We only went for afternoon hi-tea so we cannot provide any comments about the rooms etc. Situated at the base of a mountain, the drive from where we were staying in Lake Taupo was long as the roads are mainly single lane and winding. The day was raining and cold but luckily the wood fires were going in the chateau...

We really enjoyed our two day stay at the Chateau. Reception staff were welcoming and efficient as were all the staff we had contact with. Our room was a corner room with wonderful views of Mt Ngauruhoe. The room was a good size, well appointed and nicely furnished. The bathroom was a little dated but everything worked. We had afternoon...

What a treat to stay at this lovely hotel. Beautiful setting at the base of the mountains. Rooms have been modernised but still retain their charm. We ate at the hotel restaurant and had a wonderful chateaubriand meal. Breakfast was suitably sumptuous. We can recommend the visitor centre nearby for a wonderful display of historic and geological information with live...

We went mid week, low season (no snow) so very reasonable, especially if book direct. Include breakfast - wonderful. Such attentive staff, lovely lounge, good thermal pool. The room was rather hot and we turned heater off, but still too hot. Perhaps needs adjustment for warm May.

The hotel is badly dated inside with some poorly considered additions. The bedroom was fine apart from a couple of stains on the carpet, but the 1980's era bathroom needs refurbishment - chipped paint, lifting vinyl, etc. The hallways are worn, dark 1960's style affairs out of keeping with the building. The public and reception rooms look grand but are...

We enjoyed a wonderful stay mid week in the Tongariro National Park. The Chateau Tongariro Hotel is charmingly old, with upgraded rooms. The views of Ruapehu and Ngauruhoe(Mt. Doom) were outstanding. I had the award winning lamb for dinner; it was the best lamb EVER. My husband had the pork and it was delicious as well. They have a mid...

What a gorgeous place. Had a lovely couple of nights here, service was great, the room was everything we wanted and the food was very good but a tad expensive. Would go again for a special occasion. We went at the end of season for the crossing and some of the local cafe we're closed . Still had a great...

The staff at the front desk were fantastic - Jet lag was setting in and we had further to travel the next day. The areas is full of natural beauty - the location is excellent and must be fantastic in winter. The room was fine and coming back down for dinner there was someone playing piano in the background which...

Great service and location. Lots of amenities. Wonderful staff. It was the many small oversights that was problematic. We couldn't play the golf course because they didn't have golf balls - for an entire week - despite indicating otherwise on the website. Good meals but almost no salads or veggies (and reduced menu during low season). Pianist was unavailable, and...

This is my favourite building in NZ! I just love the Grand stature of the Chateau and it's old world charm. We have frequented the Chateau Tongariro many times during the Ski Season; where we enjoy après ski by the fire; often still in our ski gear, recalling a fabulous day up snowboarding at Mt Ruapehu; when meeting with friends....
