Detailed Reviews
I was surprised at how clean the room was and its overall condition. The pictures on the various websites do not do it justice. The people who run it were very friendly and helpful even gave me help unloading the luggage (a first in 3 weeks in New Zealand). The location was quiet area not as busy as the rest of the village but still a short walk to restaurants and across the street from the hot pool (note: it is not a natural hot springs judt a heated pool). Our room (an apt.) was spacious and had a separate room with twin beds as well as a queen bed in the main room. The mattress of the later was much better than the twin mattresses which had no support on the edges. The bathroom was compact but the soaps and shampoos were better than average and thee were two heat lamps which did a good job of warming the place up. The shower was strong and there was a good supply of hot water. The kitchen was well equipped although it took us a little whil to figure out how to run the microwave properly. r

Clean and comfortable lodging operated by friendly hosts. The room's 24” TV screen was a little small for watching videos on a rainy day and the mattress was too soft for me, but it's in a quiet location that offers a short walk to downtown restaurants and attractions. The friendly host gave good touring information, but the wifi was spotty even after her assistance. The motel has a washer and dryer. Enjoy the beautiful snow capped mountain views (on a clear day) from outside.

We stayed here while touring South Island during very heavy rains and flooding. We were delighted with this accommodation. We had a friendly welcome and were given milk for morning brew.
The motel style rooms are in blocks of two. They are modern and of a high standard. Each room has a kitchenette with microwave twin induction hobs, fridge and kettle.
5 min walk to village centre restaurants store/supermarket.
Opposite thermal spa with 10% discount.
11min (6K) drive to Franz Joseph glacier car park.
Highly recommended!

We stayed here one night. The room was a decent size. They did not have air conditioning but had an oscillating fan. Storage was sufficient but the room had no safe. It had a small equipped kitchen area with a 2 burner oven top, tea kettle, microwave, toaster and refrigerator, along with some pots, pans, utensils, plates, cups and cutlery. Shower pressure was good, but shower was very small. The mattress and pillows were too soft and definitely needs replacing. The area around the motel is great. There are shops and restaurants, all within walking distance. Parking is free. However, if you plan to stay in the area after check out time, you must move your car. We were up early since we booked a helicopter tour, so we were able to secure a parking spot on the street in front of the hotel. When we were walking the prior night, we noticed a parking lot down the road. It was empty since it was later in the evening and the crowds subsided.

On Nov 17, we stayed at the motel on our west coast bus trip. The motel is on a quiet street that is parallel to the main highway. It's just a few minutes to walk to the village business area, which there are shops, restaurants, bars, etc.
Our 1-bedroom apartment was comfortable with a kitchenette, separate bedroom, living/dining area, etc. The unit was very clean and quiet. The native rainforest bush gardens surrounding the complex making it very calm.
The two hotel co-managers were very helpful and kind with all the questions we asked.

This is a small motel in a small city. With seven of us we took up 4 rooms which seemed like half the motel but in truth there were quite a few rooms tucked away in the middle of this motor court.
The truly unique thing about this property was the manager and her assistant. They were beyond helpful providing insight, recommendations and, most importantly. umbrellas. Although this is a small property by living on site they seemed omnipresent which was a good thing.
As advertised the rooms were large with small kitchenettes. The bathrooms were adequate, the bed cozy. The sliding glass door entry seemed a bit odd at first but it was functional. A chair outside the room allowed you to enjoy your neighbors if you chose.
We were only there for two nights. I wish it had been more. After staying at big city hotels in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, this was a nice, relaxing change of pace with a welcoming staff to boot.

58 On Cron is in a quiet part of town (although nowhere in Franz Josef is that remote) just a stroll from restaurants, shops and the West Coast Wildlife Centre where you can see kiwi (if you have sharp eyes). It has all you need for a short stay and pleasant staff who can advise how you can see the glaciers for free - no need to take a helicopter flight or a tour. King Tiger the Asian restaurant next door is tasty and the hot pools opposite are a great way to end the day's sightseeing. Small observation, the motel's overwhelming brown decor is a bit dreary, I'd be tempted to brighten it up a bit.

Lovely site, basic but perfectly adequate for our stay. The couple who look after it were really friendly and helpful. We borrowed a rice cooker to use, Only downside was kitchen didn't have much to cook with, so we had to improvise. Even cooking scrambled eggs we had no jug to make it in. Beds comfortable, one bedroom only had one bedside table so that meant I had to put stuff on window sill behind me , and it got wet. Shower was extremely good very powerful and loved the heater above you.
One warning don't cook onions or spicy food , they requested that not to cook otherwise would charge you cleaning fee because of the smell!!

Response from Sheryl Hilton, Owner at 58 On Cron Motel
Responded 4 Nov 2024
Good Morning Thank you for your review. We are sorry that you could not find much to cook with but the rooms have kitchenettes in them and not full kitchens. If you could not find the glass jug to make your scrambled eggs then all you needed to do was let us know and we would have given you one as there should be 1 in every room. The note about cooking spicy food and onions in the rooms is there as these smells can be very hard to get out of a room and ready for the next guest. I am sure that the next guest wouldn't appreciate coming into a smelly room. Kind Regards Sheryl

While on a three week holiday in the South Island, I’d booked a one bedroom unit online a few days before we were due in Franz Josef. Booking was easy with instant confirmation.
We were in unit 16, a lovely warm one bedroom unit. The motel is set in beautiful grounds with lots of beautiful punga trees and native bush. All units are ground floor, with parking directly outside. The very comfortable king sized bed was in the roomy lounge area, and a separate bedroom had two single beds.
We stayed for two nights, and had a lovely stay. A very nice young man greeted us on arrival and offered to help with our bags, which was really nice. He had put the lights on for us, and turned on the heating. Nice little touches.
Very impressed that they have a MySky setup and also insect screens on the windows to help avoid those pesky West Coast sandflies!!
The unit was spotlessly clean, roomy and well appointed. Would definitely stay there again, and highly recommend.
As an aside, I’d like to say how difficult the Covid lockdown years must have been for places like Franz Josef, where the whole place relies so heavily on tourist dollars. If my few $$ can help the area recover I’ll be very happy.

It seems Franz Josef is just revising after COVID with a lot of accommodation, eateries and shops still closed. We were happy enough with 58 On Cron whose new temporary managers seemed enthusiastic in their role and helpful. The room itself was motel style and the design of the motel does not make much celebration of the area of natural beauty, but we had no complaints. There is an option for a rather basic breakfast box, or cooking in (literally in) the room, with just one cafe open for breakfast currently in the small town. No doubt things will improve slowly with summer.
