If you're at this destination for it's remarkable and varied National Park wonders then you can't go past the Chateau for your accommodation. If offers a broad spectrum of rooms ranging from budget (small with wing views) to family (moderately roomy with beds for everyone & sometimes good views) and superior which of course are well appointed and have, one...

The hotel is well preserved and was built, I believe, in the 1920's. If you like historical hotels, you'll like this one. Staff was friendly and efficient. Walking trails are nearby, as well as the ski lifts, which runs in the summer with wonderful views from above.

We travelled as a large group and were very well looked after. The rooms were good, single beds a little narrow but very comfy. The food was not great at the main restaurant, certainly not worth the price. Swordfish was very dry and small portions, especially after completing the crossing. Check your bill too, although ours was fine, some people...

There are only two hotels to choose from in the Whakapapa Village of Tongariro National Park. The Chateau Tongariro was built in 1929 in the style of grant hotels and provides a diverse array of room choices and dining options. Our Room (#902) was spacious and offered nice views of the mountains. The décor of the hotel is dated and...

Great venue and top marks for the renovation. Last time there it was a train wreck. There has always been a special place in my heart for embibing in the Tongariro room with the ever changing Vista. Whether with a beer back in the 70's dressed in climbing or tramping gear (minus boots) or a family no ski day when...

Stopped in for a coffee and dessert in the afternoon. The "Chocolate on Chocolate" dessert of the Day was advertised as Tiramisu, which should have been our first clue as Tiramisu doesn't have any chocolate in it. What I was served was a store bought chocolate Swiss roll served with a bit of mediocre vanilla ice cream.

If you're going to Tongariro this is the place to stay. Yes, it's faded, a little run down and tired and the staff sometimes seem to need more training, . . .but what an awesome location! The hotel has a charm that you just can't match in a modern chain. It reminded us of the great hotels in New England...

Rather than repeat the many varying comments made by others I will just give our experiences. Given the location the room pricing was excellent for our 2 night stay - this is not a 5 star hotel where you pay $500/night plus - at half that price including a good breakfast it was excellent value. The building looked magnificent with...

I have traveled to dozens of countries and visited hundreds of hotels around the world. But this hotel I love the most! The hotel is situated in a secluded location away from the hustle and bustle of the city among volcanoes. It has a solemn and friendly atmosphere. Everything is beautiful, tasty, comfortable, soundly and efficiently. Here you want to...

The location and setting is beautiful. Is the inside a bit faded? - sure but its still grand and the view is amazing. We took our kids and the large family room was a great size - big enough for us all to sleep in one room but not be on top of each other. The downstairs 'bar/lounge' let us...
