We were there the last 3 days in October last year (2017.) We are also experienced mountain and snow drivers (CO Rockies, WY Tetons) but were so glad we rented a Yukon 4WD. Even some of the main roads going out of town were a bit "ify", and when it was snowing, the roads were not cleared or treated, it was hard to even see the turn off to the Lodge let alone climb the incline to the Lodge. The roads were in bad enough shape one night, Mok even cancelled his nightly tour, and did not come up to the Lodge that night. We felt the Yukon was up to the task, but we were glad we were not in a smaller, less weather equipped vehicle. Be sure to make a grocery stop in town before you head up to the lodge!

We booked the all inclusive at the Borealis Lodge and really you couldn’t get better food anywhere! It was really healthy and delicious every time. Prepared by professional chefs. We didn’t rent a car and did lots of the activities but the all of them included transport pick up and the drivers know the territory and conditions and we always felt very safe.
