The Bavarian Inn faces a mixed reception from its guests. While some appreciate the comfortable rooms and recent renovations, cleanliness is a recurring concern, with numerous guests pointing out that even the pricier accommodations lack proper cleaning. Opinions on service are divided, with accolades for staff attentiveness contrasting with complaints about unprofessionalism and delays. The infinity pool and scenic views are highlights, but calls for further updates and more consistent service are prevalent. Amidst a charming yet occasionally outdated atmosphere, many guests question the hotel's value, considering the steep room and dining costs.

We absolutely loved the Bavarian Inn for a long summer weekend getaway to the Harpers Ferry area. My 7 year old daughter adored the infinity pool overlooking the Potomac, which was not too crowded and which had a good mix of couples and families with young children. The food was also excellent, and due to covid we avoided indoor dining and ate outdoors at the resort and ordered room service several times as well. We had breakfast, lunch and dinner from the resort's all day menu and were very impressed by the quality of the food.

The room itself was spacious and clean, and I definitely recommend paying slightly more money for the Potomac view rooms, as your balcony is private and overlooks the river instead of facing inward toward the parking lot. I also suggest asking for a room on a higher floor (there are 3 total floors) and in a chalet closer to the pool, as the chalets closest to the highway might be a little noisy at night.

We also thought that the service was excellent, and appreciated that resort staff were wearing masks to protect against covid spread. Our only constructive complaint is that housekeeping seemed to be very short staffed, as it took a very long time to clean our room after we called to request same, and room service trays were left outside our door overnight despite that I called to ask for pickup. But given the hotel's recent reopening and covid policies, I understand if this is a work in progress.

Overall this is a fantastic place to spend a summer weekend, as the infinity pool is amazing and the food is terrific!

This weekend we had a most awesome wedding experience at the Bavarian Inn. It was a small wedding due to Covid-19. The staff at the Inn was wonderful from the wedding planner, to the owner, and the wait staff. All were always smiling and ready to assist and serve. I don't think any request we had was ever turned down. The food and drinks were superb. Checking into your rooms early should not be an expectation, it's understandable since disinfecting the rooms appropriately takes time. I highly recommend an outdoor wedding at the Gazebo and during Pool season the Infinity Pool is lovely (currently heated for fall).

The Bavarian Hotel and Restaurants is perched above the Potomac River in West Virginia. The view from our spacious room was delightful. The rooms are well appointed and decorated with maps and pictures of Bavaria and Germany.

The restaurant is divided into several locations including a Rathskeller and a formal dining room. The library also sometimes is a dining room. The food is excellent. Try the jaeger schnitzel. There is a good selection of wines. Service is very good.

This is an excellent location for visiting this historic area including the civil war battlefield at Antietam just across the Potomac in Maryland.

This is a very nice place but our stay on the other hand was probably the worst experience I have ever had. My wife booked here and feels like it was such a waste of money. Our room had great amenities like fireplace in room(didn’t work maintenance came out twice to fix but to no avail). Our room was where Harry Potter would stay if he came here. Under the basement stairs! It’s as if we were left down there and forgot about us. My wife ordered a cheese plate for the room but instead of presenting it in the room they gave us a plastic container with cheese and fruit like it’s from Starbucks. And they charged her a delivery fee for us taking it to our room. Room was kinda clean a little dusty but we ventured on. We wanted to get some room service for dinner and tried calling several times but no one picked up. So on the coldest day so far we had to walk to the restaurant. We asked them about it and they told us sorry but we are just really busy. Went into the restaurant not dressed the part and ordered a salmon without glaze. My wife has a soy allergy. So we waited for about 45 minutes outside by the fire pit and didn’t mind but when we got back to the room we tried the salmon and it had the glaze on it. I tried to also get ice from the machine and it was broken too (at this point it is kinda comedic.) So the guy who delivered the salmon took it back and brought us a bag of ice. We told the girls at the front desk and they again just responded with sorry thanks for telling us. Maybe next time offer up a solution like we will send some to you or there is another one in .... I hate that this was our experience on our 10 year wedding anniversary and first date night without kids in a year! So you can imagine how disappointed I am that this is what we will remember about our 10 year and the Bavarian inn. We definitely felt under appreciated and robbed of our experience and money. I will leave you on a good thing the tub! It was amazing and was the best part of our stay.

My husband and I were disappointed with our experience, especially with the online description and reviews as the rooms were quite dated. We made dinner reservations when booking the over-night as suggested and I added chocolate covered strawberries as an extra. The dining room was elegant and comfortable but it took 30 minutes to get our drinks, another 20 for the appetizer, and 30 minutes more for the entree. The food was good, but they served my salmon on a cutting board that dripped all over the table? We had a drink out at the fire pit after dinner which was really nice. When we got back to the room, our chocolate covered strawberries were nowhere to be found. We were really looking forward to a relaxing soak but the tub was filthy! I mean, disgusting! There was clumps of other people’s skin and soap scum like it hadn’t been scrubbed in months 🤢! I’d like to end on a positive note, though... the grounds were beautiful, the employees were polite and eager to help, the beer was delicious and the view, amazing!

We visited the fine dining restaurant at the Bavarian Inn as a birthday treat to my husband. The food was authentic and cooked perfectly. Dessert was served with a happy birthday message drizzled in chocolate. With two martinis, appetizers, beer and entrees we expected the bill to be much higher, so we were pleasantly surprised with the cost. Took home leftovers because the portions were very generous. Our server, Luke, was phenomenal. Definitely going to request him next time. We will also stay in the inn next time. The views and landscaping in the property alone are worth it.

My daughter’s wedding was yesterday and I booked my reservation and the Royal Suite almost 6 months ahead. The final straw, which caused me to take the time to write this review, was the day of my arrival. On the morning of my arrival I called at 9:30 am and explained if I couldn’t check in at 2 or 3 at the latest I would have to wait til after 10pm. I asked for them to take down my name and please accommodate me. They did not have my room ready at 3pm .

Then when I checked in and also when the newlyweds checked in no one gave us good directions to our rooms. We arrived late at night. It was dark and we all got lost. No one offered to help us with our luggage either.

I am a 67yo women and at 11pm I was shocked that I had to carry my suitcases down 3 flights of stairs and I ended up also being afraid I may skip and fall because there was a sign warning me that the floor was wet.

Staying at the Bavarian Inn is no longer what it used to be. When I entered the room it smelled of old age. I was also not informed that there was no housekeeping available. I found that out the next night when I got back to the room because the sign I left on the door still said please make up my room. Today one of friends who came for the wedding also told me that the worst part of their stay in Maryland was having lunch at the Bavarian Inn.

Years ago it might have been a wonderful place to come to, but my friends who stayed at the Clarion in Harpers Ferry had a much better time and even making their reservations went much more smoothly too.

Don’t waste your money at the Bavarian Inn! I work for Marriott and some of my friends own Bed and Breakfast Inns and the Bavarian Inn accommodates and customer service doesn’t even come close to any of their properties. They just are holding on to their past reputation, which for me and probably others, is no longer a valid claim.

Booked Potomac View Upper Level Premier room. Our room was actually on the second/middle of three levels (we were told at check-in [not on website] that the two higher levels are considered "upper"). We had a nice view of the river, but were afraid to spend much time on the small wooden balcony, as the railing was rotting away and loose. Plus there were tons of spider webs in and outside of the room, including a very large one right inside the entrance of the hotel. Internet was spotty.

Check-in is at 4:00 and not a minute earlier. They told us they would call us when room was ready, but never did. We finally went back to the lobby and asked if we could check in and was told we could.

They let us use the pool while waiting to check in. The pool was nice but there were not enough umbrellas. Those spots were already claimed by other guests. We were told the pool opened at noon, so didn't arrive much earlier than that. But the pool is actually open for swimming at 8 am. I think it's just the bar and food service that open at noon.

Speaking of the pool and food, you can order food to be delivered to you at the pool. Many people did so and, in fact, ate their food IN THE POOL. Not kidding! One couple ordered a sandwich and french fries. Took a bite, put hands in pool, went right back to food with pool-hands and took another bite, and so on. So, we had to swim in sandwich and french fry water. That was odd and gross to us.

Otherwise the restaurant was nice. Most of the staff was really friendly. Not sure it was all worth the money we spent, but it was good to get away overnight.

So this place is very cool and different. Infinity pool overlooking the river is tough to beat in this area. But like other people have said, if you can’t get the basic hotel cleanliness down, what are we doing here? We paid $400/nt for a balcony room and not only were the outside chairs totally gross but the inside clearly hadn’t been adequately cleaned. Bugs, cobwebs, etc. It’s really a shame because I like this place a lot. The pool staff went above and beyond with random fresh fruit skewers and scented cool towels. The brewery was tasty. But this is a 2-3 out of 5 max because if I’m paying this much you’ve got to do a better job with cleanliness.

We needed to get away and found room availability mid-week. The receptionist said that check in is at 4 but you can arrive at 12 to use the pool. The beautiful infinity edge pool overlooks the Potomac River. They social distanced the lounge chairs and created a "lawn area" with extra loungers. The pool was a nice 82F. There is a bar with 3 beers on tap and you can order off the menu too. Large restrooms and a large supply of towels are also provided. The reception had our key cards run down to the pool bartender. We picked up the keys and our room was in the adjacent Augsburg building. The room was spacious with a narrow balcony overlooking the Potomac. Although the Inn provided free bicycles to ride over the bridge to the C&O tow path, we drove over and hiked along the river. We then went to Nutters Ice Cream in nearby Sharpsburg and got pistachio and blueberry & cream ice cream which we placed in a cooler and drove back to the Inn (about 5 minutes) and ate on our balcony. We saved some ice cream in the freezer for a late night snack. Dinner was outdoors on the patio and delicious. Checkout is at noon, so the next day we had a relaxed breakfast on the patio and a couple of hours by the pool before checking out. We met some really nice people and had a great escape from the world even if for just 24 hours.

We did shorts and polo shirts for dinner, outside. Didn’t have breakfast. With COVID, distancing, masks, low occupancy rates etc attire is the least of the Inn’s problems I think.

No, it is a lovely Inn.I understand it is historic, also. I have had experience myself with the feeling of places being haunted (Harper's Ferry, for instance) but nothing of this sort at the Bavarian Inn. I agree with the previous poster who noted that the nearby Antietam Battlefield could very well have some. I know I encountered some very "interesting" experiences at Gettysburg, also. I think the scenes of such horrible battles are rife with this.

Does the hotel allow scooters for the handicapped in the hotel and rooms?
Answer from Cynthia S
Yes we do allow scooters for the handicapped, but please be aware, not all or our rooms are handicapped accessible. We do have handicapped rooms in our Schwartzwald building and one of our Chalets overlooking the Potomac is accessible. Our dining area is handicapped accessible as is our Infinity Pool, which is open from May through September. If we can answer any further questions, please don't hesitate to contact us.
