Going to Sumatra was originally not part of my Indonesia plan. As a result of googling the wrong thing, I stumbled across Rimba’s website. Immediately I jumped at the opportunity to go after making sure it wasn’t too good to be true. My decision was the correct one and resulted in a wonderful four days of relaxing paradise. The food was simple and tasty and I never lacked for things to do. As a scuba diver, I wished I could have dove the local reef. That being said, I spent roughly five hours each day snorkeling and saw many of the same fish that I had just seen in Raja Ampat. I never wanted to get out of the water and would only do so when it was time to eat or really low tide. Make sure you snorkel on the left side to see the incredible Pharaoh Cuttlefish.

Above water time can be spent walking on the beach, hiking in the jungle (the trails are very steep and slippery with leaves and roots), relaxing in the hammocks (the monkey are literally right above you) in addition to some tours. I did not take any of the tours as I was content to listen to the sounds of the jungle while in my hammock.

The huts are simple and clean. I was never hot when inside and having two individual drying lines for my bathing suits was ideal. There is electricity in the huts at night and when it rains.  I could not have asked for a better way to spend the end of my trip. I left completely relaxed and well rested before my journey back home. Many of the other travelers I met were at Rimba doing the same thing of a final location to relax before returning back to their home countries. I would go back here in a heartbeat.

Recommendations:

Make sure you bring bug spray with you as the mosquitos will seek you out.

The ocean is warm but bring a rashguard to snorkel in to help protect yourself from the sun.

You need good shoes to hike in the jungle. It is very, very slick when coming down.

The sambal at dinner is very flavorful and if you use it all, ask nicely and they will bring you more (our table “fought” over the extra as it was so tasty).

Pack a poncho or rain coat in case it rains.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend this Eco Lodge. It truly is a piece of paradise. Top job on being the forerunners on how to care for the environment - I am sure this will soon be a role model to others in Indonesia. Great value for money with the 3 meals and snorkeling gear included.

The location of the lodge is sensational, right by the sea, with rainforest directly behind it. The bungalows are functionally equipped, the mosquito net could do with a wash. The beach is relatively narrow and the reef begins immediately in the water, so bathing shoes are very useful.
The breakfast is great, lunch and dinner could do with a bit more Indonesian spices

We were only at the actual lodge overnight (for 4 nights) but the air-conditioned room with mosquito net was a wonderful respite from the incredible heat and humidity. We spent our days (from dawn to dusk) on the Rimba Queen (riverboat from the lodge), plying the river in search of wildlife and taking occasional walks. The cook on the boat, Sanah, made the most delicious meals and snacks, the boat crew were really good and the guide, Hakim, and his assistant, Aris, were outstanding. We heard other guides and visitors talk excitedly of 7 orangutan sightings one day. We saw 15 different orangutans that day and 9 on each of the other days. Our duo's spotting was superb and the boat captain did his utmost to position the unwieldy riverboat for best views.

I had one night at this magical place! Such a charming and cosy place to relax and just be with Nature close to the sea! The bungalows were so cute and had all the facilities I needed and with the most stunning view over the coral reef. The owner and staff were so friendly and the food very delicious. The price was fair and everything was lovely.

A lovely place to relax, snorkel and read books and just be united with Nature!

Beautiful spot, accommodation is ok, no luxury here.. staff are very nice, food is ok, prepare to get wet on the boat.. lol. Love dogs around and one very loud cat. 🐈 be aware of leaches on the jungle hike, but I guess it’s the norm.. overall our experience was good. Serving beer is always a plus in Indonesia.

We took our family visiting from the U.S. to Rimba, hoping to show them another side to Indonesia than the big durian. Unfortunately, the boat trip there was a disaster with stormy weather, a wave that drenched all our clothing and luggage, and seasickness. Upon arriving at the beach we were not greeted and had to wait a while to figure out where we were staying which unfortunately we of found out was all lumped together with our children in too few beds. The management was not there at all and the quality of service and food was frankly quite appalling. The staff smoked continuously in the common area, causing a severe allergic reaction in one of our guests and asthma for our kids. The food deteriorated alarmingly both in quality and quantity with all we ate there in 6 meals being boiled vegetables, white rice, eggs, a bit of tofu, and banana pancakes in various combinations. We witnessed no less than three capsized boats in attempted landings and launchings and had to help rescue these on all 3 occasions.
On a positive note, the location is very beautiful and isolated though snorkeling is not as fun or easy as some make it seem due to close and sharp coral. If what you crave is rustic isolation and frugal subsistence level food, this could be a great place to sit on a rough bench and look at nature but be aware that this could be more hard core than you expect.

Response from RimbaProject, Owner at Rimba Ecolodge
Responded 22 Jun 2015
Dear Joshua, You sent me an email in January to complain about your stay at Rimba Ecolodge and I already answered, apologizing for everything even the bad weather, which was, you will certainly agree, a bit ridiculous. I do really wish for you to understand that we are not responsible for the bad weather and its consequences (wet clothes, seasickness, difficult supplying). Indeed, you came during a storm that lasted for a whole week. I hope that you will understand that since the only way to our location is over the sea, I cannot put at stake the life of my employees just to go food shopping. The fishermen likewise cannot work during a storm, which means that we had nobody we could have bought fresh fish from. We are truly sorry that your stay did not meet your expectations. Still, as a reason for the possible rudeness of the staff, we would like to signal the fact that it was hard for them to introduce themselves properly under the heavy rain, while helping you to come safely ashore, carrying your luggage and stabilizing the boat of the person who brought you to us. All of it as quickly as possible so that you would not have to wait too long outside. You have certainly contributed to save the first boat that was sinking (which, we would like to explicit, was not ours) and we are very grateful to you for helping the man who transported you to save his working tool. We do also thank you for the second time you help to pull our boat on the shore in order to prevent it from sinking. As for the third time though; when our boat sank during the night, I am glad that you did not take part to the rescue, since it was far too dangerous. By the way we would like to thank our staff and my husband’s father for their devotion. They actually risked their lives to try to save our craft by swimming more than one hour in the middle of the night in a raging sea. Unfortunately they did not succeed. The management, meaning my husband and myself, were not present and we are sorry about it. Still, it was the first time in 3 hard work year that we had been able to take two weeks vacation to visit my family in France. We hence think that it was not exaggerated for us to take two weeks free time every three years. Then you say that you were “all lumped together with your children”. We really cannot understand this assertion for you had been provided with one double room per couple and, just as you had asked by email, one room for all the kids who wanted to sleep together. This last room was equipped with a big sized bed (2 meters bright) as well as with and extra bed (exactly as we had agreed by email too). It is true that you asked the staff not to smoke in the restaurant. They respected your request and did not smoke in the open-space anymore in your presence. We honestly apologize for the disagreements caused by the smoke. Concerning the snorkelling, we do not have the pretention to have the best spot in Indonesia. However, considering the damages suffered by the reefs through destructive fishing ways, ours is in a good state. We have worked very hard for two years to protect the bay and we do see a great amelioration. In any case, no matter whether good or bad state, snorkelling with a very bad weather does not allow oneself to observe much of the marine life. Once again, all our excuses for everything, but it seems that you were at the wrong place at the wrong time. Wrong time because of the storm and wrong place because it seems that you were expecting the same comfort as in a higher-class hotel. However, you will surely understand that with a 15-euro rate per night we cannot possibly offer the same service as in luxury resorts. The core concept of our establishment is to protect the nature and to foster the local market, by using local material and work labour. Thus, if the kind of hotel you look for belongs to a more modern type I can recommend you the Cubadak Paradiso Resort that is located in the same area and would surely meet your expectations. Still, even with their 120-euro rate they probably wouldn’t be able to guarantee you a shining sun. We would like to thank once again the staff who did as good as they could during this difficult stormy week, filled with stress, hard work conditions, dangerous situations and too short nights. Sorry that you disliked your stay that much. We do hope that your next holiday will be more comfortable and sunny. Best regards, The direction of Rimba Ecolodge

Warning to all visitors. The proprietor of this incredible establishment is about as welcoming as glandular fever.

The place itself is amazing with gorgeous sunsets, a sandy beach and brilliant snorkelling areas. However, Nad (the owner) made us, and several other couples there feel more like a necessary inconvenience than paying guests.

Would consider returning to this beautiful place once proprietor cheers up a bit

Hello, sorry if you didn't find me enough warm welcoming, enthusiastic or too weary, but you have to understand that although I am the owner I am also a human being, and as every human, I'm sometimes not at my best form. Indeed, I'm pregnant for 3 months and it is needless to explain that since 2 months I have nausea, dizziness, and a very great fatigue. I know that as owner I should not show signs of weakness and be always smiling and cheerful, but sometimes it is very difficult. Of course, you could not know it since it can not yet be seen and I do not receive my guests telling them that I am pregnant because it is my private life. From my opinion i do not have to justify myself, but because you seem to be very disappointed I would add that this month (October), we had a lot of troubles that have added to my stress (actually not only me but also my husband and my staff cause it's very important for us to give the best we can to our guests): broken water pump, loss of Internet connexion, broken solar panels, broken generator, boat engine failure... and broken fridge 4 days ago :( You know, yesterday my husband was not really smiling and talkative too, but he doesn't have to justify himself by explaining to our guests that his uncle just died in the morning. People have to understand and accept that nobody can be cheerful 365 day per year even if they try, even if they own an hotel or a guesthouse... because everybody has his own private life, with his own problems... and i think that's normal. I admit that it is very strange for me to have to write publicly here that I'm pregnant while even some of my friends and my family don't know it yet, in order to explain my state of health and justify my behavior to my guests. I'll never have imagined having to do that by opening a guesthouse. We hope that apart from this, you liked your stay at Rimba Ecolodge and spent nice time. In your comments you seem to have liked everything except my behavior. If this is sincere, then allow me to find your rating a little severe. Thanks for your understanding. Best regards

We stayed for four nights at the eco lodge and we really enjoyed it very much.

The bungalows are very simple but absolutely enough, you do not need more. They are tidy and clean and built up with love. Every bungalow has a little terass were you can sit and watch the ocean and the great sundowns.

The beach has a smooth sand, but for swiming you should bring some water shoes because there are corals everywear under water and you can cut your feet. But therefore you only need some snorkeling equipment and walk 5 steps into the ocean and you see dozens of different colorfull fishes and corals and clams. We found some see turtles a mini hai and much more. The water is so warm you do not need any further diving eqipment, but be carefull because you easily get a sunburn.

Nadeges food was relatively simple and we often had fish but it always was tasty and fresh. Her juces are absolutely tasty! As I tested many juces during our stay in indonesia i can say Nadeges were the best!

Nadege and Reno are absolutely nice and both of them speak english.

if you like a really peacefull area were you have a beach of your own this place is perfect!

With the description from Nadege you can get there very easily from Padang airport.

For us it was the final stop during our holiday in indonesia and we really liked it very much. So you can relax perfectly there, you need no watch and nothing exept a towel a toothbrush and your bathing clothes. The food is prepared automatically and if you want something you just tell someone and you get it.

We are planing to come back there to hide away once more.

This lodge was opened in October 2013 and is run by a very friendly French-Indonesian couple. There are only few bungalows and the place is very quiet. The beach is beautiful with mangroves and views for sunset. The bungalows are simple but built very nicely anf are kept very clean. Food and drinks are excellent and they also cater for vegetarians! The place is also great for snorkling as there is a large variety of fish and also sea turtles to see. It is only 15mins by boat from Pagang. They organise boat trips to the neighboring islands for good value. Marak is in particular to recommend, where we were the only ones at the beach for the entire day.
