Stayed at the Mark Hopkins whilst on vacation with my wife and daughter. I booked a club lounge room for the convenience offered by breakfast. Before we arrived, Issa from the front desk offered an upgraded room which we accepted. Upon arrival, Issa checked with me to ensure everything met expectations. I am happy to say that they were surpassed!

We loved our stay. The room was great. The staff were exceptional including Issa (already mentioned), Ben in the Club Lounge (efficient and friendly) and Charlotte in the Top of the Mark.

I read some reviews claiming the hotel was tired. Rubbish, It is a San Francisco icon and maintained very well.

Will recommend and hopefully return one day!

Our son paid for two nights at the Mark Hopkins as a Christmas present for us. We had a wonderful stay. The accommodations are clean, comfortable and well appointed. The towels are plush and the bathroom is roomy with plenty of space for your personal items. Although we were only on the third floor, our room faced the Courtyard and Mason Street so we had a lovely view and we could see the Cable Cars roll by from our window. We could hear some street noise from our room but it wasn't loud enough to disturb our sleep. We took full advantage of the hotel and enjoyed breakfast in our room both mornings. The food arrived exactly when we requested and it was hot and delicious. The coffee was especially good and the bowl of fresh berries was ample enough for both of us! We enjoyed going upstairs to the Top of the Mark for an evening drink both nights and enjoyed dancing to the band and people watching. You might not think about traveling to San Francisco in the Winter but it is a wonderful time to visit. Generally the daytime temperatures are not much cooler than a foggy summer day and the hotels and restaurants are quieter. We had a fun Winter getaway in San Francisco!

Two nights (Thursday Friday) whilst in SF on transit home to Australia after a night in Napa Valley.

We booked this on a Qantas Hotels special, it was well priced for its location etc

The Good:
Great Location! Cable Car out front, easy walk to Union Square, Chinatown and all of the downtown facilities.
Staff were lovely.
The room was a great size, all of the facilities available (but strangely no free Wi Fi was offered)
Top of the Mark bar! Best location to watch the Fog roll in at night
Good Price

The Bad
The rooms are "tired" - curtains don't close properly, don't track properly
Furnishings are all nice but very "traditional" - looking dated.
Common areas are all in good condition, but all (again) "dated"
We have stayed in other Intercontinental hotels that were certainly better
Worst Pillows ever. Thin as anything!
We requested a room with a view, the view was "sliver" of the bay

Would I recommend it, yes, at the right price for its location etc, not for a luxurious experience. Its a Hotel. Not a sumptuous hotel.

Does it need a refurbishment? Yes, it does. But at the same time, the ageing decor is one of the things that gives the hotel so much character. Located two blocks away from Grace Cathedral, on California Street, with easy access to the cable cars and a short but steep walk down to Union Square, central San Francisco is all within easy reach.

The hotel has a grand, almost stately reception area which attests to the history of the property. Check in was smooth and efficient.

My room was spacious, part overlooking California Street. The bathroom was also a good size, with a shallow bathtub/shower combination. As I mentioned before, the decor is certainly from a past era but comes full of charm.

Breakfast was served at the Nob Hill Club restaurant. I found it to be a little disappointing. There is a decent selection of cold and warm food at the buffet, however, they did not cater for special dietary requirements. When I asked the staff if they had any gluten-free bread, I was quickly told that they did not.

On the other side of the spectrum, the Top of the Mark is an absolute highlight. Open to both residents and visitors, there is live music in the evenings and the staff are extremely friendly and helpful. The menu consists of drinks and some light snacks. Above all, you get excellent panoramic views over the city.

It was a thoroughly enjoyable stay and although I would like to try other hotels when I return to San Francisco, this will certainly remain an option I will consider again.

I would never recommend anyone to stay here. I have stayed at $10 hostels in Europe that have better accommodations than this hotel. On our first night, we were put in a room with two double beds. The mattresses on these beds were completely slanted and hard as a rock which made sleeping a grueling and painful task. We then requested to move rooms due to the beaten down nature of the mattresses. They showed us 3 additional rooms, all with slanted KING mattresses. All of the king mattresses in this hotel concave inwards and are not even remotely comfortable, and the double bed options are a laugh as well. If you want a good night of sleep, look elsewhere. This place was literally hell. On top of this, they only had 1 working elevator during a PANDEMIC. These elevators only fit 4 people maximum, and they had no stairs accessible. Getting down to the lobby at any time of day proved to be a horrible and long excursion which often resulted in an over-packed elevator during a global pandemic. The staff here did not go above and beyond to make sure we had a good stay here. All of our issues were met with blatant indifference. When we had to switch rooms, they deactivated the incorrect key cards (we were staying with family) and were unapologetic for this as well. You also have to reserve housekeeping a day in advance in order for them to service your room. If you don't reserve it, they will not come to your room to clean it.

We usually stay at the Mark Hopkins arround St Patricks Day every year and always enjoy the stay. Nice rooms with all the amenities and good WiFi. Really friendly staff as usual this year but sadly I was not as impressed with the overall experience as i have been in the past.
The hotel has a lovely solid traditional feel about it but I think it needs to be freshened up a bit.
A number of years ago they stopped the amazing buffet breakfast in the famous Top of The Mark Restaurant and moved it to the ground floor location. That was fine. But this year there was no buffet at all and it was replaced by an Al le Carte offering. It was explained that because of the low occupancy due to the Coronavirus they could not justify the buffet. Fair enough, but the alternative was just too expensive. I was even more dipleased when I was charged extra for tea and again for refills. Since tea and coffee would have been freely available with the buffet, I think to offer it, coffee and juice as included in the breakfast price in the circumstances would have been nice.

The InterContinental Mark Hopkins hotel is both charming and iconic, exuding a very cool classic elegance, from the Sinatra tunes playing in the lobby to the signature martinis enjoyed from the Top of the Mark. The professionalism and attentiveness of the staff was second to none. Each and every member of their exceptionally hard-working team made our stay wonderful. Firas was particularly helpful and accommodating, greeting us warmly and making the check-in process an absolute delight, going above and beyond to ensure we enjoyed our visit! We were lucky enough to stay in a beautiful corner suite, which was tastefully decorated, nicely appointed, quite spacious and boasted exquisite views. We loved the location of Nob Hill, a very safe neighborhood that was centrally located with plenty of top restaurants within walking distance. The service at the Mark Hopkins was of a very high standard and we will absolutely be sure to return time and time again. Thank you for such a wonderful experience!

The Mark Hopkins Intercontinental Hotel is a true gem in San Francisco but does not come without their finance flaws. 30 minutes drive by taxi from SFO airport or an hour by BART train and then a cable car from Powell Street Station, location is very central in SF but is right at the top of the SF famous hills from all directions. Luckily, the cable car (a must for any visitor) stops right opposite the hotel or just down the street depending on where you are approaching from and local Uber taxis are cheap too. Now, yes this hotel is old, it even has its own museum, but the historic features are amazing to see and any complaints of the hotel being run down are unfounded in my opinion. This is not a modern brand hotel, this is a super clean, historic Art Deco style hotel with a lot of character. I liked it a lot. The room was ok in size with all of the old traditional features, perfect as a base for exploring but not if all of your time will be room based. Nothing special offered for birthdays here but otherwise a nice room with TV, Fridge, AC and good views of high up. A must visit is to the Top of the Mark bar, again with its own museum piece and history, an amazing cocktail bar with views to match and lovely friendly staff. Expensive but worth a short visit. Breakfast was fresh to order, friendly and attentive staff and good value if included in your room rate. Again with iconic views of the cable cars passing outside. Biggest issue here was check out, bill was incorrect, so make sure you check it. Inclusive breakfasts was added onto the final bill (not good for us), gratuities missed off (not good for staff), and even a lunch was added for a time when we was visiting LA miles away. Receptionist seemed pretty unsympathetic about the bill issues and took a long time to rectify them, and was not able to examine receipts to verify our correct bill total. Although the bill was eventually adjusted, I was told it would be investigated after I had departed for the UK. Not a great end of hotel stay experience. Otherwise a very good base for visiting San Francisco Bay.

We spent a couple of nights at the hotel whilst helping our daughter to move to the city. The staff were their wonderful helpful selves as usual, whilst being very conscientious of the current health concerns. Requests for extra pillows and blankets for our room were promptly addressed. Breakfast was busy, but again the staff ensured areas were sanitized, and did ask for proof of vaccination status before seating guests. Although the hotel was busy (it was Labor Day weekend) all staff and guests I saw were masked. We had to unexpectedly call for our vehicle more frequently than we expected, but the forecourt staff were prompt and courteous in assisting us. We were exhausted from our exertions, and so weren't up for evening drinks, but were pleasantly surprised to see a steady number of patrons heading up to the Top of the Mark...next time we'll head that way!

We arrived early, but was happy to find that a room was available, We decided to splurge and upgrade from a Jr Suite to a full one bedroom. we were placed on the 17th floor. The room was outstanding. a full living room. Dining room with 3 chairs. the bedroom had a second TV, and the bathroom had an enormous Jacuzzi tub, in addition to a regular stand up shower. There were 3 closets, one with a safe inside.

We happened to be in San Francisco, during a wildfire event, so the air quality was not great. (Although to be honest, we never smelled anything, and our eyes / throats were not affected). We had Dim Sum at Yank Sing, on their open terrace.
Due to the pandemic, not a lot was open, but we made the most of it, and walked and walked (Wear good shoes!)

Because of this, we spent a lot of time in the room lounging.. We were so comfortable. Cleaning was by scheduled appointment. When we came back the room was spotless.

At this time no Bathrobes or Slippers. They woud have been welcomed, but can understand wanting to limit the touch-points.

Masks were worn by staff, and all customers in the common areas. I felt very safe.

All in all, we were very pleased with our stay. Would return to this hotel in a heartbeat.

We took Uber. The cost would cost about $30 -$40 depending on time. Most hotels do not cover transfer service to the airport. An easy email to the hotel should provide an answer.
