 4pm has a major problem with their room, you move them to another room and have your houseman clean/fix/repair the problem room and give it to someone who checks in hours later. You don't just shrug at the guest and blow them off.

Other hotels in the area were fully booked so we were stuck. Luckily I was able to get the AC partially working by unplugging the unit and restarting it several times. The final straw was when I attempted to take a shower in the morning. I turned on the water and was immediately hit by an odor. It literally smelled like swamp water.

Broken AC. Dirt, mold, odors... The Clarion of course charged us full price for our experience. They don't even offer the most basic continental breakfast which is pretty much an industry standard for hotels that charge $120+ per night like the Clarion does.

A LETTER WE SENT TO THE MANAGER:

I am writing to make you aware of the circumstances of our recent stay at the Clarion. We were in Shepherdstown for a close friend’s wedding the weekend of July 8-10th and they recommended the Clarion to their out of town guests. We were pleased with the location as it was near to the town and the site of the reception. However, we were not pleased with some of the conditions and service we received.

Upon check-in we were given a smoking room on the third floor and as neither of us smoke, we requested a non-smoking room. Ryan at the front desk was more than happy to oblige and gave us room 103. When we arrived at room 103, we were overcome by the smell of body odor. We were not sure where this smell originated, whether it was the carpet or the walls but we did not want to stay in a room that smelled so offensive. We called the front desk and again, Ryan was pleasant and gave us room 115. This room was absolutely fine and we remained there for two nights. While at the reception, another friend of ours staying at the Clarion, also reported a problem with an offensive smell in his room and he too requested to be moved to another room.

Since we were in town for a wedding there were many festivities and we were out late both nights. On Sunday morning, we realized that we may not be ready at check-out time. My husband called the front desk and requested that we be permitted to check out a half hour later. The woman at the front desk less than courteously replied, “How about 15 minutes?” We were taken aback since we are not accustomed to a hotel that does not attempt to accommodate the needs of their guests.

Also, of note were the many parking spots for various managers, assistant managers, and assistant-assistant mangers located closest to the entrance of the hotel. Guest parking was a short walk away. It sent the message: "Welcome to the Clarion, where our guests are only second to our staff".

We are frequent travelers and we have never had an occasion to complain about the quality of service or the condition of the hotel where we stay. This time we felt we needed to make someone aware of the problems so that they may be addressed. We have not written the Clarion off completely but, I believe if given the choice in the future we would elect to stay in another hotel based on our experiences in Shepherdstown.

Wow, what a mess.

Hotel charges big city prices for mediocre performance. Entire inside needs to be gutted. Hotel looks like something out of the 1970s.

Bed had bright red mark on mattress cover, so much so that you could see it clearly through the sheet.

Internet vía wifi nearly non-existant in Rooms.

Pool and gym close at 8pm.

Staff are nice really need support of more visionary management.

Stayed here for a couple weeks on business in the area. Will try to avoid going forward.

The rooms were overall dirty. Shower curtains with dingy brown stains, vents coated in thick black dust, musty smell, etc. It wasn't the most comfortable stay. if there were a handful of visible problems I'm sure there are more I don't see.

Also coming for business I was shocked at the lack of internet connectivity. There was no high-speed ethernet available - in fact, the rooms had "modem" connections on the desks. Modems... What decade is this? Then the "free wifi" didn't work over half the time and the other half it was a 1-bar connection which disconnected constantly. Over one day it just straight-up wouldn't connect for anyone in my group. When we asked the front desk they replied "I'm not authorized to reset the internet. I could with more complaints." Poor customer service. We had different people complain to eventually hit the arbitrary amount to have the staff reset it. It then went back to its choppy 1-bar glory.

Overall, between the dirty rooms and outdated amenities I'd avoid this location if given a choice.

It's the little things that can make a difference between a pleasant stay and one where you start counting the minutes until checkout time - which is the case at this Clarion. Frankly we expected - and have gotten much better - service at other Clarions. Just a few example:

- Free wifi in the rooms, yes. One day only. The rest of the time, no connectivity, the staff shrugs. Forget the computer in the lobby, always mobbed with kids.
- Parking. As several others have noted, it was odd to see so many reserved spots for management right in front of the doors. I always thought it was the guests who were the important ones?
- Cream for your coffee, just getting that was an extraordinary struggle every morning. First morning, had to work through three separate people; second morning, no problems, just a 30 minute wait; third morning, back and forth with managers, then 2 people to bring it up! Should have taken 10 minutes, why all the hassles.
- Room service, you always have the vague feeling they're not really sure what they're doing.
- Sheets, not good when they're so worn out they constantly pull up into a wad. And then waiting hours to get another one.

That said, the grounds are beautiful, and in general the hotel is well maintained, food in the restaurants was passable and the staff has an appearance of professionalism.

But it's the little things that make or break a stay.

Stayed for 2 weeks attending a conference. The setting is pleasant. There is a wooded trail around the hotel and a nice fitness center. The center organizes power walks around Shepherdstown in the morning.

The room was clean. However, the beds were not changed for the entire 2 weeks, despite placing the placard requesting a change on the bed.

At times, there were strong cooking smells in the hall on the 2nd floor.

Service in the Rumsey Tavern could be very slow. The steaks and sandwiches were okay but none of the pasta dishes could be recommended.

I would stay here again.

My husband and I stayed at the Clarion in beautiful, lovely Shepherdstown and think that October is a wonderful time to go and visit this great location!!! The leaves were changing, the weather was beautiful and the hotel staff was great! I recommend going to the Rumsey Tavern on Wednesday evenings for Karaoke and having dinner in Sebastian's over the weekend. The Front Desk staff was exceptional and I can easily see why this hotel was named Inn of the Year and recently received the Platinum Hospitality Award. I will recommend this hotel to everyone I know and you should too!!! Great job Clarion!!!11
