I have seen photos of the lovely views you are supposed to get from the Chateau Tongariro, but we did not see them at all--it rained the whole time and the mountains were completely hidden by the clouds. The hotel is right in the park and there are great tramps available within walking distance. The high tea we had was...

If you book this hotel, watch out and make sure you have one of the better rooms. Do not accept your room unless you have checked it. We were very unfortunate : we got a small room at the end of a hall with no view at all, an awful bed with a very bad mattress, the central heating did...

Lovely grounds, lovely rooms and great all round atmosphere. Excellent customer service. Pre dinner drinks in the bar and a game of snooker are fun. Breakfast is great. Toiletries and facilities in the room were a bit limited. No shampoo or shower gel. Limited towels. Meal in the restaurant tasty although we were only allowed to order certain items off...

My wife and I just spent a fantastic overnight, for our 10th wedding anniversary. Staff was very accommodating and we had a fantastic dinner, followed by a couple of after dinner drinks by the open fire. The following morning we had a superb breakfast in the main dining room. Great spot.

We came for high tea after spending time in the Tongariro National Park. The setting is gorgeous and the high tea was delicious. The only downside was the slowness of the staff in turning over tables, taking orders, and processing payments. Despite this, we still recommend coming and checking out the hotel and trying the high tea!

High tea at the Chateau is delicious. We ordered one high tea to share, plus one coffee. Every item was delicious and a treat. Was lovely to sit and watch the world go by, the staff are very attentive but not over bearing.

It is a big old 1930's hotel. Not a five star place, but the staff are friendly and efficient. The beds are comfortable, bathrooms are clean. Restaurant is ok, again, not five star but it is okay. If you are going to be in the park it is a handy place to stay

This was a "must-do" on our two-week NZ odyssey. We have a penchant for these grand, old places in strange and remote locations and the Chateau Tongariro didn't disappoint. The room was nice and spacious, bed was a true king-size and comfy, clean and well-appointed furnishings. Downside was we paid extra for a room with a view, but didn't realise...
