Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

My partner and I stopped here for one night as we had booked an eco-tour hike. This seemed like the best option in the area and we were VERY happy with our selection. The couple who greeted us (substitutes for friends who own the place) were SO sweet! They were slightly elderly and I'd love to adopt them! Check-in and check-out were simple. Plentiful parking. The room was spacious, immaculately clean and quiet. We had a great night of sleep! There are plenty of restaurant choices nearby (the couple was kind enough to give us a map of the area and recommend a few), as well as a gas station (important!). It's setting is beautiful; lots of mountains around. We HIGHLY recommend this place.

From the moment we arrived at reception and were welcomed by a lovely Australian couple we knew we would enjoy our stay. They very kindly had the heating on in the room which was a very welcomed. The room is very spacious and extremely clean. Great amount of sky tv channels (especially with the thunderstorms we encountered). The accommodation is a very quick walk to all the bars and restaurants. On our trip we have stayed in a few 5* hotels and I enjoyed this stay as much if not more than some of those 5* hotels. I would highly recommend this accommodation to anyone looking to stay a few nights in Franz Josef (I wished we had stayed longer than 2 nights).

We loved it here. We stayed for 2 nights. Great location. Great sized room, has everything you night need. The shower pressure is excellent, and the room was spotless. The Australian couple that checked us in were very friendly and warm. Would stay again!

My wife and I took a self drive touring holiday on South Island New Zealand from the 17th March to the 11th April 2023. Apart from the first 2 nights and the last night where we stayed in a hotel in Christchurch we were self catering and stayed in accommodation that offered cooking facilities. I have reviewed each of the hotel/motels we stayed in. The following reviews cover the accommodation and some of the facilities/visits we made on the trip. If you would like to view the rest of the reviews please click on my username and all my reviews will be listed. Days 14 and 15 of our self drive tour of South Island March/April 2023 58 On Cron Motel, Franz Josef Glacier 3 star We stayed for the 2 nights 28th and 29th March at the 58 On Cron Motel at The Franz Josef Glacier. Welcome. We were welcomed at Reception and given a map of the area. Service. The hairdryer is fixed to the wall in the bathroom and did not work very well. We asked at Reception if we could have a plug in hairdryer. The receptionist went to a sister motel down the road and obtained one. Location. The motel ,is located near to the centre of Franz Josef and within walking distance of restaurants and bars. We were able to park right outside our unit. Comfort. We were disappointed in this motel. The room was not that large. There was a double bed and a single bed. (See photo). These were both very soft and saggy as if they had been in use for a long period. The lighting was very poor. There were 2 table lamps with low wattage bulbs, one ceiling spotlight and one light over the kitchenette area. Given the lack of light and the dark colours of the furnishings, it was very gloomy It seemed that it had not been updated in years. The kitchenette area was very small with virtually no storage. There was no extract fan in the kitchenette area, so food odours lingered after cooking. There was a small table and a couple of chairs. It was quite cramped when preparing and consuming food. There was little room to store any food or drink. There was one small saucepan and one frying pan. There was an open cupboard for clothes. The TV was quite small. Cleanliness. The room, bedding and bathroom were clean, but because of the poor lighting and colour of the bedspreads the room felt gloomy. WiFi. The Wifi seemed to work OK. Although I did not try streaming any programmes. Conclusion. This motel was a disappointment. It would probably be suitable for a one night stay if you went out for a meal, but did not cook in the unit.

Great location with easy off-road parking suitable for larger vehicles. Smaller studio room, ours had two queen beds, with a kitchenette and ensuite. Separate coin operated laundry area for guest use between 4-9pm. Small outdoor seating area (2 chairs and a small table) outside the main door in the carpark area. Well equipt kitchenette and acess to shared bbq area. Check in was easy. Host was friendly and pointed out local attractions/ restaurants. Unit was clean with the remotes and toilets sanitized. Free wifi (not high speed). Downside: outside area isn't private, fine for a drink or coffee (just not in your underwear). Shower pressure is low and the shower head/rose needed descaling so water went everywhere but on you. It is also positioned rather low so anyone tall will need to do some gymnastics to get under the water. Our unit didn't have air conditioning, with the main door opening onto the carpark and only small windows on the backside, getting a breeze though the unit on the 30 deg C day was a challenge. A fan had been provided which we used overnight. Our unit also had a slightly odd smell (salted dry fish or possibly the result of combined cleaning products?). The smell wasn't a major issue and the fan moved it on.

Good location. Although restaurants were full so book ahead. Not really spacious enough for 5. Tiny kitchenette ( which we needed as restaurants were full). Also no air con. Unbearably hot inside when we arrived so asked for an additional fan. Overall adequate for one night.

It seems Franz Josef is just revising after COVID with a lot of accommodation, eateries and shops still closed. We were happy enough with 58 On Cron whose new temporary managers seemed enthusiastic in their role and helpful. The room itself was motel style and the design of the motel does not make much celebration of the area of natural beauty, but we had no complaints. There is an option for a rather basic breakfast box, or cooking in (literally in) the room, with just one cafe open for breakfast currently in the small town. No doubt things will improve slowly with summer.

We were so surprised by this accomadation! We thought this would be a quick stop through franz josef and then carry on our travels buy We were wrong! After check in and seeing our unit we quickly asked if we could stay 2 nights! Jo at the front desk was super friendly and clearly understood hospitality she gave us great recommendations and some vouchers for our next town. The unit was really warm, clean and comfortable with everything we needed and walking distance into town. We would definitely stay here again!
