Any hotel can tick the boxes - polite staff, properly prepared rooms, etc.
HGU goes above & beyond at every opportunity to assure my stay is best possible.
Proximity to Penn Sta, restaurants, subway a bonus. Looking forward to seasonal opening of the roof top lounge
Its why I book my every NYC stay there, whether business or holiday or weekend getaway.

My partner and I needed a clean place to stay during Covid-19 that was in a good location. HGU was very accommodating and provided all the information we needed. Staff took all the necessary health and safety precautions and disinfected the elevator and hallways. Very appreciative of them for providing a safe space during Covid-19.

There is a lot of construction work going on around the hotel however it was easy to find and location is great, close to metro/railway and walking distance to many excellent locations. Where it fell down for me is that I found the staff cold and asking a simple question felt like an imposition. This was just before the shut down which happened a week later and we were all getting concerned about what was happening, but a friendly face would have been very welcome.
As I was working across time zones, I checked the room documentation to make sure i could get a meal/drink later at night but when I went down they told me that it wasn't open and that the documents had not been updated. Daylight savings was to start and a note was there that staff would change the clock, but they did not. Not a big issue but luckily i wasn't relying on the clock in the room or the alarm. I changed it myself. It's a really cute boutique hotel with a rather scary old elevator but the staff made me feel unwelcome, perhaps because I'm not 35 - I don't know.

We booked this hotel for our honeymoon and we're excited about the stay however, the experience was slightly underwhelming.
The location is great, you can get most places with ease either walking or using public transport. The staff were friendly and helpful and I have to say the bed was one of the most comfortable beds I have slept in. Unfortunately that is where the positives end.
The pictures are exaggerate the size of the rooms, the bed took up most of the space and there was no mirror on the dressing table. We had to ask for robes, new towels as they were stained and a new hairdryer as the one I had, had no chance of drying my hair. The bath and shower needed an upgrade and the water pressure was pretty much nonexistent. There needs to be some improvement or a better reflective price.

Below is a copy of the email sent to the hotel the first morning of my stay. The heat was never fixed, the coffee issue was promised to be handled and was ignored. The staff at this place does not get it. I would avoid this property at all cost.
Good morning. I write this from room 908 in your hotel. First, thank you for the upgrade. Unfortunately, it will not overcome my disappointment in your hotel. When I checked in, I noticed there were only two breakfast certificates for my room while I am traveling with my wife. When I questioned that, I was told that “that’s all we can do, sorry”. Gee thanx! When we got to the room, we noticed no coffeemaker. I questioned that and was told that there was free coffee in the lobby. So, instead of having coffee in my robe, I had to get dressed this am at 5am, to go downstairs and find out you don’t have coffee until 7am and I had to walk two blocks to get it. I gets worse, the heat does not work in our room. It is set at 80 and is blowing cool air. I asked it be checked while we were at dinner last nite, either it was not or it cant be fixed. Lastly, there is not outlet for my computer on your desk without crawling under it and unplugging the lamp. Bottom line, as a Globalist, I will indicate to Hyatt (copying my concierge here will share this as a review when Hyatt asks) that this hotel is not fit to carry the name. If I were not so busy today, I would switch hotels and I certainly wont be back. Thank you for listening, Joe

We kept not having warm water in the shower and the front desk staff came with the same answer- we will send an engineer. When asking again following day about the issue they didn’t know what it was and wether it was solved. This continued for a few days. Our room was also close to the elevator which when opening makes a loud beeping sound which often woke us up. The airco was faulty as well and we had problems regulating the temperature so as not to freeze or cook.

I didn't feel like I was staying in a 4-star hotel. I booked for a week and things were weird since day 1.

The general atmosphere was weird. My room was dark, even with the lights on.

Because of the pandemic, the restaurant and rooftop are closed. You can't eat breakfast there but they do offer coffee in the morning, starting at 7am. However, for 3 days in a row, there was no coffee at 7:30 or 8:30 am??

The smell on my floor (3) was horrible on my first day there. I complained about it and I don't know if they did anything. It was a mix of smoke/cigarette/animal smell. Not pleasant at all. That smell came back during the week. The hallway was dirty for 2 days, nobody ever cleaned it.

No cleaning service because of the pandemic, which I don't completely understand but on their paper, it says it's because they could not rehire everyone. I do hope that the common areas were cleaned, but I personally never say anyone cleaning.

I did have my mask down once, while waiting for the elevator, as I was talking to my daughter. I got yelled at by the receptionist, asking me to wear my mask in a very aggressive and cold way. Again, that doesn't highlight the fact that you are staying in a 4-star hotel....

Whenever you ask for something that is missing, it's always someone's else fault. I was using a stroller all week and the door is not practical for strollers. There is a bell outside to call for assistance, nobody ever came.

All in all, I didn't like this hotel.

The location of our hotel as it was only a couple of blocks from the Empire State building a few more from Times Square and Madison Square Garden, and and about 10 blocks from Rockefeller Centre. The hotel was very nicely done throughout, and the staff were very friendly. However we had a Queen standard room but it was tiny. I know the pictures on hotel websites are often slightly deceiving. But there was only a foot either side of our bed and then three feet at the foot of the bed comma and then the bathroom. The bathroom was really good size in the shower pressure was really good. And it was all very nice two day out. But but the small wardrobe was mostly taken up with the standard extortionately expensive hotel minibar fare, which we obviously weren't going to use as why would anybody do that ($5 for a 25g chocolate bar, are you insane?!). So we would have appreciated having more efficient storage space considering there was practically no floor room to walk, let alone put our bags. There is also the issue of the only place to stand being right in front of the door, which meant if you had come out of the bathroom to get dressed and the person you were travelling with came into the room from the corridor, you were basically exposed to anybody walking by.
Appreciated the complimentary coffee in the lobby every morning though, as it's nice to walk out of the hotel and begin your tourist day with with a hot brew.
I don't know if I'd stay here again, as although we really did just sleep in the room and spend very little time there, I don't really appreciate such tiny accommodations for the money. But then I guess that's probably just a New York thing where every hotel room is tiny unless you're willing to pay $300 a night.

I have temporarily relocated from NYC to Florida for the Fall/Winter but had to come back for business and discovered this luxury boutique hotel. I actually cannot believe that I did not know about this hotel. It is chic and hip in a beautiful landmark style building. The contemporary art touches in the decor are super sexy. Location is also great. Located north east of Madison Square which means you are close to Madison Square Garden, Times Square and a brief commute or taxi ride downtown or uptown, east or west. I walked almost everywhere when the weather allowed. That is the beauty of the city and this location. Unfortunately, the restaurant and lounges were closed due to CV-19 but I cannot wait to return to experience the restaurant and lounge which read like a fashionable artsy private club. Totally my vibe!! I've been telling my friends about this place nonstop since my arrival. Lol! PS: I judge every establishment by the quality of their drip coffee. HGU did not skim on that either. The drip coffee served in the a.m. was excellent drip coffee. My room was perfect. I had a Queen Deluxe I believe. The bathroom was surprisingly spacious and very nice subtle industrial style fixtures. Anyways, I could go on. If you are traveling during these odd times or just need a break from your living situation, this is the best cost value right now!! I am a fan!!

HGU was lovely. Clean and good size room (well the king room we had was). Location is perfect - easy walking distance of 2 mins to cafes, convenience stores, pharmacy, Empire State was 5 mins away, 15-20 mins walk to Times Square, wicked location !! A little expensive - but that’s likely a AUD vs USD issue.
