We chose to stay at the Outrigger for our first Hawaii trip. We were not disappointed. Our garden view room included a beautiful view of the ocean. We slept with our sliding door open to hear the waves roll in during the night. Staff was...More
Me and my gf were very impressed with this hotel. We had originally booked a 'Garden studio' room, which we assumed just looked into the mountains, but found out once we checked in we had gotten a room with an ocean view. The travel agent...More
We have stayed on Maui many many times. This was our first stay at the Royal Kahana. This is a great hotel for the money. There are many nicer hotels on Maui but none in this price range. It is in a great location just...More
Stayed at the Royal Kahana March 30 - April 11, 2013 with two boys (ages 12 and 15). This oceanfront building is situated on the Kahana Beach along with three other properties that are also oceanfront. We stayed in a 2 bedroom/2.5 bath condo oceanfront...More
My husband and I got married on this property 10 years ago overlooking the ocean. We came back to celebrate our anniversary and wanted to stay in the same place. I read the reviews on here and some were not very good. I contacted Outrigger...More

We booked directly through Royal Kahana after signing up for their e-mail club. They offered special limited time deals at 40% off. We arrived before check in time and asked if we could look at the two units that were available before making a decision. Although the rooms weren't yet cleaned and ready to go, the front desk allowed us to take a look. We ended up in a roomy 1 bedroom condo with a beautiful ocean view.

There were lots of restaurants in Lahaina. My husband and I prefer laid back fast casual dining so, for the most part, we stuck with value conscious choices. We enjoyed Aloha Mixed Plate for breakfast and lunch, Maui Tacos, Teddy's Bigger Burgers (which also served a killer grilled fish sandwich).
We did visit Mama's Fish House, which is insanely expensive but definitely deserving of a visit. The property is gorgeous, the service completely embodied the spirit of Aloha and the food was superb. We also went to Old Lahaina Luau. It is highly rated and the show alone was worth the expense.
There are also lots of quaint little restaurants in Paia, a little surfing town on the other side of the island that serves as a starting point for the Road to Hana. Get yourself a CD called R2H if you drive the Road to Hana and start early to avoid traffic. We ordered our CD off Amazon before we went. It covers all the points of interest as you're driving. Most of the sights on the R2H are not well marked and this CD tells you what is ahead by mile marker. If you're adventurous (you'll void your rental car contract if you break down) continue past Hana and take the (sometimes washed out, unpaved) Pilani Hwy back through Kula to return. There were few people or cars but amazing scenery, even if it was a little bit scary. Driveable but not for the faint-hearted.
We also took a bike ride down Haleakala available through Haleakala Bike Company. We opted for the less expensive "Express" option, which drops you off with your bike at the starting point at around 9am, gives you directions for your turns and asks that you have the bike back to them by 4:00pm. As we headed up the mountain, we were a little apprehensive about being by ourselves but once we got started, I wouldn't have done it any other way. Exhilarating!
Our favorite snorkeling spot was Kapalua Beach. Great facilities, nice beach and easy access snorkeling in clear water. Plus it's only 2 or 3 miles away.
Have fun and safe travels!
