I totally agree with all the positive comments made by other guests. The Berner is a lovely hotel in a great location, less than 100m from the nearest piste and a 5 minute walk from Zell shops/bars etc. The food, service, cleanliness and staff were all first class and it was a bonus to ski with Christophe Berner on Monday morning (he skis with guests every Monday morning although you will need to be able to ski black runs). We picked a very busy week - w/c 26th Feb as it was Dutch half term and the lift queues were at times 20 minutes! If I return to Zell then I would definitely stay at the Berner although not that week!

For our 5th Trip to Zell we choose to stay at the Berner and have nothing but praise for the hotel. From the initial welcome late on a Saturday evening by one of the owners, through to our departure, I have only positive things to feedback. Check out the pictures on their website for the traditional decor/style of the bedrooms, restaurant, lobby/bar area the engendered a relaxing ambience. The spa and relaxation area is much more contemporary styled with very comfy loungers. Towels, robes and slippers provided of course.
Food :- Each 5 or 6 course evening meal (pre selected the day before) was always well prepared and presented. There was always the choice of meat, fish or vegetarian mains. The staff were also excellent at helping my diabetic wife enjoy a desert every night by preparing a dish with no extra sugar and / or sweet fruit sauces.
Breakfast was as expected, with good range of cereals, juice, boiled eggs, cold buffet etc. The hot options a little more limited than in other hotels we have been to in Zell area.
Afternoon snack was a range of cakes.
We had a good size room on an upper floor with a balcony and lake view. It had a good bathroom, plenty of storage for bags and clothes, kettle with t&c options. The cleaning team did a good job all week. So again only positive feedback again.
Its location is very close to the City Express lift and postplatz bus station. Just a 5 minute walk to both and no more than 10 mins into the heart of Zell town. The hotel is advertised as ski in/out and factually that its true. However that access is onto a steep slope area that is only suitable for good skiers. So we did not use this access, but finished at the city express and walked around a block and back.
Staff :- ALL very personable and friendly whilst going about their various tasks.

First the welcome from the owner and staff set the right tone for the holiday. All were very helpful and attentive you could not fault them even the cleaning staff always had a smile and kind words. The location could not be better, close to the town to be quiet, close to the local bus station to get travel connections and very close to the ski lifts to gain access to the mountains. The holiday came with a free travel pass which covered the busses, trains, ski lifts and the boat. The food each day was a 6 course meal with a great choice, again we could not fault any meals. breakfast was a buffet style with something to keep everyone happy. There were cakes available between 3-5pm each day without charge.
The hotel had an outdoor heated pool and indoor sauna facility which we made use of each day.

I would not hesitate to stay here again excellent all-round hotel.

Our 7th time in Zel am See but only our first time at Hotel Berner . The best so far.
Really handy for the village, ski in ski out - must be all of 30 yards from piste to hotel!.
Facilities very good, outside heated pool. sauna, steam room all of highest standard. The ski room was warm and large enough. The food better than average and not boring I had ice cream with rocket and balsamic - fabulous!. The accommodation was very good Best of all were the staff, from the management to the maid all very friendly and very efficient. The friendly atmosphere of an evening was very conducive to guests mixing well . The prices in the bar were very good value indeed, also drinks upon arrival, pre dinner drinks one evening . I know where we are going next year

Skiing trip for one week with the "Winter Sport package" including Half board.

Very nice hotel, and unquestionably, the most attentive and familiar service I have ever experienced in any hotel.
Just one example of many: First night, I folded up my pillow as i normally prefer a firm headrest - the next day, there were two pillows in my bead, without even asking for it...

The brothers Berner and the staff are creating a familiar atmosphere, always asking how you are, how the day has been etc. Any question is sorted swiftly, and from the first day, the full staff will know who you are and which room you are in - so no feelings of "i'm just another paying guest" here...

Food is outstanding! Every night you have a 5 course dinner, which you choose in the morning at the breakfast table. Don't forget to bring a shirt or two for the evening dinner (and the gala dinner on sunday), so you can honor the Berner's effort of making your stay something out of the ordinary.

Spa area is excellent - nothing better than a Steam + Sauna, after having been in the heated pool overlooking the last skiers coming down the mountain.

A big thank you to all staff members

The Hotel Berner is an excellent hotel, my wife and I came for a week in the summer several years ago and we had such a lovely time that we vowed we would come back; this time we came skiing for a week and everything is still fantastic. The hotel is superbly managed by brothers Cristoph and Gottfried, they and all the staff are extremely friendly, attentive and professional, the food at breakfast and dinner is superb and the hotel has a lovely atmosphere,it has a nice lounge area, a very good pool and wellness centre and decent sized bedrooms, we overlooked the lake and the views were lovely.
The location is good, you can ski in from the slopes and it's also close to the lifts and the centre of the town. We would reccomend it wholeheartedly.

I cannot think of any negative comments about the Berner Hotel. We have just returned and loved the whole experience, from being greeted with a welcome drink to our luggage being whisked up to our room. The staff were, without exception, friendly and kind and extremely hard working, especially Nadya and Sarah who ran the dining room, the bar and the afternoon cakes with efficiency and always a smile and a greeting for all guests. Our room was large with a partial lake view and a lovely balcony. The hotel is in a great location and so quiet and peaceful, especially at night. We were wakened one morning by the sound of cow bells and looked out of our window to see a herd of cows in the field in front! We appreciated the robes and slippers provided and the comfort of the room. The shower had good pressure, the wardrobe was large with lots of coathangers, nice toiletries were provided, as was a good hairdryer. The star of the show however, was dinner. You chose from a menu each morning at breakfast and we would say that the standard of the food was quite exceptional. We absolutely loved dinner and think that the hotel has a very good chef. The Berner family were usually on hand and made a point of speaking with the guests whenever possible. It’s a very well run and exceptionally clean hotel. We didn’t use the spa facilities but had a look around and it was lovely. The swimming pool had plenty of loungers, towels were provided and again the whole area was kept very tidy. I have no hesitation in recommending this hotel and hope to return next year. Try it, I’m sure you will love it too.

My family and I stayed in Hotel Berner for Christmas 2021. We found the hotel very charming, spacious, lovely reception area, great bedrooms with stunning views of Zell am See and lake.

It is very close to bus station (Postplatz Zell am See) and the 71 came regularly taking us to the main ski school area at the bottom of the schmittenhöhebahn and trassExpress gondolas. The village centre is also nearby. The CityExpress gondola is very close to the hotel, note that is a red piste and too advanced for our kids, but you can ski into the hotel, they have great storage.

Hotel Berner is a family hotel, and they were extremely helpful and genuinely made us feel at home. Christmas Eve around the Christmas tree was a very traditional and authentic occasion, with gifts and music. They made a big effort to share festivities with all residents.

The breakfast was perfect buffet for everyone's tastes. Evening meal was always perfect with a nice balance of local traditional and International cuisine. I thoroughly enjoyed all meals, service was very efficient and staff vey pleasant.

The spa and pool was excellent also, the outdoor pool set among snow was a perfect end to a days skiing. My children would not leave it. Lying back in warm water staying at snow and stars is an incredible escape. The sauna and steam rooms were modern, clean and an unexpected bonus. Many hotels get this wrong, Hotel Berner has a very good spa available to its guests !!

Will definitely return.

Excellent hotel, highly recommended.

Upon arrival we were welcomed by several members of the family and team and offered complementary drinks in their beautiful reception area. There are many excellent aspects to the hotel but certainly the team were the highlight. They are the most friendly and welcoming hotel team I have met so far during my travels. They were extremely attentive to all of our needs and always friendly when entering and leaving the hotel asking us about our day and always on hand for help or advice.

In addition to this the rooms were lovely and spacious, we stayed in a junior suite I think, which had a lovely big double bed and sofa bed for the children (8 and 15), along with a nice balcony that looked over the beautiful lake Zell and surrounding mountains.

The spa and pool area was lovely and clean with plenty of space and sunbeds to relax on. The pool was generally quiet with a Jacuzzi seating area and massage bubble outlets which were lovely after a long day exploring.

The food was also excellent. In the mornings there was a large selection of breads, cakes, cereals, fruits and cheeses and meats which covered all of our needs and then you got the menu for the evening meal with a soup, a choice of 2 starts (one meat/fish and one vegetarian) along with 3 mains (one meat, one fish and one vegetarian) and two deserts, plus a separate children's menu of one soup, main and desert for our 8 year old. The options were varied but all really enjoyable. Our 15 year old, who can be a little picky, enjoyed all of the meals throughout the week and really enjoyed several of the options that she would not normally have picked. There is also the salad a bar, which my 8 year old loved going to every night to pick a many different things.

I really recommend a visit to the Berner and Zell am See Kaprun region, you will not be disappointed.

From the very start with a welcome drink and our cases taken to the room to the very end with a chocolate with our bill and a packed breakfast as we had an early flight the attention to detail and kindness made our holiday at The Berner a lovely experience for our family.

The staff are, without exception, hard working, thoughtful, professional and kind. They remember what you drink at breakfast without you having to ask, they bring mayo and tomato ketchup because you had it yesterday. There is water on the dinner table because you asked for it previously. They offer an alternative meal if your children don't like it. The cleaning team make your room like new every day and pull the curtains if it's hot to keep your room cool. Any issues are dealt with efficiently by the reception desk.

This traditional hotel is spotlessly clean, well maintained and very comfortable with a lovely pool area and garden. The spa area is relaxing including a nude area which is customary for this country and was great after a long walk. We really appreciated the extra space in a junior suite and the lovely view from our balcony. Tea and coffee in the room is provided which isn't always the case in Austria in our experience. Robes and slippers are lovely to have too. The beds are very comfortable.

The food was excellent throughout our stay. Breakfast was varied and refreshed regularly, cake at 3pm was a lovely treat after a day out and the evening meals were a highlight of our stay with lots of choice, a complimentary soft drink which was much appreciated and a lovely atmosphere in the restaurant.

Zell am See was fantastic with lots to do for free using the summer card and the location of the hotel was peaceful with lovely views and just a 5 minute walk to the town.

Thank you for a lovely holiday - we would definitely return to this hotel.

Hi Chris, swimming clothes have to be worn in the outdoor pool.
Answer from christoph_zell
Zell am See, Austria1 contribution
Dear Chris, usually it's not difficult. Of course it is a bit downhill but streets are normally cleared and salted. The driveway to the hotel is heated, so there is usually no ice. But of course, one always has to be careful. If it snows heavily it can happen that streets are covered with snow and ice for a day or two. Or if it’s sunny during the day snow is melting and then freezing again at night and then you have icy areas on the street and pavement. Hope this helps. If you have any more questions, please don’t hesitate to come back to me. Kind regards, Christoph Berner
